4 Data network fit for the future The daughter is watching her favourite show on TV while the son is playing his newest online game on his video game console. The father is participating in a telephone conference while administrating his HD films on the home server (NAS). The mother is researching the next holiday destination on the internet while listening to her favourite music. Computer, video game console, TV, stereo equipment and internet become more and more important in our everyday lives. Communication is a comprehensive topic in our interconnected world, and connects the areas of work and leisure, as well as entertainment and information. In addition, almost all of the communication and information applications are becoming digital and thus network-compatible. This increases the demands on the infrastructure of building technology. Triple play is the key word which connects IP telephony, IP TV and internet usage. Radio-controlled wireless and powerline solutions using the 230-V power network fail for a lot of applications, since neither the bandwidths are sufficient, nor the transmission routes stable enough. The plastic fibre-based DATALIGHT system is the ideal solution for triple play to run smoothly and without interferences: Whether in new-build or existing property, optical in-house networks make buildings and their owners fit for the future. 4 FRÄNKISCHE DATALIGHT

5 Data network fit for the future IP telephony / voice over IP provides the possibility of phoning over the internet or within the network with entirely new functionality and more ease. SAT>IP is the new standard of distributing satellite TV in a building. Instead of coaxial transmission lines, signals are distributed through the network no need for double installation of lines! Smart TV / IP TV allows watching TV over the internet. In addition to TV programmes, access to online video rental services is also provided, or data can be fetched from the network. Modern safety/security technology uses the network to transmit data and makes the house a safe and carefree environment for its inhabitants. Smart home concepts use all technical options to ideally adjust the house to the individual needs of those living in it. In the future, also smartphones and tablets will run applications requiring large data volumes. Decentralised wireless access points can be used to ensure stable data transfer. Home cloud The home cloud is the personal and secure data storage in your own house. 6 Planning principles Germany on the way to become a gigabit society The future gigabit society is an advanced information society, fully permeated by information and communication technology. The network infrastructures of the gigabit society which will develop until 2025 create the basis for this. They must allow the transport of the massively growing volumes of data and additionally provide intelligent features and services [ ]. Which system you choose depends in particular on what needs the residents have: To what extent do they already use IP TV, video streaming or even satellite TV over the network? How much data must be transported within the building, within the home cloud (NAS)? If you currently opt for the 100 Mbps DATALIGHT system, you will still remain flexible in the future. The data line already transmits data at 1 Gbps. If the demands placed on the data volume increase, only the switch and some access points will have to be exchanged. The backward compatibility allows components from both systems to be combined the right speed in the right place. HD 100 Mbps U-HD 1 Gbps The 100 Mbps system reliably covers all DSL connections. 7 Home network DATALIGHT offers the perfect infrastructure for all kinds of services and applications. Signals coming from outside are distributed over the entire home network be it television via satellite or cable, internet access through optical fibre or copper connection. DATALIGHT also forms the basis for integrating smart home concepts / KNX. 8 Installation example home network Particularly in home offices or studies, a lot of devices require network access. PC, printer, telephone and network-attached storage are reliably connected to the internet and the rest of the building via DATALIGHT. If too few connections have been planned or if existing systems are retrofitted, the fibre can be easily pulled through existing electrical conduits, or, if needed, routed in baseboards, under the floor or in corners, making the installation virtually invisible. Sophisticated applications in the home network such as streaming high-definition films on large screens or home cinema systems require wired connections to ensure high-quality transmission. 8 FRÄNKISCHE DATALIGHT

