Abstract: Connectivity is one of the recent trends in digital technology especially Internet of Things (IoT), within few years itself IoT had evolved in almost all the fields which includes engineering, science, Industry etc. The developments in IoT changed the classical connectivity architecture which already existed and now all the objects, digital and analog components each and everything is connected to IoT. So the need of a common platform is essential so that the objects or devices with different standards of connectivity can be brought under a common platform and eventually it can be connected to IoT so that the platform gives the flexibility of connecting different devices and it can be made as a standard for IoT connectivity. This paper proposes a system which acts as gateway to IoT for wired and wireless standards like CAN and Wi-Fi. The devices already having any of this connectivity can be connected with this common platform and the platform will be connected to IoT through Wi-Fi. It act as a gateway or interface for connection between the cloud and the end device with an improved IoT architecture using MQTT to achieve greater efficiency when connecting industrial networks with Internet based cloud platforms. Keywords: IoT, MQTT, Blynk App 1. Introduction Internet now become a vital part of life and the advancements in connectivity is showing a steep increase. Over the past twenty five years the digital world had changed a lot in that the connectivity and related field has evolved in such a way that it became one of the necessities of life. Internet influenced the world in such a way that one feel like each and every thing is very close and the immense of knowledge lead to rise of new technologies. Now everyone in this world is connected due to the advancements in internet technology. Likewise now the science world is trying to connect all technologies so that different technologies can share data s and through that connectivity of different technological platforms becomes reality. This research reached the path of Internet of Things where each and every devices is connected to internet and someone need to access any device or device data he can get it from anywhere using an internet connection. The developments in IPv6 also support the implementation of IoT [1, 2]. The problem which is facing is the platform dependency of the wired and wireless connectivity. But all the devices are having different type of connectivity so it became a tedious task to design independent platforms for each of them and whenever we are going for such a design it will be always a dependent system either it will depend on connectivity type or software platforms. So gateways which act as bridge between device and internet or cloud are very essential for the proper implementation. Simple gateways [7, 8] with one protocol support can t solve the problem completely. Through that all the devices having same connectivity can be connected but devices with different types of connectivity is not possible. Now a day s gateways are available with individual connectivity but gateways with multiple types of connectivity is very essential. For proper connectivity, gateways with platform independency are needed. So multi standard gateways are very essential for connecting different devices which are having different types of connectivity. 2. Related Work IoT is a mixed wireless and wired network, such as a complex network, the formation of congestion has a variety of reasons includes wireless and wired network for data exchanging and forwarding. Wired network has significantly higher bandwidth than wireless network and wired network send data packets to wireless network could easily lead to large accumulation of data and resulting in congestion; and when the wireless network 357
2 send data to wired network could easily lead to bandwidth waste in wired network. Analysis of congestion control strategy for IoT network [9, 10], the following several cases are considering: wireless network consisting; a mixed of wired and wireless network congestion. Congestion control of IoT network requires the congestion caused by the co-ordination of the above three reasons, the manifestation of network congestion is the excessive number of TCP connections in the network, the forwarding capacity is limited, the decline in network transmission capacity and reliability drop, then known as network congestion. When congestion is severed, the throughput may be a serious decline, it was said that network crashes. Gateways are crucial in monitoring systems in IoT networks. The development of embedded-based supports more programmable gateways with greater computing power. In a monitoring system, each sensor node collects the values of several reaction parameters, including strain, temperature, deflection, and then forwards data packets to the gateway. An architecture in which the gateway acts as a master node to control data transfer has been proposed for power saving [3]. It deployed on a user device as a slave node to be configured to enable the sensor poll or sniff continuously. The use of a gateway as a sink with TCP/IP stacks for data aggregation according to various communication models in an IoT network has been extensively discussed. A gateway with a routing and scheduling protocol can be used in support cooperative transmission strategy for data aggregation in IoT networks [4, 5]. The above approaches offer Internet access to the upper layer of IoT network, such as an application server, an Operations & Maintenance (O&M) server, or a database server. The approaches that are proposed in this work apply to wireless and wired networks. Therefore, this work advances our understanding of the interconnection of IoT devices with Internet access [6]. Figure 1. Proposed architecture of Industrial IoT Gateway The gateway will 1. Enable connectivity between different protocols wired (CAN) and wireless (Wi-Fi). Gather the data obtained from the different sensors, actuators and translates them into an internet compatible format. 