Inspired Innovation Test Methodology Journal Triple Play Testing with Spirent TestCenter November 2008
Triple Play Testing with Spirent TestCenter Objective The objective of this lab is to show you how to use Spirent TestCenter to test Triple Play using the DHCP, IGMP, SIP and HTTP emulation software packages. In addition, you will learn key features that can be applied to any test you configure in Spirent TestCenter. Overview This test stresses the performance of a device by introducing a wide range of traffic, packet sizes and protocols. The Device Under Test (DUT) is configured for Multicast and VLANs. Two Spirent TestCenter ports are connected to two ports on the DUT: one will serve as downstream port for the residential gateways and one will serve as the upstream core port. The ports on the DUT are both 100Mb Ethernet. Once all traffic is running, you will be able to view the statistics in the table results and create charts to see the performance as IGMP, SIP and HTTP all run at the same time. Setup 1
1. Launch Spirent TestCenter and reserve the required ports. 2. Select All Ports in the navigation window, unselect Append Location to Port Name and rename the ports Client and Server. 2
3. Select the Technology Selector button. 4. In the Technology Selector, enable HTTP and SIP under Application Layer and IGMP/MLD and DHCP under Access. Press OK once completed. 5. Select Client Hosts in the navigation window. Press the Add button. Two VLANs will be used to mimic a residential gateway. Three hosts will be configured on each VLAN; each host will perform a different task. 3
6. Make sure that only the Client port is selected and press Next. 4
7. These hosts will use DHCP, enable Access/Multicast and then enable DHCPv4. Press Next to continue. 5
8. Enable Number of VLAN Headers, the default value of 1 is okay. Press Next to continue. 6
9. Set the VLANs per port to 2 and configure the VLAN ID as required to work with your DUT s configuration. Two VLANs are required as each VLAN will act as a residential gateway. Press Next once completed. 7
10. Set the Hosts per VLAN to 3. Each host on the VLAN will either be configured as a Set Top Box (STB), a PC browsing the Internet and transmitting Layer 3 traffic or as a SIP client. Use the Host block mode drop down menu and select One host per block as each host will be uniquely named. Correctly configure the IPv4 gateway and then select the button next to step, as the Step per VLAN needs to be configured. 11. Configure the Step per VLAN to correctly work with your DUT s configuration and press OK. 8
12. No configuration changes are required, press Next to continue. 9
13. Verify the configuration of the Hosts. Three hosts per VLAN should be present, make sure the IPv4 gateway configuration is correct, too. If changes are required, use the Back button, else press Finish. 14. Rename each host STB 1, PC 1 and SIP 1 for the first VLAN. Repeat the naming scheme on the second VLAN, but change the number value to 2. 10
15. Next, select Server Hosts in the navigation window and press the Add button. We will now create end points for the traffic streams. 11
16. Make sure only the Server port is selected. 12
17. Make sure that Host type is set to Traffic only and press Next to continue. 13
18. The Number of VLAN Headers should already be enabled with a value of 1 from the previous iteration of the Host Wizard. Press Next to continue. 14
19. Change the VLANs per port back to a value of 1 and set the VLAN ID as required to work with your DUT s configuration. Press Next once completed. 15
20. Set the Hosts per VLAN to a value of 4. Four hosts are required due to needing two SIP end points. Also, again make sure Host block mode is set to One host per block. Next, configure the IPv4 address; the IPv4 gateway should automatically be configured. Press Next once complete. 16
21. Verify the configuration is correct and press Finish. If changes are required, use the Back button to make them. 22. Rename the Hosts to Video Stream, Layer 3/HTTP, SIP 1 and SIP 2. The Video Stream host will send traffic to a multicast group, which will then be joined by the Client side hosts. The Layer 3/HTTP host will receive both Layer 3 and HTTP traffic from the Client side hosts. While the SIP 1 and SIP 2 hosts will be the end points for the SIP calls from the Client side hosts. 17
23. Next, two multicast groups will be created. Each multicast group will act like a video channel being streamed to a STB. Select All Multicast Groups in the navigation window and press the Add button twice. 24. Two entries should appear. Configure the Start IP Address of each one and make sure they differ. 25. Next select Server Traffic Generator and then use the Add drop down menu and select Add Bound Stream Block. 18