9 The switch forms the basis of the standard-compliant star-shaped cabling of the data infrastructure and makes sure that the full data rate is available at all access points. The backward compatibility allows 100 Mbps access points to be operated in combination with a 1 Gbps switch however, at a speed of 100 Mbps. Mobile gadgets such as smartphones or tablets can be integrated into the network via decentralised wireless access points. Unlike central wireless routers, these boast a measured-out radiation level that can be adjusted to the application and room size or, if required, switched off altogether. The best performance of the wireless signal is achieved if it is placed relatively high in the room and there are no obstacles between the transmitter and the receiver the area above the light switch suits best. 10 Installation example commercial building The Switch 12+4-port 1000 DATA- LIGHT is used for larger networks such as in hotels or office buildings. It features 12 optical connections and comprehensive management functions to adapt the network perfectly to the respective requirements. 12 Reference report Clever alternative for home network The DATALIGHT system is a clever alternative for network cabling in a newly-built semi-detached house north of Freiburg. While the decision regarding the issue of network cabling was pending, builders were searching for an alternative to a conventional data and power supply option that could also cut the costs of electrical installation. The technical designer has done some research and eventually found what he was looking for in the future-proof DATALIGHT system by FRÄNKISCHE. The FFKuS DATALIGHT all-in-one conduit makes it possible to furnish each and every room not only with power lines, but also with telephone, TV, network and internet. That is how DATALIGHT paves the way for FITH (Fibre In The Home) without extension cords and cable tangle. Another advantage is the flexibility of the system: Since one or several optical fibres have already been pre-installed in each room, the infrastructure can be adjusted to individual needs at any time. For instance, the wireless access point on the upper floor has been retrofitted, and an additional network connection for the IP-ready TV in the living room has been installed later. Now that the rooms have been fully equipped with FFKuS DATALIGHT, the residents enjoy boundless flexibility for all multi-media applications also in the future. 13 Technical equipment Each semi-detached house is equipped with a distribution board, accommodating both power and data lines of local providers. The fitter routed seven lines of the FFKuS DATALIGHT all-in-one conduit from each distribution board. This is, on the one hand, to ensure data supply in all rooms; on the other hand, the conduit also accommodates coaxial transmission lines for satellite TV, thus fulfilling a dual function. The connections are distributed in both housing units and are allocated to three points respectively: In the living and dining room, in the bedroom and children s rooms, as well as in the hallway on the upper floor. The FRÄNKISCHE multi-function conduit ensures neat and tidy installation without any tangled mess of cables. In areas where no network connection is currently needed let s say, in children s rooms the wiring is concealed behind a discreet cover. If wiring that has not been used so far becomes necessary, the fitter simply adds another access point, thus activating the data line. Its complement is the network switch in the distribution board that provides internet access through the router. Wireless supply is provided by one wireless access point on the basement floor and the upper floor respectively. This is how all devices used get automatically and easily connected and always have full coverage. Distributing wireless access points over both floors is an ideal solution: There is less radiation compared to installation with a conventional box. All the installed FFKuS DATALIGHT lines come together at the switch in the technical room. The router establishes the internet connection. The DATALIGHT system cannot be visually distinguished from other cabling types. All connections are installed in a discreet manner. FRÄNKISCHE DATALIGHT 13

14 Properties and advantages DATALIGHT system DATALIGHT provides the perfect solution for networks in single-family homes and multi-family dwellings, small businesses or hotels. The easy and flexible network system transmits data using optical fibres. An advantage is the quick installation: Neither screening nor clearance towards live parts is necessary. Whether new-build, renovation or retrofit of a network DATALIGHT is always the right choice! Installation with added value FFKuS DATALIGHT combines energy supply and data transmission in one conduit. This becomes possible thanks to a data line (polymer optical fibre) that is integrated in the electrical conduit. This enables a data distribution network to be set up in the entire building along with electrical installation. Insensitive to electromagnetic fields DATALIGHT uses light signals for data transmission and is completely radiation-free as well as insensitive to electromagnetic interferences. This also removes the need for extensive earthing, screening and electrical isolation. Special lightning and surge protection is not required either thanks to the insulating plastic fi b r e s. Jacketing Polymer fibre Reflective layer Characteristics of optical plastic fibres The cable made of full-duplex graded index fibres has a diameter of 2.2 mm only and is thus very thin, yet utterly durable and hard-wearing. The polymer fibre made of PMMA (Plexiglas) material has a thickness of 1 mm and a protective jacket capable of withstanding temperatures between - 40 C and + 85 C. The minimum bend radius of 20 mm allows installing loops in flush-mounted sockets or routing the fibres around edges without any transmission losses. 14 FRÄNKISCHE DATALIGHT

