Guaranteed Service Ethernetbased DWDM co-hauling Carla Raffaelli, Federico Tonini, University of Bologna, DEI, Italy Steinar Bjornstad, Raimena Veisllari Transpacket, Oslo, Norway
This talk is To address scalability issues in 5 G access segments by enhanced optical network concepts To introduce the integrated hybrid optical network enabling technology To show a proof of the concept based on commercial equipment To outline why research needs to go further
Evolving Network Access scenarios in 5G MIMO enhanced antenna sites Functional splitting solutions for flexibility and programmability (front-haul, back-haul, midhaul... x -haul) Network Function Virtualization to implement C-RAN (Centralized/Cloud Radio Access Networks) Software Defined Network control and management for dynamic function allocation
Design challenges in x -haul access Optical networks as candidate technology CWDM, DWDM Solutions for scalability of the WDM system Enhanced efficiency in optical channels Low latency guaranteed service solutions both for front- and back- haul needs Enhancing time transparency while increasing efficiency Enabling technologies Radio format (e.g. CPRI) mapping in Ethernet frames, not enough yet
Proposal: co-hauling technology Based on integrated hybrid optical technology: Front-haul: framing of radio formats (e.g. CPRI) into Ethernet virtual wavelengths» low fixed latency, ultra-low latency variation in ns range, no loss Back-haul: further increase wavelength s utilization by adding lower priority Statistically Multiplexed traffic. Integrated hybrid technology already demonstrated at 10 Gb/s to scale up Wavelength services at sub-wavelength granularity Redundancy/protection also available with sub-ms switching time
Integrated hybrid enabling technology in Ethernet Switches GST: Guaranteed Service Transport SM: Statistically Multiplexed traffic FPGA-based enhanced Ethernet switches GST packets are delayed for a fixed time, corresponding to the SM maximum transmission unit (MTU) (e. g. a few ms) GST gap detector updates information on the free gaps before SM insertion SM scheduler schedules SM packets at the head of the SM queues which fit in the gaps, to avoid SM preemption.
Co-hauling based on integrated hybrid optical ring: an example CO1 Site 1 RRHs RoEth mapper Fronthaul GE Virtual wavelength Fronthaul GE Virtual wavelengths RRHs RoEth mapper Converged Fronthaul/Backhaul: CO-HAULING CO2 IP/MPLS Packet Core network Site 2 Converged front-haul and back-haul functionalities on the same WDM infrastructure Dynamic association of sites to central offices (COs) for load balancing, energy saving, protection purposes Additional backhaul packet traffic is also protected and sent over the same physical wavelengths Full benefits from NFV/SDN deployment
Research push of integrated hybrid technology in 5G context Enhanced capacity solution (10G and beyond) Extended multi-class wavelength service Combined time/wavelength fusion in elastic optical networks Optimized design of the co-hauling architecture Software Defined Network management and dynamic architecture adaptation for load balancing and network resilience
Thank you!
