3 What is vprotect? Storware vprotect is an enterprise backup solution for virtual environments. It facilitates the implementation of virtual machine backup running on open platforms such as Citrix XenServer, Xen (based on a regular Linux distribution), RHEV, ovirt, KVM, KVM for IBMz and Oracle VM. By using hot-clone feature one is now able to quickly push VM s backup to vprotect Server. Dynamic reconfigurations are available directly from web interface. It s a solution that extends capabilities of IBM Spectrum Protect Family (IBM Tivoli Storage Manager) by providing a comprehensive, scalable protection for Citrix XenServer environments. 3 P a g e

4 How backups are performed? Using snapshot based backup strategy, one can quickly backup not only data but also configuration of the running virtual machines. Storware vprotect also provides easy to use CLI and web UI management interfaces. Backups can be stored in IBM Spectrum Protect, OpenStack Swift object storage as well as local storage. It is now easy to use existing OpenStack Swift instance to store and keep backups of VMs according to specific retention policy. 4 P a g e

5 Prepare your local storage Minimum version of the fuse plug-in is 2.8. First create in "EMC Data Domain System Manager" storage unit vprotect, and set user as vprotect. Download DD Boost File System plug-in package, and install it on vprotect server. Now vprotect server CPU will be used to deduplicate data. yum install -y DDBoostFS rhel.x86_64.rpm 5 P a g e

7 Set credentials to EMC Data Domain storage. /opt/emc/boostfs/bin/boostfs lockbox set -d s vprotect -u vprotect Create directory to mount EMC Data Domain storage. mkdir /ddboostfs Mount storage from EMC Data Domain. /opt/emc/boostfs/bin/boostfs mount -d ddt -s vprotect /ddboostfs 7 P a g e

8 Install and configure vprotect Next download, and unpack actual install package vprotect install.tgz from tar -xvf vprotect install.tgz Change directory to vprotect-install. cd vprotect-install Run installation script../install.sh 8 P a g e

9 Select 2 to set Local Storage. Type your storage path example: /ddboostfs. Type No to not enable Open Deduplication. If you want enable SSL connection to vprotect type Yes. If you plan protect RHV, RHEV, Ovirt, Oracle VM, then type Yes, to install NFS services. Later you should edit /etc/exports file. After successful installation log in to vprotect. 11 In General tab select backup provider "FILE_SYSTEM". Enter export path. Make sure that /vprotect_data localization have enough free space, equal to the largest protected VM. If you want keep last backup locally select "Keep last backup locally" checkbox. 11 P a g e

12 Go to "File System" tab. Enter storage path on your vprotect server. Click on the "Save" to save settings. 12 P a g e

13 Configure NFS share Login to your vprotect server, and create NFS share to all RHV, ovirt or Oracle VM hosts. Edit /etc/exports file. You can change "*" to IP of the RHV, ovirt or Oracle VM host. /vprotect_data *(fsid=0,rw,sync,insecure,all_squash,anonuid=0,anongid=0) After that reload NFS service. exportfs -r service nfs reload 13 P a g e

14 Configure RHV backup Login to your RHV Administration Portal, and add export Domain. 14 P a g e

15 After successful configuration log in to vprotect. Click on Go to RHEV/oVirt tab, and type RHV export domain as "Backup storage domain". Click "Save". 15 P a g e

16 Go to "Hypervisors" tab. Add new hypervisor manager, click on Type IP of RHV hypervisor manager, user name, password. Chose type of hypervisor manager "Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization". Click on the "OK" to save settings. Click right mouse button on the RHV manager, then select "Index VMs". 16 P a g e

18 Configure Oracle VM backup Login to your OVM Manager, and add nfs repository. Remember ID of vprotect repository. After successful configuration log in to vprotect. Click on Go to Oracle VM tab, and type OVM export domain as "Backup storage repository id". Click "Save". 18 P a g e

19 Go to "Hypervisors" tab. Add new hypervisor manager, click on Type IP of OVM hypervisor manager, user name, password. Chose type of hypervisor manager " Oracle VM Manager". Click on the "OK" to save settings. 19 P a g e

21 Configure KVM, XEN backup Login to your vprotect server, and add KVM, XEN host to the list of known hosts. Run command with KVM, XEN IP, accept connection, and type password. ssh -o HostKeyAlgorithms=ssh-rsa After establish connection exit from session. After successful configuration log in to vprotect. Click on Go to "Hypervisors" tab. Add new hypervisor, click on. Type IP of KVM/XEN hypervisor, user name, password. Chose type of hypervisor "KVM" or XEN. 23 Summary This document shows that backup implementation for RHV/oVirt environments with EMC DD Boost File System plug-in can be easy. Storware vprotect provides an intuitive GUI, which enables quick setup of the scheduled backup, easy VM restore joined with powerful deduplication capabilities of EMC DD Boost. It is also worth to note, that vprotect supports most of the open virtualization platforms, including libvirt based (KVM/Xen) or Citrix XenServer, and all of them can be stored in EMC Data Domain.
