1 Configuring a Hunt Group Between a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server Equipped with Two Compaq Gigabit Server NICs and an Avaya P882 MultiService Switch - Issue 1.0 Abstract These Application Notes provide instructions on how to configure a hunt group between a Windows NT 4.0 Server equipped with two Compaq Gigabit Server NICs and an Avaya P882 MultiService Switch. A sample configuration has been provided to help implement this capability. These Application Notes were written at the request of the corporate system engineering team. 1 of 14

Introduction These Application Notes provide instructions on how to configure a hunt group between a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server equipped with two Compaq Gigabit NICs and an Avaya P882 MultiService switch. For clarification, Compaq s use of the term Load Balancing (LB) maps to Avaya s Hunt/Link Aggregation Group model. Compaq s Network Teaming and Configuration Utility supports the following LB schemes: Adaptive Load Balancing (ALB) - The Compaq ALB feature creates a team of adapters to increase a server s overall transmission throughput. Each team provides a single virtual adapter. For example, an ALB team containing two Compaq Gigabit adapters configured for full duplex operation will have an aggregate transmit bandwidth of 2000 Mbps and a receive rate of 1000 Mbps. ALB works with any switch or hub as long as they belong to the same Layer 2 broadcast domain. You can only load balance teams that have the same speed NIC cards. Fast EtherChannel (FEC) The Compaq FEC feature creates a team of adapters to increase a server s overall transmission and reception throughput. Gigabit EtherChannel (GEC) is the equivalent technology to FEC. Unlike ALB, FEC/GEC can be configured to increase both transmission and reception channels between the server and the switch. For example, GEC teams containing two Compaq Gigabit adapters configured for full duplex operation provide an aggregate transmit bandwidth of 2000 Mbps and an aggregate receive bandwidth of 2000 Mbps. For FEC/GEC, you can team up the NC7131 and NC7132 Gigabit over copper adapters with adapters of different speeds. The hunt group links on an Avaya P882 switch are managed by a link aggregation algorithm which round-robins traffic, based on the destination MAC, across the links. Both the Avaya P882 MultiService switches and the Compaq Gigabit adapters provide link redundancy in addition to link aggregation. If any of the links fail, the traffic associated with that link is re-distributed across the other links by the link aggregation algorithm. Spanning Tree on the Avaya P882 switch treats the links in a hunt group as one link in order to prevent any of the links from being blocked. Figure 1 illustrates a sample NIC Adaptive Load Balancing configuration consisting of a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Server equipped with a Compaq NC7131 Gigabit Server NIC and a Compaq NC6136 gigabit Server NIC, an Avaya P882 MultiService switch, and two Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 workstations. 2 of 14

4 3. Compaq Adapters Adaptive Load Balancing Configuration The following NIC Adaptive Load Balancing configuration was configured using Compaq s Network Teaming and Configuration Utility. Step Description 1. Launch Compaq s Network Teaming and Configuration Utility : Double click on the NIC icon on the bottom right hand-side of the screen to launch Compaq s Network Teaming and Configuration Utility : 2. Configure NIC Adaptive Load Balancing: Click on the Team Button from the Teaming Setup Dialog box to configure Adaptive Load Balancing. The following screen pops up: 4 of 14

5 Step Description Select the Load Balancing Radio button and Adaptive Load Balancing for the load Balancing Control. Click the Apply and the OK buttons. The following Merge Complete message box pops up: Click the OK button. The following screen pops up verifying the Load Balancing Team has been created. 5 of 14

6 Step Description Click the Close button. 3. Configure the IP address for the Compaq Load Balancing Team: Upon clicking on the Close button the following Microsoft TCP/IP Properties screen pops up. Enter the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway: 6 of 14

7 Step Description Click the Apply and the OK buttons to close the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties screen. 4. Restart the Server: Upon closing the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties screen, the following dialog box pops up asking you if you would like to reboot the server. Select Yes to restart the local server. 7 of 14

8 4. Avaya P882 Switch Hunt Group Configuration Step Description 1. Create a VLAN for the gateway interface (Ex: VLAN3).! Select L2 Switching #VLANS # Configuration. Click on the Create Button.! Enter the VLAN Name and VLAN ID. Click Apply. 2. Create a Hunt Group.! Select L2 Switching # Hunt groups.! Enter Hunt Group name and click Apply. 8 of 14

9 Step Description 3. Map Ethernet ports attached to the Windows NT Server to VLAN3 and the Hunt Group created in step 2. Repeat these steps for both ports.! Select Modules & Ports # Configuration. Select module and click on Switch Port # Switch Port Name Links.! Select VLAN3 for Port VLAN and click Apply. 9 of 14

11 Step Description 4. Map the Ethernet ports attached to the Windows NT Workstations to VLAN3. Repeat these steps for both ports.! Select Modules & Ports # Configuration. Select module and click on Switch Port # Switch Port Name Links.! Select VLAN3 for Port VLAN and click Apply. 11 of 14

12 Step Description 5. Create an IP Gateway Interface (Ex: IP: ) on the P882 switch:! Select Routing # IP # Configuration # Interfaces. Click on the Create Button.! Enter interface name, IP address, subnet mask, select VLAN and click Apply. 12 of 14

13 Step Description 6. Save the Configuration. Click on System, System Reset, and Save Links. 5. NIC Load Balancing Feature Validation The Hunt Group/Load Balancing link redundancy feature was confirmed to work by verifying there was end-to-end connectivity between the Server and the workstation when either link was disconnected. The link aggregation featured was verified using the NetIQ Chariot test tool. The Port Statistics screen on the Avaya P882 Switch confirmed that the primary adapter in the Compaq Load Balancing Team receives all incoming packets, while they are transmitted over the remaining adapter as per the device capabilities, thus optimizing traffic flow from the server. 6. Conclusion The Hunt Group and Adaptive Load Balancing features of the Avaya P882 MultiService switch and the Compaq Gigabit Adapters respectively, allow bandwidth to be aggregated across multiple links into a single, logical group to increase capacity, fault tolerance, and balance network loads. 13 of 14
