DISCUSSION TOPICS CTA System Overview Communications Backbone Video Network Architecture Physical Video Infrastructure Mobile Security Network
CTA SYSTEM OVERVIEW Second largest public transportation system in U.S. City of Chicago and 40 surrounding suburbs Seven Rapid Transit Lines 144 Rail Stations 1200 Rail Cars 2300 buses
COMMUNICATIONS BACKBONE SONET OC-192 (10 Gbps) core fiber optic ring (8 nodes) SONET OC-48 (2.5 Gbps) sub-tended fiber optic rings along each rail line (150 nodes) Dual host nodes on core ring for each subtended ring Gigabit Ethernet network available at all nodes on IP packet ring over SONET OC-3 to DS-1 DACS at each core node
COMMUNICATIONS BACKBONE PURPLE LINE YELLOW LINE 567 W Lake Clark / Lake BLUE O HARE BROWN LINE RED LINE 120 N Racine Paulina CENTRAL CORE NETWORK OC-192 State / Lake Roosevelt / Wabash Dearborn / Jackson Roosevelt / State GREEN LAKE BLUE FOREST PARK PINK - CERMAK CORE Core Network: OC-192 SONET Ring 10Gbps vs 155Mbps existing Redundant connections ORANGE - MIDWAY RED 95 th DAN RYAN GREEN LINE Rail Network: OC-48 SONET rings to all stations 2.5 Gbps Redundant connections to core
COMMUNICATION BACKBONE
COMMUNICATION BACKBONE
FIXED VIDEO NETWORK First major deployment of 141 networked cameras in 2005 at 13 rail stations Recent construction included 900 cameras in 22 subway stations and along 24 miles of subway tubes Additional construction included 160 cameras at 9 rail stations Currently have 1200 cameras Estimated cameras ultimately system-wide Existing bus fleet has 5-7 cameras per bus with DVR, estimated at 10,000+ cameras
DESIGN CHALLENGES Fixed vs. PTZ debate DVR frame rate vs. resolution vs. storage capacity Common camera for well-lit station areas as well as dark subway tubes Eliminate single points of failure
VIDEO NETWORK ARCHITECTURE Video network consists of two parallel subnetworks: video recording network and video surveillance network Recording network is based on Pelco DX8100 DVR s at each rail station Nominal local recording archive target is 7 days Select video is backed up to terabyte servers for longer term storage
VIDEO NETWORK ARCHITECTURE Surveillance video network is based on MPEG-4 digital video encoders by Teleste All video is available at any fiber optic node via IP packet ring over SONET CCTV cameras between station nodes are encoded at the camera site and daisy-chained over common fiber strands to adjacent SONET nodes Dual nodes allow video streams onto network in the event a primary host node fails
VIDEO NETWORK ARCHITECTURE
VIDEO NETWORK ARCHITECTURE
PHYSICAL VIDEO INFRASTRUCTURE All cameras are color, analog dome cameras Video distribution at stations is via copper Category-6 unshielded twisted pair cabling Allows video, power, and control signals to be carried over a single cable Eliminated second conduit for power Introduced benefit of backup power for CCTV system from central power service in the event of power outage
PHYSICAL VIDEO INFRASTRUCTURE Each station camera is fed to a 4x1 video distribution amplifier First output is for the DVR feed, the second output feeds the MPEG-4 encoder, the third output is for maintenance, and the fourth is reserved for intelligent video detection Video monitors are installed in the station to display security video to the public A customer assistance button trigger will display the camera nearest the CA button Future implementation will replace CA button with one button phone to dial the CA kiosk and the Control Center for two-way audio and visual verification
PHYSICAL VIDEO INFRASTRUCTURE Cameras at stations are located to view strategic areas such as: Fare Collection Arrays Elevators Stairs/Escalators Platform Edge Ticket Vending Machines Passenger Benches/Windbreaks/Gathering Areas Bus Loading Areas
PHYSICAL VIDEO INFRASTRUCTURE Cameras along the right-of-way in the subway are located to be able to track intruders throughout the subway: Emergency Exits Platform Ends/Tube Entry Cross Passages River Crossings Vent Shafts/Fans Splice Chambers Track Interlockings Grade Crossings (above ground)

WIRELESS VIDEO NETWORK CTA Communications is continually expanding the fiber optic backbone that serves all rail lines. With the completion of the Brown Line, fiber connectivity will be available at all rail stations, terminals, and shops. The fiber optic backbone has been designed to accommodate high bandwidth applications. The largest application supported on the backbone is security video cameras. The rail system will have nearly 3000 cameras on the backbone.
WIRELESS VIDEO NETWORK However, buses have over 12,000 security cameras! None of these cameras are accessible for viewing. Expanding the fixed fiber optic communications backbone with a wireless component could tap into some or all of these cameras. Using a Homeland Security Grant, CTA initiated a pilot project to test the technology and the feasibility of high speed wireless communications to buses and other mobile vehicles.
WIRELESS VIDEO NETWORK There were four simple goals: 1. Allow a trailing transit police vehicle to view wireless live streaming video from a bus while in motion. 2. Allow wireless live streaming video from the bus to be transmitted to the Control Center. 3. Allow a transit police or other first responder vehicle to view wireless live streaming video from a fixed facility or rail station 4. Allow CTA s Command Bus to send and receive wireless live streaming video and other high speed data to/from the CTA network to operate as a fully functional Mobile Control Center.
