PEERING AND BENEFITS Martin Hannigan Director, Network and Data Center Architecture CaribNOG 9 Castries, St. Lucia
Agenda What is an Internet Exchange Point (IXP)? What is Peering? Why networks use IXPs How IXPs help Akamai Akamai s Peering Statistics How Akamai uses IXPs St. Lucia Peering Potential Benefits Questions
What is a Internet Exchange Point? A location where networks meet to exchange traffic Typically an IXP is in a data center facility with an Ethernet switch in the middle A network usually brings a spur of their network into the facility and connects to the switch networks who agree to Peer can exchange traffic between their networks over the switch With a single connection, an networks can connect to 10 s or 100s of other networks
What is Peering? Peering is an arrangement between two networks to exchange traffic, usually for free Peering requires a BGP session to direct traffic Just because two networks are at a IX does not mean they will peer Most large/incumbent networks will not peer with small networks, they want to force the small networks to buy transit and access to their users Network B IX Network A
What is Peering? You may only send bits to a peer for end users on that peers network Sending bits to a peer for end users not on his network is the definition of transit Network B IX Network C Network A
Why Networks Use IXPs The first and foremost reason to use an IXP is to reduce costs Bits usually cost more to send over transit than the IX connection IXPs are also useful for performance reasons A network can trade bits with many other networks directly, instead of sending bits through a transit network Performance Reducing hops and equipment between networks typically optimizes performance and may even increase reliability
How Akamai and IXPs benefit together Akamai uses IXPs for the exact same reasons Iothers use IXPs - to increase performance and decrease costs IXPs are part of Akamai s AANP-IX deployment program, providing for a presence where we wouldn t be before IXPs are also a good source of BGP data for the Akamai Mapping System, the way distribute content to the Internet
Akamai s Peering Statistics Akamai has thousands of BGP sessions with thousands of unique ASNs at IXP s globally Akamai is co-located at over 100 IXPs on five continents Last month, Akamai sent terrabits tb/s of capacity over Internet public peering We did it over 1GE, 10GE and 100GE interconnections We did it everywhere including the Islands.
How Akamai uses IXPs IX Akamai servers located at IXP There is a router between it and the IXP The router has a connection to a transit provider Transit Akamai Cache
How Akamai uses IXPs Peer Network Peers Peers IX BGP session Akamai sets up BGP session between our router and peer s router Peering session only allows traffic between end users on each network End users on the peer network are served web pages from the Akamai cache Akamai Cache Transit
How Akamai uses IXPs Peer Network Peers The transit connection is used to retrieve pages from the origin server Akamai then serves the page to the end user on the peer network Peers IX Akamai Cache Transit Origin Server
St. Lucia Peering What could peering in St. Lucia look like?
Benefits - Financial Assume ~600 mb/s to Akamai ASN Let s be conservative; Assume ~300 mb/s deliverable Transit costs to get these bits $ th percentile billing Value is $30,000 MR, $360,000 YR 300 mb/s * $100 = $30,000 $30,000 * 12 = $360,000 POWERING A BETTER INTERNET
Benefits - Performance Faster many things Served by peers vs. MIA Network to Network hosting , although most is off island anyhow Equalization Fair performance for incumbents vs. local players Faster social media Faster on-island distribution Increased resiliency/control Removing hair pin/trombone routing POWERING A BETTER INTERNET
DO IT A switch that works, even used Enough ports for everyone to participate Supportable, somehow Control, must be a mechanism to secure A cost sharing model Must be sustainable**** Port based pricing is a standard There should be savings set aside for growth Volunteers. Will fail without them Everything else is nice to have Outgrowing is a good problem POWERING A BETTER INTERNET
