Our Goal To help people to have the easiest VMware Cloud Foundation deployment experience possible! Highlight architectural decision points critical to a deployment Supply useful reference material Answer any questions Have fun! 3
What Is VMware Cloud Foundation? 4
VMware Validated Designs Prescriptive Blueprints with Comprehensive Deployment and Operational Practices Complete Datacenter-level Designs Standardized and Consistent Proven and Robust Applicable to a Broad Set of Use-Cases 5
Cloud Foundation Software Building Blocks Compute vsphere ESXi PSC / vcenter HA/DRS vmotion Storage vsan Hyper-converged object storage All flash and hybrid Dedup & compression Data protection & replication Network NSX Distributed Firewall / M- Seg Logical Switching / App virtual networks Distributed switching/routing Edge Service Gateways (DHCP, Load balancing, NAT, Firewall) Management vrealize Suite vrealize Operations vrealize Log Insight vrealize Network Insight vrealize Automation 6
Physical Hardware Overview Top-of-Rack Switches Management Switch (Optional) Virtual Infrastructure WLD #2 Available Capacity Virtual Infrastructure WLD #1 Expand Expand Management Workload Domain Rack fully populated with vsan ReadyNodes Minimum Of 4 ReadyNodes Spine Switches Expandable as needed, up to vsphere Configuration Maximums 7
VMware Cloud Foundation Deployment Types Build Your Own Integrated Systems Cloud Based 8
Pre-Deployment Considerations 9
Pre-Planning Proper Prior Planning Prevents Painfully Poor Performance We utilize a Site Readiness document to help facilitate the planning process Not all inclusive, but it s very effective at providing discussion points Key information needed: Logistical Use Case Configuration information 10
Hardware Bill Of Materials Any vsan Ready node Use the vsan Ready Node Configurator Minimum Capacity disk size requirement is 1Tb per disk Minimum Cache disk size requirement is 200Gb per disk What You Can (and Cannot) Change NIC of similar or higher configuration allowed and supported e.g. 10G with 25G or 40G. The NIC needs to be IOVP (ESXi) certified Configure BIOS and FW levels to VMware and manufacturer recommendations for vsan Disable all but 2 10Gb network ports (including any additional LOM ports) VMware vsan Ready Node TM 11
Server Configuration Install ESXi (6.5 U2b) Utilize the defined passwords Use vendor specific build or VIBs for NICs and disk controllers, as needed Note: Validate the specific version of ESXi to be used in the VMware Cloud Foundation Documentation Enable SSH and NTP to start/stop with host Configure DNS server IP on host Validate forward and reverse lookups Hardware status is healthy All disk partitions must be deleted Management IP address must be configured on the first NIC port Default Standard Switch is configured with one 10G NIC (2 nd NIC is unconfigured) and default portgroup (VM Network) is on the mgmt. VLAN 12
External Services The following need to have DNS entries defined: Server Hostnames vcenter Server LogInsight (1 VIP, 3 Nodes) NTP sources must be available via the management network Configure NTP on the switches NSX Manager Platform Services Controllers (2x) DHCP with an appropriate scope size (one IP per physical NIC per host) is configured for the 'VTEP' VLAN. 13
Network Configuration VLANs for management, vmotion, NSX, VTP, and vsan are created and tagged to all host ports. Each VLAN is 802.1q tagged. IP ranges, subnet mask, and a reliable L3 (default) gateway for each VLAN are provided. Jumbo Frames (MTU 9000) are recommended on all VLANs. At a minimum, MTU of 1600 is required on the NSX VTP VLAN end to end through your environment. 14
Licensing Ensure you have license keys for the following: ESXi vcenter NSX vsan LogInsight Cloud Foundation Optional License (Post Deployment) vrealize Operations vrealize Automation 15
Passwords 16
Customer Use Case Efficient communication is paramount! The use case that the customer has can dictate additional requirements, such as: Deployment Model Network requirements VLANs Network Segments Software licensing vrealize Operations vrealize Automation DNS records Proxy Requirements 17
Solution Deployment 18
The Cloud Builder VM The Cloud Builder VM is a single use VM that deploys the initial Management Workload Domain components There are multiple methods to deploy the Cloud Builder VM Laptop ESXi host The Cloud Builder VM is distributed as a OVA. Ensure you provide all OVA attributes Requires a compliant password Once deployed, the Cloud Builder UI will provide you the ability to download a Excel spreadsheet 19
Configuration Spreadsheet 20
Double Check All Inputs During the initial configuration of the solution, you will have to provide a variety of inputs Double check all inputs Entering incorrect information can require a complete reimage to correct Verify everything Networks in use Networks or network services blocked VLANs not configured 21
Always Retry Once! 22
Post Deployment 23
After Bringup 24
Expand Workload Domains as Needed 25
Network Pools 26
Certificate Management 27
Configure and Apply Updates 28
Post Deployment - NSX Networking VCF focuses on automated component configuration Additional configuration is needed to realize the full capabilities of NSX Microsegmentation Load Balancers Firewalls and Firewall rules VPN NAT d environments Architect the virtual network solution prior to deploying VCF Configuration may be dictated by use case 29
Post Deployment - Workload Migration Many customers prefer a greenfield deployment Provides ability to fix previous architecture choices Replacing a aging environment is also popular PSO assistance recommended due to complexity with migrations Dependencies, downtime, etc. Evaluate all requirements Keep same IP space? Versions migrating from? Migrate or rebuild? Cold or hot? Bandwidth? Hybrid Cloud Extenstion: Cross vcenter Migration Fling: 30
Obtaining Support for Your VMware Cloud Foundation Solution VCF support requests will start with our VMware Cloud Foundation team, which has global representation to provide follow-the-sun support as appropriate Deep expertise from product teams may be engaged, ensuring that all components of the VCF solution work in harmony vsphere SME Teams New Support Request VMware Cloud Foundation Support Team VSAN Product Team NSX Product Team SDDC Manager Experts Solution-Aware Generalists Single point of support ownership Your new SR will be routed to a team member who will contact you within the initial target response time, utilizing your preferred method of contact 31
