3 1 Product Overview Overview The H3C S9500E series routing switches (hereinafter referred to as the S9500E series) are new-generation core routing switches developed by Hangzhou H3C Technologies Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as H3C) based on its 100 G platform. The S9500E series are mainly deployed at the core layer of large-scale industry networks and campus networks. They can implement the following functions: Supporting ultra-high port density, and providing multiple interface types, such as 10 GE XFP optical interface, GE SFP optical interface, and 10/100/1000 Mbps electrical interface Supporting value-added security services, such as firewall, IPSec, distributed denial of service (DDoS) and load balancing (LB), to meet the requirements of intelligent IP networks. Supporting redundancy backup of power supply units (PSUs) and main processing units (MPU) to meet the requirements of multi-service, high-reliability and great-capacity for high-end users. The S9500E series include these models: S9505E The S9505E provides five line processing unit (LPU) slots and two MPUs, horizontal S9508E-V The S9508E-V provides eight LPU slots and two MPU slots, vertical S9512E The S9512E provides twelve LPU slots and two MPU slots, horizontal In this manual, hardware configurations of the S9505E, S9508E-V and S9512E are the same unless otherwise specified. General Architecture The S9500E series use an integrated chassis, which consists of a backplane section, PSU section, fan section, and board section. Chassis and Slots 1-1

4 Your devices might look different from the diagrams in the manual. When lifting the chassis, use the chassis handles. Neither the rear cover handles nor the fan tray handles are used to support the weight of the device. The PSU section contains PSUs that provide respectively AC input and DC input. Redundant backup is supported. Two vertical hot-swappable fan trays are installed on the chassis. The fans draw air in from the left and exhaust air from the right. Backplane The backplane of an S9500E switch is located in the integrated chassis. It implements high-speed data interconnections, system management and control signal exchange. The backplane mainly implements these functions: Providing communication channels for signal exchange between boards. Supporting hot-swapping of boards and PSUs. Auto-detecting types of boards in slots. Connecting with PSUs to provide distributed power supply for MPUs, LPUs, fan trays, and PSUs, and to provide monitoring channels. Power Supply System The S9500E series switches support both AC and DC power supply. You can select either AC or DC PSUs as needed. However, PSUs of different types cannot operate on the same S9500 series switch. You are recommended to configure redundancy backup of PSUs. 1-7

10 AC PSU An AC PSU consists of one AC PSU (NEPS3500-A) and one or two 1800 W AC sub-psus. You can install one or two AC sub-psus on the NEPS3500-A based on the actual power requirements. Fan Tray The fan trays of the S9500E series provide the following functions: Effective heat dissipation: Ensures normal operation of the device for a long time. Status monitoring: Fan rotation speed monitoring, fault alarms, and so on. 1-8

11 Automatic speed adjustment: Supports to adjust the fan rotation speed automatically according to the operation situation of the device, reducing noises and energy consumption effectively. Information indication: Two LEDs on the front panel of a fan tray provide the fan tray operating information. A fan tray on the S9505E and the S9512E consists of 4 fan units. Fan trays are hot-swappable with a maximum power of 40 W. A fan tray on the S9505E-V consists of 6 fan units. Fan trays are hot-swappable with a maximum power of 60 W. The S9505E and S9512E use the same type of fan trays, and intermixing of fan trays are supported; the S9508E-V uses different fan trays from those of the S9505E and S9512E, and does not support the intermixing of different fan trays. 12 MPU Specifications As the core of an S9500E switch, an MPU implements the following functions: Calculating routes and maintaining forwarding tables; providing data exchange between LPUs. Providing system configuration and monitoring functions to monitor other boards, and upgrade and reset board software. Supporting fast fault detection and restoration function (support of the MPC8544 CPU is needed; only supported by C-type MPUs). Active/standby switchover is supported if two MPUs are installed. The models of the active MPU and the standby MPU must be the same; otherwise, the standby MPU cannot boot normally. To use USB disks on an MPU, you are recommended to use the USB disks provided by H3C (optional when you purchase an MPU). MPC8544 is a Fast Fault Detection and Restoration (FFDR) CPU. 1-10

21 2 Features Overview The main features of the S9500E series are as follows: Advanced System Architecture Intelligent Resilient Framework 2 (IRF2) High-Performance QoS Diversified Service Features and Good Scalability High Availability All-Round Security Mechanism Superior Ease of Use Environment-Friendly Design Advanced System Architecture Industry-leading switching architecture to provide higher performance and better scalability, fully meeting the requirements of data centers and future development. Super-large switching capacity: For the switching capacity that a single device can provide, see Table 3-1. Ultra-high port density: One device supports 576 GE or 48 10GE ports to meet the high-density application requirements of data centers. Intelligent Resilient Framework 2 (IRF2) Providing an advanced virtualization technology that allows multiple switches to be interconnected to form one logical switching entity, thus reducing the maintenance cost. Supporting inter-frame resilient interconnection of common ports and inter-frame link aggregation. IRF2 supports the resilient interconnection of up to twelve 10-GE ports located in different frames, providing bandwidth of up to 120 Gbps. In addition to expanding the available ports and switching capacity, IRF2 also enhances the reliability of the devices, reducing the impact of single device failures on the network. High-Performance QoS Supporting a committed access rate (CAR) with the maximum granularity of 1 kbps. Support for Diff-Serv model in QoS. Providing standard application interfaces based on the Open Application Architecture (OAA) to integrate value-added security services, such as firewall, IPSec, DDoS, NetStream and LB. High Availability Fully-distributed switching architecture and software architecture: Basis for high performance, high scalability, and high availability. 1+1 redundancy for control plane enhance the system's fault isolation ability and reliability. Control plane has three CPU systems: MPU CPU system, Fast Fault Discovery and Restore (FFDR) CPU system, and Embedded Maintenance Subsystem (EMS). The FFDR CPU system is dedicated to quickly detecting BFD, OAM, and other faults and cooperates with the protocols at the control plane to support fast protection switchover and fast convergence. The EMS CPU system supports power management and provides an emergency channel. L2 reliability: Ethernet port bundling, DLDP, Smart Link, and RRPP. L3 reliability: NSF/GR for uninterrupted forwarding, ECMP, fast convergence of dynamic routes, and BFD. Service reliability: TE FRR/IP FRR. Network Quality Analyzer (NQA): Supports service-level online fault diagnosis, analyzes network or service quality by using different detection methods, such as TCP, UDP-Jitter, ICMP, HTTP, FTP, DHCP, DLSw, and SNMP, and generates detection results. Visual network traffic monitoring and analysis: Sampled Flow (sflow) is a network traffic monitoring technology based on packet sampling. sflow mainly analyzes network traffic and supports accurate network traffic monitoring over Gigabit or higher-speed networks. Supports 802.3ah OAM and provides multiple device-level and network-level fault detection methods. Environment-Friendly Design Developed power management functions allow powering off idle boards to reduce power consumption. Temperature monitoring and automatic fan speed adjustment effectively reduce noises and extends fan service periods. 2-3

26 Network Management Interface The 10/100/1000BASE-T autosensing RJ-45 network management interface allows you to perform software upgrade and device management through an NMS, without occupying any service port slot.