26. Select only the Server port and press Next. 27. Select the Video Stream as the Source Host and select both multicast groups as the Destinations. Press Add once all are selected. 19
28. Make sure both pairs were added and press Next. 29. Change the Stream block name prefix to Multicast Video so it is easily identifiable in the results windows. Press Finished once completed as no further changes are required to the Stream Block. 20
30. Select Client Traffic Generator. Use the Add drop down menu to select Add Bound Stream Block. This step starts the configuration of stateless IP traffic, and the following steps will continue with the configuration till completion. 21
31. Make sure both ports are selected and press Next. 32. Select both PC hosts as the Source and Layer 3/HTTP on the Server port as the Destination. Next, under Orientation select Bidirectional. Press Add once completed. 22
33. Make sure two bidirectional pairs have been added and press Next. 23
34. Change the Stream block name prefix to Layer 3 for easy recognition in the results views. Press Finish once completed. 35. When prompted about overwriting the configuration, select No. 24
36. Select Client Hosts IGMP/MLD tab. 37. Enable the Activate checkbox for both STB hosts. 25
38. Once both STB hosts have been activated select STB 1 and then select the Edit Group Memberships button. 39. Select the Add button. 40. Select the first group and press OK. 26
41. Use the Select Hosts drop down menu and unselect STB 1 and select STB Again, press the Add button. 43. This time, select the second group and press OK. This assigns each Host to join a different multicast group. 27
44. Press Close once completed with the configuration. 45. Select Server Hosts HTTP. Locate the Layer 3/HTTP host and enable the Activate Server checkbox on this host. Do not worry about any further configuration that will be performed under the Client port. 28
46. Select Clients Hosts HTTP. For both PC hosts enable the Activate Client check box. 47. Select the Wizard button. This will run the Application Layer Wizard to set up HTTP Clients and Servers. 29
48. Make sure both ports are selected and press Next. 30
49. Select both Client PC hosts as the Source and the Layer 3/HTTP Server host as the destination. Press the Add button once complete. 31
50. Use the drop down menus and select the Default profile in the Client Profiles, Load Profiles and Server Profiles columns. For the Connect Server column, choose the Layer 3/HTTP Server (should be only option). 32
51. It is possible to create or change the profile by selecting Manage Profiles. 52. If you wish to edit a profile, select the profile line item and then press Edit. To create a new one, select Add. Once all changes have been made, press Close. 33
53. The chart shows the actual stepping that will be used during the test. It is easy to make changes to this using the Phase Editor. For example, if you wish to change the default delay of 30 seconds make sure the Label is set to Delay, locate the Steady Time and change the value accordingly. 54. All changes have been made, press OK. 34
55. Verify two pairs have been created and press Finish. 56. Select the SIP tab and then the Wizard button. This will run the Application Layer Wizard to set up SIP User Agents. 35
57. Again, make sure both ports are selected and press Next. 36
58. Select SIP 1 under the Client port as the Source and SIP 1 under the Server port as the Destination. Press Add once completed. 59. Select the SIP tab and then press OK as no configuration is required. 60. Repeat the previous two steps only using SIP 2 as the Source and Destination. 37
61. Verify two pairs have been added and press Finish. 62. Select Client Hosts DHCP. The Hosts using DHCP will have to acquire an IP Address before the test can proceed. 38
63. Select all the hosts and press the Bind DHCP Host button. Before continuing, verify all hosts received a valid IP Address as the State column will change to a value of Bound. 64. ARP queries must be sent. Select the Start ARP/ND button and make sure all ARPs resolve correctly before continuing. 65. Select Server Hosts HTTP. Before the HTTP Clients can connect and request pages, the HTTP server must be initialized on this port. 39
66. Select the Layer 3/HTTP Host and start the HTTP Server by selecting the Start HTTP Protocol button. 67. Now that the HTTP server is running, the HTTP clients need to be started. Select Clients Hosts HTTP. 68. Select both PC hosts and start each client by selecting the Start HTTP Protocol button. If the default HTTP Profile is used, a 30-second delay time is used. With this default delay, traffic associated with HTTP will not be seen transmitting for 30 seconds. 40
69. Next, we will start the multicast video stream. Select Server Traffic Generator. 41
70. Select the Multicast Video stream, right-click and select Start. 71. Verify the stream has successfully started.
