Jargon Duo Core/Quad Core: Clock Speed

Memory RAM = Random Access Memory Stores the instructions for programs and the data that is used. Usually sold in multiples of.5gb, 1GB, 2GB etc. (more on this later) Not enough RAM can result in low performance.

Physical Aspects Microscopic capacitors hold the bits that represent data Most RAM is volatile Requires electrical power to hold data

The letter 'A' BINARY: DECIMAL: 65 "Hi, Pat!"

How big is big? One of those cells is referred to as a bit. Eight cells are a byte. Usually a byte is the basic unit used to talk about the size of something such as file or the amount of memory in a computer. We talk about memory in increments of : 1KB - Approximately 1,000 bytes 1MB - Approximately 1,000,000 bytes 1GB - Approximately 1,000,000,000 bytes 1TB - Approximately 1,000,000,000 bytes

What you need to know At a minimum Windows 7 needs 2 GB of RAM. That's a minimum. It is recommended that you invest in 4GB RAM to ensure decent performance and allow your computer to grow with your needs.

Disk Drive Disks provide secondary storage Each disk is identified by a letter, followed by a colon D: E: C: H:

Operating Systems Software that manages the hardware and basic operations of the computer Common operating systems: Microsoft Windows (e.g., XP, pocketpc) Macintosh OS Unix variants (e.g., Linux, Solaris) ios 11

Operating System Windows 7 Kernel Hardware

Boot up

Software Applications Programs built on top of the OS that support basic user tasks Common Applications: Word Processing Spreadsheets Databases Electronic Mail Presentation Software Browsers (internet access)

Downloading from the internet

Local Area Network A local area network (LAN) is a computer network covering a local area, like a home, office, or group of buildings. Current LANs are most likely to be based on technology running at 10, 100 or 1,000 Mbit/s. Ref:

Wide Area Network (WAN) WANs are used to connect local area networks (LANs) together, so that users and computers in one location can communicate with users and computers in other locations. The largest and most wellknown example of a WAN is the Internet. Ref:

IP IP = Internet Protocol Provides the address mechanism. Basic format of an IP address is four 3 digit numbers. The first set of digits identify the network. The remaining identify the specific computer. The MAC address is mapped to the IP address

More Vocabulary Browser: Graphically based software that is a client that requests web page content from a server and displays it (Firefox, Internet Explorer) Web Site: A server providing web page content on demand.

DMCA Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 On May 22, 2001, the European Union passed the EU Copyright Directive or EUCD RIAA - MPAA - Criminalizes the copying and transport of copyrighted works and the creation of applications or hardware to assist. How this affects IT: DMCA Notices and Lawsuits Internal Sharing of Copyrighted Material To block or not Peer to Peer (P2P) Applications Applies to all Organizations with networks.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer v. Grokster Grokster targeted users that were former Napster users. Did not TRY to develop filtering tools to diminish copyright infringement. It s business models reflected that revenues were directly linked to USE of the software.
