Peering with Akamai CaribNOG November 2015 Belize City, Belize
The Akamai Intelligent Platform Highly distributed, deeply deployed on-demand computing platform that serves any kind of web traffic and applications 200,000+ Servers 2,000+ Locations 1,300+ Networks Cities 110+ Countries 100+ IXPs Typical daily traffic: More than 2 trillion requests served Delivering over 30 Terabits/second 15-30% of all daily web traffic
2015 AKAMAI FASTER FORWARDTM
Frequently Asked Questions What does this mean for my network and customers? How does it work? Does it work? Why am I seeing this traffic over here? Why am I seeing that traffic over there?
What does this mean for my network and customers? Akamai have clusters deployed all over the world We have clusters placed with: ISPs of all shapes and sizes Internet Exchanges Transit providers Embedded cluster in ISP ISP Co-located Cluster with IX We try to answer an end-user request from the cluster best able to do so Mapping system Internet Transit That s not always the one you think it might be Infrastructure Cluster with Transit
How does it work? - Mapping The key ability of any CDN is its ability to direct end-users to content We call this Mapping - it s a CDN s secret sauce Proper mapping makes the world a better place Better performance Lower cost Happy networks Happy Users HAPPY CUSTOMERS 1 example.com? example.com? 2 a212.g.akamai.net 3 For Akamai, mapping is primarily done with DNS 6 4
How does it work? - Mapping Akamai Mapping steers requests by returning different A records to different requests: <boston>$ dig +noall +answer IN CNAME IN CNAME e9808.b.akamaiedge.net.! e9808.b.akamaiedge.net. 2 IN A !! <dublin>$ dig +noall +answer IN CNAME IN CNAME e9808.b.akamaiedge.net.! e9808.b.akamaiedge.net. 20 IN A !! <belize>$ dig +noall +answer IN CNAME IN CNAME e9808.b.akamaiedge.net.! e9808.b.akamaiedge.net. 20 IN A !
Does it work? Of course it does! When returning DNS responses Akamai s Mapping system takes into account criteria like: Availability of content Performance (latency, throughput, packet loss) Load (network, CPU, disk) Cost of delivery You might not see content coming from where you expect it to
Why am I seeing this traffic over here? No one cluster can hold all content Selection of the best able cluster is dynamic - metrics change constantly Some content is best suited to certain hardware big vs small objects Ecommerce? Mapping Problems Geo-location Inconsistent routing
Why am I seeing that traffic over there? Resolving Name Server location Some content is subject to licensing restrictions As one cluster reaches capacity demand is mapped to another In general, we try to serve from local clusters first, then peering, then transit
What s this got to do with peering? Peering gets us closer Peer Network Makes a more attractive path (If you re an ISP that could mean more bits to sell downstream) Improves performance IX Keeps traffic off transit Keeps traffic off backhaul CDN Servers Gives us more paths over which to serve Transit Origin Server
But your network is broken, I tried Peering here Peering there Prepending MEDs Swearing More specifics Akamai doesn t have a network - each cluster is an island Mapping is about end-to-end delivery, not just routing (bgp?) Talk to us - we can help! - <peering@akamai.com>
What does it look like? w0d 21! w2d 20! w2d 7! w3d 12! w3d 15!! w3d 773! w1d 773! Each cluster announces a different set of prefixes Content is not tied to the IP addresses serving it The more clusters you peer with the more resources and variety of content we have available to serve you
