5 Lanlink Functional Description In a hurry to get the system set up? Skip to sections 3, Installation, & 4, Configuration. Long Range Up to 30 Miles Deploy Today License Free Plug and Play Configuration requires virtually no setup Secure Prevents unauthorized access with multiple security levels No Path Surveys Guaranteed to work with a working 950 MHz link Easy to Install Duplexer allows easy RF connections to existing antenna and line infrastructure Future Proof Broadcast and professional audio products will soon be TCP/IP capable Network Management SNMP/Web Server The Lanlink 900 is a long-range high-speed wireless IP/Ethernet Facility Controller solution designed by a company with its roots in broadcasting for over 40 years. It allows broadcasters to take advantage of existing 950 MHz aural STL antenna infrastructures and bring LAN connectivity along with two RS- 232 data circuits between a single Studio and multiple Transmitter/Studio Sites. The Lanlink 900 connects remote controls, audio codecs for back-up STL, and can provide other ancillary audio/video connectivity. The Lanlink 900 uses advanced 900 MHz FHSS technology for license-free operation in the MHz ISM band. It is capable of up to a 30-mile range and up to 512 kbps data rate for IP/Ethernet connections. Two RS-232 ports that can be set between ,200 bps offer additional utility. Installation is simple and straightforward with industry standard RS Pin D s and RJ-45 connectors for external devices. RF connections are made to an optional duplexer designed to accommodate both the Lanlink 900 and current 950 MHz Aural STLs. 6 1-2 Lanlink 900 Please note, that because there are two duplexers now in the STL system path, the STL system gain is reduced by approximately 3dB (1.5dB for each duplexer). In most well-engineered systems, this should not be an issue. However, as an added benefit, since the duplexers are a band-pass configuration, STL receiver front-end protection is added against adjacent interfering signals, such as pager systems. 1.1 System Hardware The Lanlink 900 consists of a Lanlink Radio, a power supply, and an optional high-performance duplexer. 9 Lanlink Installation Typically, the Lanlink Radio at the studio site (STL transmitter) will be configured as an Access Point, and the Lanlink Radio at the transmitter site (STL receiver) will be configured as a Remote Dual Gateway. This is how the Lanlink Radios are programmed at the factory. Much grief can be avoided by placing the proper Lanlink at each location. Check the rear of the Lanlink for a small sticker with either AP or DG to discern between the two. It is highly recommend that the Access Point be installed first. This way, it will be possible to quickly check the operation of any associated Remote unit as it is placed on air. Caution: Do not apply power to Lanlink or STL radios unless an antenna or dummy load is connected to the antenna port of the radios. Damage to the radios may occur and is not covered under warranty. AP Figure 3-1 Lanlink 900 connections Set up the Lanlink thusly: a. Turn off the power of all equipment to be connected. b. Install the equipment in its final location. 1 c. Connect the supplied TNC-to-N cable between the Lanlink Radio link port and the duplexer Low port. d. Connect the supplied N-to-N cable between the STL antenna port and the duplexer STL port. 2 e. Connect the antenna system to the duplexer Ant port. 3 f. Connect the Ethernet and Serial ports as required for your application. See Section 5, Connectors and Cabling g. Apply power to all equipment. h. Configure the Lanlink Radio for your application. See Section 4, configuration. i. Monitor system performance using the monitoring system accessible via the built-in web server, telnet server, or serial terminal server. Notes: 1 It is recommended that 1RU of space be left between chassis for proper ventilation and RF isolation between units. Lanlink 900 Quick Setup Guide Rev A1
10 3-2 Lanlink No adjustments to the STLs are required. 3 No adjustments to the existing STL antenna system are required if the antennas were previously aligned properly for the STLs. If this is a new installation of STLs as well as Lanlinks, consult the STL manual for antenna installation requirements Rev A Lanlink 900 Quick Setup Guide
11 Lanlink Configuration Typically, the Lanlink Radio at the studio site (STL transmitter) will be configured as an Access Point, and the Lanlink Radio at the transmitter site (STL receiver) will be configured as a Remote Dual Gateway. This is how the Lanlink Radios are programmed at the factory. If you need a different configuration, see the Lanlink 900 User s Guide To change the Lanlink configuration, perform the following steps for each radio: a. Connect a computer s serial port to the Lanlink Radio COM1 Port connector using a straight through cable. (Defaults: 19,200 bps / 8N1 / no handshaking / VT100) b. Launch a terminal emulator program such as Tera Term Pro or HyperTerminal on the computer. Configuration: 19,200 bps / 8N1 / no handshaking / VT100 c. Press the Enter key. A login screen will be displayed that will require a password to access the Lanlink Management System. A password is required to make changes to all parameters. The default password is admin. login: Lanlink password: d. A screen similar to this appears: Moseley Lanlink 900 Starting Information Screen -===============================================================- Device Mode: Access Point Device Name: Lanlink Access Point Network Name: Moseley IP Address: Device Status: Operational Uptime: 00 hrs, 00 min Firmware Version: Hardware Version: Serial Number: Press G to go to the Main Menu: Press 'G' to go to Main Menu Main Menu -===============================================================- A) Starting Information Screen E) Security Configuration B) Network Configuration F) Device Information C) Radio Configuration G) Performance Information D) Serial Gateway Configuration H) Maintenance / Tools Select a letter to configure an item, 'Q' to exit menu Lanlink 900 Quick Setup Guide Rev A1
12 4-2 Lanlink 900 e. Configure the Lanlink Radio output power. Warning: The FCC stipulates that in the ISM band, where the Lanlink Radio operates, the maximum power that an antenna can radiate is 4W, or +36dBm EIRP. It is your responsibility to comply with this FCC mandate before operating the Lanlink Radio. You will need to know the antenna gain and cable losses for your system before you can complete this step. The general equation for satisfying ISM-band EIRP requirements is POWER RADIO LOSS ATTENUATOR LOSS DUPLEXER LOSS CABLING + GAIN ANTENNA +36 dbm, where POWER is in dbm and LOSS and GAIN are in db. Note that there is an extra term for a user-supplied attenuator, which may be required to satisfy the FCC requirements. An attenuator that will handle at least 2W is placed between the Link port of the Lanlink Radio and the Duplexer Low port. You must adjust the first two terms of the equation, Lanlink radio power output and attenuator value, since the last three are fixed. Appropriate attenuators can be purchased from vendors such as Meca Electronics: Midisco: Minicircuits: or your favorite broadcast distributor The output power of the Lanlink Radio can be adjusted from +20dBm (0.1W) to +30dBm (1.0W). The duplexer loss is typically 1.0dB. Here are some examples of settings using typical cabling losses and antenna gains to meet the FCC requirements: POWER OUT RADIO (20dBm to 30dBm) LOSS LOSS LOSS + GAIN = EIRP ATTENUATOR (db) DUPLEXER (db) CABLING (db) ANTENNA (db) (dbm) = = = = Rev A Lanlink 900 Quick Setup Guide