16 Installation FFKuS DATALIGHT installation instructions 1 POF cable Cut FFKuS DATALIGHT to the required length of the POF cable depending on the already installed connector socket/switch box. The length of the POF cable should be at least 30 cm. 4 POF cable The plastic jacket can now be easily separated from the pipe. POF = polymer optical fibre min. 30 cm 2 POF cable Cut the plastic jacket of FFKuS DATALIGHT at the lead-in of the connector socket/switch box using a stripping knife. Caution! 5 POF cable Use a pipe cutter to cut the conduit in a corrugation trough to the required length. Conduit and POF cable can now be inserted into the connector socket/ switch box. Do NOT cause damage to the POF cable while stripping the plastic jacket! 3 POF cable A longitudinal incision with the stripping knife towards the end of the conduit facilitates removal of the plastic jacket. 6 POF cable After installing the FFKuS DATALIGHT in the connector socket/switch box, complete the installation with plastering. NB 1. FFKuS DATALIGHT must be protected from mechanical damage! 2. For connecting the POF cable, see the data sheet of the terminal device! 3. 17 Access point connection Connect power supply to the access point. Earth conductor is not required. Use the cutter to shorten the fibre by a few mm. Remove the red protective cover from the opened lock terminal. Insert the fibre all the way and lock the terminal Fibre connection to the switch analogous to access point connection (see illustrations 2 and 3). Mount access point in a deep flush-mounted socket. The green LED indicates that it functions correctly. Installation of the switch Place the switch in a dry and ventilated place. Depending on the application, e.g., at the media field or in the 19-inch rack. Subsequently, establish the power supply through the adapter included. Network devices can be connected to the switch both with a RJ45 patch cable and via the POF. The top LED will be lit green if the connection has been established correctly. The device connected to the RJ45 ports can be set to automatic transmission mode. The switch uses the maximum transmission speed and full-duplex, if possible. FRÄNKISCHE DATALIGHT 17

18 Installation Retrofitting of a network Unsteady images in streaming films because the Wi-Fi signal from the router is too weak or constantly overloaded? DATALIGHT is the solution and makes your own home fit for cutting-edge communication and media technology also in retrofit installations. Thanks to the 2.2 mm thin data cable, LAN connections can be retrofitted easily and almost invisibly using the DATALIGHT media converter. Example 1: Retrofitting network connections directly via the router 0 1 Initial situation: The Wi-Fi signal is too weak to provide the complete apartment with sufficient data rate. Challenge: A wired network connection is required behind the TV. 2 Connect media converter to the router using a patch cable, connect the included power cable to a socket outlet. 3 Route the POF cable coming from the media converter to the desired destination either through existing electrical conduits or, should it be necessary, in baseboards, under the floor or in corners. Insert POF cable at the destination in another media converter. The power connection required can be established directly at the terminal device using the enclosed USB plug. Finally, connect the terminal with the media converter via patch cable. 18 FRÄNKISCHE DATALIGHT

19 Example 2: Retrofitting a network connection via an existing network socket 0 1 Initial situation: Wired network connection currently only behind the TV. An additional desk is to be set up in the room. Challenge: A wired network connection is required behind the desk. Connect converter to an existing LAN port using a patch cable. Voltage supply, e.g., via adjacent socket. 2 3 Route the POF cable coming from the media converter to the desired destination either through existing electrical conduits or, should it be necessary, in baseboards, under the floor or in corners. Insert POF cable in another media converter at the desk. The power required can be established directly at the terminal device using the enclosed USB power supply unit. Finally, connect the terminal with the media converter via patch cable. Example 3: Installing a small network 0 If wired network connections are required in two places in the house only, these can be established via two media converters that are connected directly to the router. The installation of a switch is therefore not necessary. For further steps, see examples 1 and 2. Example 4: Retrofitting network connection despite fully occupied switch 0 If all optical ports at the switch are already occupied, you can install another network connection using a converter. Connect the patch cable of the converter either to the router or to the switch. For further steps, see examples 1 and 2. FRÄNKISCHE DATALIGHT 19