2. Use a lightweight protocol for the devices with limited resources. 3. Provide local storage for later use and analysis. 4. Communicate with a cloud platform (local/remote) Two microcontrollers are used in this project, one for acquiring temperature sensor, object count data and the other for controlling the DC motor. Transmitting side CC3200 microcontroller continuously monitors the object count with the use of IR object sensor by converting analog values to digital with ADC attached to it and displays an object count in an OLED display as shown in figure 2. These values are violated when the microcontroller sends or transmits the data to the receiver side microcontroller by CAN controller and transceiver units. 3. Proposed Architecture of Industrial Iot Gateway One of the main challenges facing IoT is its heterogeneity in terms of communication protocols, technologies and hardware. The project focus on the implementation of a smart Industrial IoT gateway designed to allow interconnection and interpretability between heterogeneous devices in the industries as shown in figure 1. Hardware implementation of Wi-Fi node unit The industrial IoT gateway unit consists of two microcontrollers, CC3200 microcontroller is used to communicate with internet and it will transfer the data 358
3 received from transmitting side controller to STM32F103 microcontroller through UART. This proposed IoT gateway architecture act as a bridge to communicate between heterogeneous networks in industries as shown in figure 3. Figure 3. Hardware implementation of Gateway unit The receiving side CAN transceiver SN65HVD230 is used to implement CAN communication for exchanging the data. CAN communication receives the data and transfers it to the STM32F103 microcontroller that further processes the data and controls the DC motor by a motor-driver IC as shown in figure 4. It is also possible to change the direction of the motor with the driver IC controlled by the microcontroller. The smartphone app provides the end user with a GUI to monitor the data and control the device operation from a remote place. The cloud server acts as the middle man between the hardware device and the smartphone app managing all the data traffic between them in real-time. app. The cloud is capable of managing all forms of communication, between device to device, device to server and server to web application over internet. The Blynk server will be running a custom protocol for this communication and the Blynk library provided handles that. A Wi-Fi capable ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller is used to implement the system. This device offers a complete, low cost, powerful and user friendly way of real-time monitoring and remote control of actuators in industrial areas. 4. Result Figure 5 presents the gateway that had been developed between wired and wireless standard in an IoT using Atollic True Studio IDE and Energia software platform. The gateway accessed the Internet by Wi-Fi and polled the data from the sensors to cloud computing through Blynk server and connected to user equipment (UE). The gateway sends the data to a Blynk server, which is then uploaded for cloud computing. The Blynk App supported real-time monitoring and controlling polled data collecting on UE as shown in figure 6. The nodes record object data, which they then forward to the gateway to control the actuator on the other side. Figure 5. Hardware implementation of CAN node unit Blynk cloud server and Blynk smartphone app is preferred for its ease of use and simplicity. The connection to the internet is based on Wi-Fi. The project hardware has to be registered with the Blynk server. An authentication token is issued by the server while creating the project. This token will be used as a unique identifier that allows connecting the hardware to the smartphone 359
4 Figure 6. Real time monitoring and controlling using blynk app 5. Conclusion IoT is expected to be applied to various applications as a social infrastructure. However, to deploy IoT widely, lightweight communication protocols are required. An embedded-based gateway for use in a controlling and monitoring system was proposed in an IoT network with cloud platform. This paper designs a CAN fieldbus and Wi-Fi conversion gateway, and these two kinds of protocols are widely used in the field of industrial control system. The interface will provide a good solution to these two kinds of devices connection. If the conversion gateway is used in the industrial scene, CAN fieldbus and Wi-Fi conversion can be realized. An improved IoT architecture using MQTT is discussed to achieve greater efficiency when connecting industrial networks with Internet based cloud platforms. The gateway is a critical component for collecting, recording and forwarding data obtained from sensors. In the future, gateways with more functions, such as to prevent data loss, improve reliability and system performance optimization when utilized with large-scale data will be investigated.
