4 Europe s 500Gbps network - e-infrastructure for the data deluge Co-funded by the EU and Europe s NRENs Connects NRENs across Europe Latest transmission and switching technology Routers with 100Gbps capability Optical transmission platform designed to provide 500Gbps super-channels 27,114km of dark fibre Over 100,000km of leased capacity (including transatlantic connections) 28 main sites covering European footprint 4

6 GÉANT Open - Open for business Users able to connect are: GÉANT and other international R&E network providers National and regional R&E networks Approved commercial operators Individual research facilities Connections at 1Gbps, 10Gbps or 100Gbps GÉANT Open is an open exchange based in London to support both European and worldwide interconnects for research and education Production service with full NOC support and SLA monitoring Provides for interconnections with all other connected users and GÉANT to provide inter-organisation connectivity 6

8 GÉANT Innovation Programme - Open Call initiative New action started in 2013 for R&D research within the GÉANT project 3.3 million of funding for the following areas: Applications & Tools Authentication Network Architecture & Optical Projects Software-Defined Networking Awards granted to total of 21 independent projects Inclusion of additional 30 partners from across Europe Enables GÉANT to benefit from expertise in universities, research institutes and commercial organisations not previously in GÉANT 8

11 edugain inter-federation - Working globally and across sectors Continued operation and growth of the edugain service GÉANT CoCo (Code of Conduct) as well as further develop Data Protection CoCo worldwide Global Engagement (CEO Forum, ELCIRA) Member federations in Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Japan & USA Federations joining in Argentina, Australia, Japan & New Zealand 11

14 edupert - In a nutshell edupert is a world-wide Open Community for Performance Enhancement Response Teams, a virtual organisation covering performance issues for R&E networks. edupert is moving an extended field of action towards the end-users, researchers and academic ICTs an umbrella for all NREN PERT teams. edupert supports and is linking new technologies as clouds and network research Contact: pert-discuss@geant.net 14 14

16 Supporting Users: GÉANT User Liaison Function International organisations, projects and collaborations Discuss and understand user requirements Co-ordinate the formulation of solutions for the user Technical, organisational, financial Formulate information on architectures, services needed, financial information, operational models Co-ordinate discussion with all relevant stakeholders, above all each NREN Be the voice of the customer/user within GÉANT Involve Subject Matter Experts (e.g. AAI, ) Works in tight co-operation with lead NREN 16

17 EUMETSAT Multicast of Environmental Data Meteorological data from EUMETSAT satellites need to be distributed to sites in Europe, Asia and USA. EUMETSAT requires network infrastructure that enables terrestrial multicast dissemination to end sites. EUMETSAT and GÉANT are running a two-year multicast prototype emulating operational scenarios from the EUMETSAT HQ in Darmstadt, using GÉANT infrastructure in Europe and global connectivity Agreement provides a Single Point of Contact to EUMETSAT for the related network services across GÉANT and the corresponding National Networks. 17

18 EUMETSAT-NOAA Multicast Interconnectivity ICTBIOMED: International Consortium for Technology in Biomedicine Aims to address challenges in biomedical research, e.g. data infrastructure for better healthcare Participants: Center For Advanced Development of Advanced Computing, India: PSNC (Poland), University of Notre Dame (USA); Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden); Collaboration between Indian Space Science Data Center & CNES (Centre National d Étude Spatiale), Toulouse, France 18

19 EUMETSAT-NOAA Multicast Interconnectivity aginfra An open infrastructure to connect and share agricultural data. Led by University of Alcalá de Henares, Spain Other participants include the Indian Statistical Institute, 12 other institutions in Europe, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science, and Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN FAO, and a couple of commercial partners) Open Source Drug Discovery Lead by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Collaboration to solve problems in discovering new therapies for tropical diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, Leishmaniasis Access to global genomics repositories Collaboration with institutions outside Europe including Cambridge University & Indiana University 19