20 Installation Measuring the DATALIGHT cabling Using the Power Meter DATALIGHT, you can check whether the DATALIGHT routes have been installed properly. For the interpretation of the measuring results, you must first measure a reference light source. The reference value forms the basis for the measurement of the installed led routes. It represents the light level l which is coupled into the fibre. The fibre attenuates this level all the more strongly the longer the installed route is, or additionally with any sharp bend, connection and damage. Measuring the reference light source 1. Switch on device with light source for at least 10 minutes. 2. Carefully cut reference route of 1 m Duplex Fibre DATALIGHT at both ends using a cutter or a suitable POF cutting tool. 3. Insert reference route at one end all the way into the lock terminal of the light source and lock. 4. Connect the illuminated end of the reference route to the Power Meter and read out the reference value (transfer directly to the software or take note or save in the measuring device). 5. Measurement without changing the reference light source. Tip: Turn the Duplex Fibre once at the reference light source and repeat the measurement with the second fibre in order to exclude connection errors and improve the accuracy of the reference value! Measuring the installed routes 1. Cleanly cut the installed route on both ends using a cutter. 2. Insert route at one end all the way into the lock terminal of the reference light source and lock. 3. Determine attenuation value at the illuminated end of the Power Meter and save. 4. Turn fibre in the terminal of the reference light source. 5. Determine attenuation value at the illuminated end of the Power Meter and save. If the attenuation value is within the permissible range, the route is able to transmit the desired data rate with all the DATALIGHT devices. Repeat measurement for all installed routes (do not change the reference light source!) The determined measured value can be stored in the Power Meter and afterwards transmitted to a PC or laptop via a USB interface. 21 FAQ Is it necessary to insulate the Duplex Fibre? No! When connecting to electronic components and when attaching two fibre ends to each other, the fibre must be used with a jacket. It protects the fibre from damage and prevents light emission. A clean cut prior to connection ensures very low attenuation. How can network-compatible terminal devices be connected with each other via DATALIGHT? The media converter included in the access point converts optical signals into electric signals. All network-compatible terminal devices can be connected via the RJ45 connections (Ethernet ports). How can DATALIGHT be checked? Prior to connecting the fibre to the access point and the switch: Use a pocket torch to light into one end of the fibre if light can be seen on the other end of the fibre, the fibre functions flawlessly. If a measurement protocol is required there are also level meters (Power Meter) which allow measuring the route. As soon as the fibre has been connected to the access point and the switch, green LEDs on the components indicate that they function correctly. Is DATALIGHT standardised? The POF technology is standardised analogously to glass fibre. DATALIGHT corresponds to category OP1 (step index POF) at ranges from 50 to 100 m. In addition, transmission protocols used have meanwhile been standardised according to IEEE Can a power line be installed parallel to an integrated data line in FFKuS DATALIGHT? Yes. The Duplex Fibre DATALIGHT is insensitive to electromagnetic fields. Due to this, power lines can also be installed in the electrical conduit parallel to the data line. Which DATALIGHT components can be combined with each other? All devices bearing the DATALIGHT logo are compatible with each other. This is also true for devices with different speed rates (100 Mbps or 1 Gbps). However, the maximum data rate decreases during operation of, e.g., a 100 Mbps access point with a 1 Gbps switch to the maximum data rate of the slowest device. Does analogue telephony / ISDN also work via DATALIGHT? No. DATALIGHT transmits Ethernet-based, digital applications only, just as is the case with Wi-Fi or powerline. Yet, VoIP applications are no problem, since these are based on the IP, i.e., on the Ethernet protocol. FRÄNKISCHE DATALIGHT 21
