WiMAX Based on the suite of protocols Air interface OFDMA defined under Mobility enhancements made under e include multi-path performance improvements for NLOS environments and support for scalable-channel-bandwidth operation MHz Licensed and unlicensed frequency bands e.g. 2.3, 2.5 and 3.5GHz Several profiles have been standardized for Capacity optimized systems (Dense networks) Coverage optimized systems (Rural areas) 2

Mobile WiMAX WiMax Forum has defined above specifications for mobile WiMAX End-to-End system solution that supports: Delay-sensitive (conversational or interactive) Delay-tolerant (non-real-time) applications Peak data-rates of up to 63Mbps DL and 28Mbps UL at 10MHz. Achieved by MIMO, sub-channelization, efficient MAC frames and AMC. Consider differentiated service flows for efficient resource allocation Provides security by implementing EAP, AES Supports SIM (Subscriber identity module) 3

mwimax Network Architecture 4

mwimax Network Architecture IEEE described MAC and PHY Can be classified into three categories: Data plane (data processing including header compression) Control plane (radio resource configuration, coordination, signaling) Management plane (external management and system configuration) 5

mwimax Network Architecture Mobile Wimax PHY: Channel Bandwidths: 1.25MHz-20MHz OFDM/OFDMA Supports both TDD AND FDD Frame size of 5msec (Frame duration is a tradeoff between delay/latency and overhead. Fractional Frequency Reuse (reuse-3 needed to avoid interference) AMC: randomization, FEC, bit interleaving, modulation (QPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM) Advanced MIMO Power Control 6

mwimax Network Architecture Mobile Wimax MAC to achieve: Support for mobility Power saving Quality of service Consists of three sublayers: Convergence sublayer MAC common part sublayer Security sublayer Define control and data plane functions 7

MAC functional procedures Related to radio resource control and mobility functions Network discovery, selection and entry Paging and idle mode management Radio resource management L2 Mobility management and handover protocols QoS, Scheduling and connection management Multicast and broadcast services Also» Security, sleep mode management, link control, multiplexing 8

MAC: Convergence Sublayer Classification and mapping of the upper layer SDUs into MAC connections Header compressions Protocol data unit formatting 9

MAC: Common MAC Sublayer Access control MAC PDU operation QoS provisioning, packet scheduling Call admission Control Bandwidth management HARQ Mobility support MBS AMC selection 10

MAC: Security Sublayer Secures over-the-air transmissions Protects data from deliberate changes Device authentication User authentication Data encryption Confidentiality and integrity Access control and key management 11

Beyond PHY and MAC Extend interoperability at higher layers All-IP and usage of open standards Unified technology framework Fixed-access Cellular deployment: macromobility, roaming Different usage models and device profiles Vertical design of access, connectivity and application services Support both operator-managed IP and open internet access 12

WiMAX Cellular Network Mobile Station / User equipment (fixed or mobile) Base station (Radio related functions) Access Network Core Network 13

WiMAX Cellular Network Access Service Network Gateway (QoS, Security, Mobility Management) Access Network Core Network 14

WiMAX Cellular Network Connectivity Service Network (provide IP connectivity services to WiMAX subscribers) May provide: IP address management AAA proxy and server QoS policy and admission control based on user profiles ASN-CSN tunneling support Billing and inter-operator roaming services Connectivity to Internet 15

WiMAX Cellular Network QoS categories 16

WiMAX Cellular Network Scheduler PDUs are transmitted based on priority and available radio resources 17

WiMAX Cellular Network Scheduling Fast Data Scheduler Scheduling for DL and UL Dynamic resource allocation QoS-Oriented Scheduling Frequency Selective Scheduling Mobility Management Power management (sleep and idle states while in connection) Handoff 18
