2 I.- The intelligent buses (e-bus) from the Madrid Municipal Transport Company Madrid s Municipal Transport Company S.A. (La Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid, S.A., also known as EMT) is the city s transport operator in Madrid. The EMT operates some 200 routes with their 2200 buses in and around the city. EMT: Headquarters The EMT buses are equipped with a computer which manages the intelligent applications integrated in the vehicle (location, fares, energy management, bidirectional audio, information panels, etc) either in local mode through the driver s console or remotely, through the S.A.E. Control Center. 1 The on-board computer is permanently connected to the Control Centers through a municipal trunking radio network operated by the EMT. II.- The new target. Broadband in buses for Video surveillance With the aim of increasing security for their fleet, the EMT have decided to launch a closed IP camera circuit in their buses, managed and operated from an Alarm Reception Center (ARC). To guarantee both access to the images from the on-board cameras from the ARC and quality, each bus requires a permanent broadband connection. This need cannot be met through the current trunking network. From the wide range of proposed broadband wireless technologies, the EMT opted for 3G technology as this has a much better coverage of the city than alternative options and their network infrastructure is both stable and established. The high speed of the mobile access technologies (offering maximum speeds of 7 Mbps and 2 Mbps in 1 S.A.E. ( Sistema de Ayuda a la Explotación ): This is a system launched, operated and maintained by the EMT which offers real time information on the location of buses (managing the fleet) and simplifying a connection from the Control Centers to the vehicles for maintenance and auditory operations or to remotely help the driver (bidirectional audio). 3 upstream and downstream links respectively with current 3G technology) and their progress to higher speeds not only guarantees appropriate quality for the video surveillance service but also simplifies migration to the new on-board broadband services. III.- The Project: Video surveillance and access to Internet The VEA ( Video vigilancia Embarcada en Autobuses On-board Bus Video surveillance ) project s main objective is to provide the EMT bus fleet with a video surveillance system fully integrated with the intelligent services on board the buses. The project also contemplates sharing the 3G access for Internet browsing from passenger WiFi terminals. The project encompasses all video surveillance elements: Closed circuit cameras and local recording in the EMT bus fleet together with a local storing system for the recorded images. Alarms and Video surveillance reception center. The operators can access the bus cameras in real time to check the images. This center is also integrates diverse EMT applications. On-board broadband communications platform delivering 3G, WiFi and Ethernet connections. 3G communications service integrated in the EMT corporate network and supplied by Telefónica. The EMT launched their open competition for tenders for the design, deployment and management of the system in April The project was awarded to the joint venture composed of the following entities: Company Group Specialist Area ETRA ACS Telecom Engineering. 4 allowed them to adapt their devices to suit this particular scenario in record time, fully adjusting to this very ambitious project deployment plan. IV.- Teldat Technology for bus communications The Teldat H1-Automotive evolved from the 3G/WiFi router model for companies (Teldat H1/HSUPA) for a mechanical and electric characteristics platform adapted to be installed in any type of bus in the EMT fleet. Industrial range platform, adapted for Transport Ruggedized chassis (anodized aluminum case) with anti-shock and anti-vibration protection and high temperature dissipation (refrigeration by conduction). Industrial range of electronic components. Optimized electric consumption (maximum 8.5 W) maintains the battery autonomy. Versatile anchoring system permitting the router to be placed in any position depending on the characteristics of each vehicle. Teldat H1-Automotive Router The 4-port Ethernet switch integrated in the router expand a LAN network on board. Eliminating the need of any external Ethernet switch, the router interconnects two IP-CCTV cameras covering the bus passenger area together with the on-board computer on which the captured video is locally stored. An spare Ethernet port in the router is kept for future use. Scalable and manageable LAN 4 port professional range integrated Ethernet switch serves the Ethernet devices on board (IP cameras, process central unit, local server for recordings etc.) The router also integrates a WiFi interface with a dual purpose: Access to the Internet when the bus is on route. 5 Download the video stored in the on-board computer. When the bus completes its route, the router connects to the bus depot WiFi network both to transfer the local recordings to the EMT s Central Server and to provide connectivity for remote maintenance operations on the bus applications. Integrated WiFi Service Embedded Wireless-LAN interface with IEEE i security and configurable operation mode (Access Point / Client). The router remains permanent connected to the EMT corporate VPN (to the ARC and the Control Centers) and to Internet through Telefónica s mobile access service. Maximum availability in mobile communications is guaranteed even when the bus is circling through non-3g coverage areas as the router automatically switches to a 2.5G access. By enabling the Teldat s proactive WWAN supervision the router can detect and report situations where mobile communications are excessively degraded. Network operators can audit in real time the fleet WWAN communications to a high level of accuracy favoring an efficient troubleshooting in order to keep the optimum performance of on-board applications at all times. Outstanding 3G Communications reliability Automatic fallback to EDGE/GPRS guarantees vehicle connectivity when moving through non-3g areas. Dual external RF antenna for diversity maximizes the coverable and the 3G connection stability. Teldat s advanced supervision: detects reports and correct radio access faults as well as temporary degradation in 3G communications, such as unexpected increase in the IP streaming error rate, link latency and jitter. Radio access parameters constantly displayed (signal strength, service cells, etc). Instantaneous value and temporary evolution checks. 3G backup option: dual SIM supported. Switch to an alternative 3G network based on the most complete criteria (detach in communications, time schedules, 3G technology unavailable, etc). 6 The tunnel based IP transmission implemented in the buses 3G services yields a fully transparent IP connectivity between the on-board LAN networks and the EMT s central applications on its corporate VPN. Security mechanisms, complying with the EMT strict security policy, have been enabled in the router to restrict the access to the bus applications by unauthorized users. The remote and centralized management of the Teldat H1-Automotive routers on board the buses is carried out from EMT s Communication Management Station. V.- First phase of the project successfully launched The technical validation phase of the VEA system began in the last quarter of 2008 when a pilot bus with Teldat s 3G/WiFi technology was deployed on-board. The results were very satisfactory with the solution being validated in December In April of this year, the Teldat H1-Automotive router was integrated into three EMT routes (some 30 buses). 7 The bus communications platform based the Teldat H1-Automotive router With the very encouraging results achieved in communications with the 30 buses, EMT began to gradually roll out the solution in all the bus fleet. Teldat will be continuing the close collaboration with the joint venture they ve enjoyed to date to satisfy EMT s ambitious plans. Some 600 buses will be equipped with the VEA system by the end of 2009, and the deployment phase in all the fleet will be completed by the end of Teldat H1-Automotive Case Study on Madrid public transport.
