OIF 2018 Interop Demo Survey Supplementary Information
Use Case I: Network Slicing Benefits: Create/manage/operate isolated network slices for different demands in parallel, e.g., for 5G applications Builds on OIF VTNS work Example Sequence Step 1: Customer sends request to Orchestrator to setup up a network slice (virtual network) Specified ServiceEndPoint, Constraints (Traffic Matrix, Service Level, etc.) and Start/End Time. Step 2: Orchestrator generates virtual network instance and responds to Customer Orchestrator builds the mapping relationship between created virtual network and physical network Virtual network ID and Virtual Topology ID are both included in the response. 2 OIF Copyright 2017
Use Case IIa. Network Re-optimization Service demands are presented to an SDN controller on first-come/first-served basis Connection routing finds lowest cost path based on current network state Paths selected for earlier connections may preclude new services Changing the route used by existing connections would allow new service instances to be admitted to network 3 OIF Copyright 2017
New links may be added to the network IIa. Network Re-optimization Existing connections do not take advantage of lower cost paths New service requests may be precluded Again, changing the route used by existing connections would allow new service instances to be admitted to network Network re-optimization addresses both of these scenarios: Service Provider initiated Moves connections with minimal disruption by using make-before-break Capacity becomes available for new connections 4 OIF Copyright 2017
Use Case IIb. Client Re-optimization Service demands are presented to an SDN controller on first-come/first-served basis A Service Endpoint may reference multiple Network Edge ports Route/Endpoint with lowest cost path is chosen Client system may become overloaded yet Network and Edge port have capacity - New connections delivered to degraded Client connected to Service Endpoint Client state awareness enables network to choose alternate Edge Port for delivery. 5 OIF Copyright 2017
New Edge ports may become available for Service Endpoint Use Case IIb. Client Re-optimization Existing connections do not take advantage of new Edge Ports Moving traffic to new Edge Ports will: - lower service delivery cost - reduce client congestion issues Client re-optimization: - learns about new edge ports - relocates services to lower cost edge ports - learns about edge port status - relocates services to reduce client load 6 OIF Copyright 2017
Use Case III. CORD Interconnection Use Case Benefits Demonstrates interconnection of carrier CORD sites using Transport SDN Builds on DCI interconnection functions, significant interest in CORD deployment Example Sequence CORD Controller requests connection across multi-domain network for new VNF CORD Controller retrieves status/usage info CORD Controller resizes connection based on new demands/conditions CORD: Central Office Rearchitected as a Datacenter 7 OIF Copyright 2017
Use Case IVa. Multi-layer Setup Service set will fail if a controller is limited to a single layer and no links exist in that layer with the capacity required to reach the far service endpoint Allowing the service layer controller to invoke lower layer connection(s) recursively, enables the service layer to dynamically setup the links required to provide the service requested 8 OIF Copyright 2017
Use Case IVb. Multi-layer Reroute Service reroute may also fail if a controller is limited to a single layer. Allowing the service layer controller to invoke lower layer connection(s) on reroute may restore the service. Allowing the service layer controller to invoke lower layer connection(s) recursively, enables the service layer to dynamically setup the links required to reroute the affected service. 9 OIF Copyright 2017
