Proactive Network Maintenance (PNM) 4º Workshop America Movil - Painel B3 Tim Fike Business Development Manager Cisco Systems, Inc. fiket@cisco.com May 9, 2017
What if you could pro-actively identify and locate the source of linear distortions in the HFC Network using your existing CMTS s and CM s? Combined with a tool that correlates all field data and represents this in a very comprehensive format to the MSO staff
The problem Linear distortions micro-reflections, amplitude ripple/tilt, and group delay cause havoc upon the digital signals carried on cable networks, causing inter-symbol interference (ISI), degraded modulation error ratio (MER), and if severe enough, packet loss. Troubleshooting linear distortions usually requires specialized test equipment What if you could identify and locate the source of linear distortions in the field using your existing cable modem termination system (CMTS) and cable modems?
Which of the following do you have deployed more widely in your Network? (A) Portable test equipment (B) Handheld test equipment (C) DOCSIS-based CPE
How to make use of your DOCSIS network? Given the large number of DOCSIS devices that have been deployed by cable operators, why not take advantage of them for network troubleshooting? By utilizing DOCSIS cable modems and set-tops as continuous probes throughout the network to identify and locate plant and subscriber drop problems, proactive network maintenance (PNM) will: Detect and locate faults in HFC plant before rolling trucks Perform trend analysis to predict future faults before they happen So, what is PNM?
What is PNM? It is a Proactive approach to maintaining cable plant impairments Using existing DOCSIS hardware: CM, CMTS, STBs Identifies upstream and downstream impairments Enables localization and type of impairments Analytics platform enabling smarter operational decisions PNM is constantly evolving to meet the needs of future network upgrades DOCSIS 3.1, 1.2GHz HFC, RPHy & fiber deep solutions
How does it work? PNM collects and correlates DOCSIS spectrum MIB and analytic measurements in near-real time Spectrum information, using Customer specific data together with CMTS and Cable Modem RF spectrum data collected off of the Customer s Network at a specified frequency Correlated data and device mapping are accessible to business users through an intuitive user portal
PNM History SCTE s 2008 Cable-Tec Expo, CableLabs members presented Pre-equalization Based Pro-Active Network Maintenance Methodology paper. Basic idea: Using cable modem upstream transmitter adaptive pre-equalizer coefficients to detect and localize plant impairments In 2009 CableLabs formed a Proactive Network Maintenance (PNM) working group, resulting in a best practices document in 2010, followed by a reference implementation it became as Standard along with DOCSIS 3.1
Real World Usage Examples
How PNM improves operation workflow NOC Field Technicians In Home Repair HFC Repair Call Center Subscribers
How PNM improves operation workflow Reduction on Time-to-Repair NOC PNM Field Technicians In Home Repair HFC Repair Call Center Reduction on truck rolls Subscribers Reduction on Call Center calls
PNM Process based on Pre-Equalization
PNM Dashboards, Graphics & Mobile Devices
Real Example of PNM Situation: field visit fixing severe problem affecting four (4) buildings customers and 872 MACs ICFR Before Cracked.500 cable FM Ingress After the fix :
DOCSIS 3.1 & PNM
DOCSIS 3.1 & PNM PNM designed for DOCSIS 3.1 from the ground up to provide test points in the CMTS and cable modem Characterize and troubleshoot HFC plant Support remote proactive troubleshooting of plant faults Improve reliability and maximize throughput from well-maintained plant PNM became as Standard along with DOCSIS 3.1
Downstream PNM hooks Downstream symbol capture: Capture OFDM symbol at input and output of plant, solve for in channel frequency response Wideband spectrum analysis: Spectrum analyzer in cable modem Channel estimate coefficients: Downstream equalizer response Constellation display: QAM constellation cluster Receive modulation error ratio (RxMER) per subcarrier: MER (SNR) vs frequency FEC statistics: Correctable and uncorrectable codewords Histogram: Signal distribution revealing nonlinearities in plant such as laser clipping Received power: RF power received at cable modem
Spectrum of upstream band at cable modem Extension to D3.1 PNM Problem: Upstream noise funnels to single point at CMTS making it difficult to locate source Solution: Measure spectrum of upstream band at each cable modem Provides noise source location capability Noise originating in house, drop or plant will have identifiable spectrum signature at cable modems and CMTS
Upstream PNM hooks Capture for active and quiet probe: Capture known probe symbol (or empty slot) at output of plant, solve for plant response (or noise floor) Triggered spectrum analysis: Spectrum analyzer synchronized with upstream timeslots Impulse noise statistics: Burst/impulse noise level and duration Equalizer coefficients: Pre- and post-equalizer responses FEC statistics: Error-free, unreliable, and corrected codewords Histogram: Signal distribution revealing nonlinearities in plant such as laser clipping Channel power: Power received at CMTS (ranging offset) RxMER per subcarrier: MER (SNR) vs frequency
Benefits of PNM
PNM Benefits No additional probes / compute / storage required No additional development required fully cloud based, hosted solution OPEX reduction through Average reduction in support time per customer Average reduction in time per incident Reduction in FTE(Support + Field service ) Reduction in incidents Reduction in truck rolls Improved quality of experience will reduce Subscriber churn
