2 Background n NSF CC-NIE and similar projects represent significant investments in campus infrastructure (~130 projects), many focussing on SDN and the creation of campus DMZ s n But the scientists are still struggling with the complexity of using the network and interoperability between different implementations of DMZ s n The Pacific Research platform focuses on enabling the science communities to make effective use of the high performance infrastructure that is available.

3 Pacific Research Platform v0 n PRPv0: a proof of concept experiment to develop and inform requirements for future work. The idea was hatched in December 2014 take advantage of the available infrastructure, deploy PERFSONAR grid and DTN s to demonstrate a proof of concept for the PRP n Integrate West Coast Campus DMZ s (developed by ESNET) across a regional infrastructure (a combination of CalREN-HPR and Pacific Wave) A backplane for dataintensive science n High performance data movement provides capabilities that are otherwise unavailable to scientists n This capability is extensible, regionally, nationally and internationally n Demonstrated at the CENIC Spring meeting (March 2015)

7 PRPv0 PRPv0 concentrated on the regional aspects of the problem. There are lots of parts to the research data movement challenge. This experiment mostly looked at the inter-campus piece. Over a 10-week period, lots of network and HPC staff at lots of sites collaborated to Build a mesh of perfsonar instances to instrument the network Implement MaDDash -- Measurement and Debugging Dashboard Deploy Data Transfer Nodes (DTNs) Perform GridFTP file transfers to quantify throughput Activate an ad-hoc, partial BGP peering mesh across a fabric of 100G links to demonstrate the potential of networks with burst capacity greater than that of a single DTN Identify some specific optimizations needed Fix a few problems in pursuit of gathering illustrative data Identify anomalies for further investigation 7

8 Performance for nodes that are close is better than for nodes that are far away Network problems that manifest over a distance may not manifest locally 8

13 Pacific Research Platform - Proposaql Abstract Science Drivers The Pacific Research Platform is a project to forward the work of researchers and their access to technical infrastructure, with a vision of connecting all the National Science Foundation Campus Cyberinfrastructure grants (NSF CC-NIE & CC-IIE) to research universities within the region, as well as the Department of Energy (DOE) national labs and the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). 19 Next Steps n Migrate from experiment to persistent infrastructure n Expand DTN and perfsonar deployment to include all 10 UC campuses, Caltech, Stanford, USC, and University of Washington n Incorporate federated access to resources n Engage with scientists to begin to map their research collaborations across the Pacific Research Platform n Work with campus IT organizations to make last mile connections between researchers and the Science DMZ 19

20 Pacific Research Platform Strategic Arc Longer-term Goals PRP Evolution An Integrated West Coast Science DMZ for Data-Intensive Research Science DMZ interoperability / integration across regions, nationally, and internationally Managing Domain Specific Science Communities - we anticipate that as it matures, SDN is a natural technology to manage the multiple science domain structures (including security) envisioned by PRP and that we envision that in the next few years the PW fabric will be run using SDN for that purpose IPv6 Expand to Commercial services Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google? 20
