About Us Elfsys Embedded Solutions Pvt. Ltd. is an innovation driven company, which provides products and solutions for embedded wireless networking applications. Elfsys is led by five IIT Delhi alumni and two faculty members of Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Delhi. It started its operation in 2004 and is currently located in Technology Business Incubation Unit of IIT Delhi, which provides backing to innovative technology startups. Founding Team Elfsys was founded by two highly experienced faculty members and four enthusiastic alumni of Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Delhi: Prof. Santanu Chaudhury Chairman PhD. from IIT Kharagpur Computer vision, Multimedia and Embedded systems Prof. Subrat Kar PhD. from IISc. Bangalore Telecommunication networks and Embedded systems Arpan Phull BTech EE from IITD Praval Jain BTech EE from IITD Robin Jacob MS EE from IITD BE EE from Madras University Vipul Chawla BTech EE from IITD
Embedded technologies are revolutionizing the way we live and interact with the things around us. Today billions of microcontrollers are built into various products every year. Enabling these devices with low-cost and low-power wireless networking capabilities can add a lot more to their functionality and will also ease their deployment. Elfsys aims to become the leaders in this vast and growing field. Technology Elfsys is focusing on wireless sensor networks technology as a platform for growth. Typically, an embedded wireless network is to operate in a resource constrained scenario, where the amount of energy and bandwidth available is limited. Still, they should ensure high reliability and robustness i.e. the network should be capable of enduring failure of some nodes and should still be able to provide connectivity to remaining working nodes. Also, least amount of manual intervention is desired, so as such the network should be self-configuring and self-healing. These embedded wireless networking modules can be integrated with different kinds of sensors and actuators such as temperature, pressure, vibration, sound or video information, to form a network of sensors. These nodes can now route their readings to a base station, where the readings can be processed to make useful judgments and control signals can be sent back to nodes having actuators. Such a system can be deployed in industries, buildings and compounds, to provide monitoring and control functionalities. What we can do for you? Elfsys can provide its clients with end-to-end solutions, where we can customize our hardware/software according to the clients requirements. We also provide wireless sensor network development kit for OEMs using which they can easily integrate our products into their existing system. Also, we cater to the needs of research and educational institutions by providing our sensor motes and networking stack libraries in the form of an educational kit.
Elfsys has developed and strenuously tested complete wireless sensor network infrastructure CpiderNet. It includes: sensor motes Rete, sensor networking stack ElfNet and software front-end ELFscope. Their main features are: Rete Characteristics: 433 MHz operation with wireless range of ~100 feet indoors and ~1000 feet outdoors Low data rate (up to 38.4 Kbps) SMA monopole antenna for better RF performance Versatile 32-pin connector, that provide access to most of the peripherals of the controller 1. 3 Parallel ports 2. 1 UART port (RS-232 Serial Port) 3. 4 ADC channels 4. 1 I2C bus interface 5. 3 V regulated power supply (can be used for powering external sensors) Integrated battery Power and battery management unit on board for charging and operation from 9 V DC adapter Integrated temperature and light sensors Ultra low power, with a life time of 2 years on AA batteries with 30 seconds sampling time. Battery life can be extended by increasing sampling time RETE - wireless sensor mote *Other versions of the hardware with lesser number of I/Os and smaller sizes are also available. Also, Elfsys has the complete expertise to customize the hardware according to customer requirements.
ElfNet Characteristics: ElfNet is a low-power consuming, self-configuring and selfhealing wireless sensor networking stack. It has been developed for application requiring low-bandwidth and long battery life and capable of operating in harsh environments. Its main features are: Bidirectional routing Messages can be sent from sensing points to basestation and vise-versa. This capability allows for sending calibration signals to sensors and digital commands to actuators from base-station. Self-configuring for easy deployment New nodes can be introduced into the network by just bringing them in and waiting for green led to turn-on, indicating that the new node is now a part of the network. A Typical Sensor Network Topology Self-healing for reliability and easy network alterations Because of inherent redundancy in the network, if any existing node is removed from the network, it automatically reconfigures to find new routes. This property of ElfNet ensures reliable network operation and snag-free additions/up-gradation. Sensor Libraries The stack comes bundled with libraries of generally used sensors like proximity, temperature, light, GPS etc.
ELFscope Characteristics: ELFscope is a user interface for Elfsys wireless sensor network - "Cpider Net", which hides all the back-end complexities and present the data-collected in a meaningful manner. ELFscope comes loaded with a number of functionalities for datacollection, analysis and display: Real-time Monitoring The software supports automatic inclusion/removal of new/old nodes. It keeps an updated list of current readings from sensors attached to nodes. It also keeps track of battery status and gives a visual-warning, incase of low battery. Command and Control ELFscope provides an easy to use interface for sending commands and control signals to sensor nodes, which are a part of the network. Database and Charting Readings from sensors are logged into standard database. ELFscope has been built using ADO components, which provide complete flexibility for its integration with any data source. Plotting facilities are available for plotting logged sensor readings. Topology and Mapping Real-time network logical topology can be monitored, in-order to keep track for network status. Also, images of map can be imported in the background and nodes can be dragged placed over the map. This provides a useful visualization of the deployed network. GPS based Tracking If GPS is attached to any of the node in the network, then ELFscope can track the node and visually present the node's path and position. It also logs the nodes path in database. *Other applications/features can be added according to customer requirements. Also, basic database, network data retrieval, command and plotting APIs can be provided to help client build their own applications.
Environment monitoring and control Wireless nodes with temperature and light sensor, along with actuators can provide the functionality of centralized control of all lighting and ventilating systems, without the need of laying expensive cables. Such systems can be used for HVAC and lighting control applications to create energy efficient homes and industrial complexes. Industrial monitoring and process control Sensors can detect if the environmental conditions are optimum or not for a particular industrial process and hence provide the user with real time capability of controlling the process. The whole process can be automated with intelligent scenario generation capability at the base station. Oil/Gas Pipeline monitoring A pipeline monitoring system is used to ensure leak detection or prevention by monitoring factors such as flow, viscosity, temperature and the surrounding environment. However, supplying power along a pipeline hundreds of kilometers long is very difficult, which makes installation of such a monitoring system almost impossible. However sensor networks can provide a solution, where battery operated wireless nodes can operate for years together. Security and Defense For providing real time awareness of intrusion, sensor nodes can be deployed in a compound with sound or movement sensing capability. This information can be relayed back to the base station so as to alert the security personnel. Unattended sensors can be positioned by unmanned drones, air-drop deployment or left behind by units moving through a hostile area. Nodes must self-organize and maintain a continuous pathway for reporting sensitive information back to the base station. Inventory control and supply chain management Sensor networks can be used to track inventory as well as keep a record of its environmental conditions. This can be used to check if the goods suffered damage during transport or storage due to unfavorable environmental conditions. Similar systems can also be of great help at ports to facilitate handling and location of containers and shipments. Utility Industry Most of the utility companies send their technicians to each and every customer s home to collect meter readings, who often deliberately or inadvertently report incorrect readings. A wireless sensor network configured to collect readings and relay them to the central station automatically would solve many of the reliability issues facing utility companies. Additionally secure encryption ensures that the wireless transmission cannot be tampered with.
