1 WiFi Setup Guide Connect WiFi units to Excite, RoadStar, or StreetSmart Signs that use Ooh!Media software Overview Two wireless units come with each WiFi kit. The unit labeled Bridge (receiver) will be located and connected to the sign. The second unit, labeled Access Point (transmitter), will be located and connected to the network/computer. If multiple Master signs are to be connected, a point to multi-point WiFi network is used and additional Bridge units are required for each additional Master sign location. WiFi wireless units are labeled with the following IP addresses (configured at the factory): Access Point (transmitter) Bridge (receiver) Each additional Bridge - Starts at and increments by 1 (for example , ). These instructions walk you through setting up the Access Point and Bridge, conducting a site survey, and sending a test message. Instructions for connecting the WiFi units to AlphaEclipse Excite, RoadStar, and StreetSmart signs are included. Table of contents: WiFi Setup Diagram Step 1: Configure the Access Point Step 2: Configure the Bridge Step 3: Connect the Bridge to the sign Step 4: Install additional Bridge units Step 5: Conduct a site survey Step 6: Install Ooh!Media Before you start If you need assistance during the installation, contact Adaptive s Technical Support team at (414) ext Identify where the Access Point will be located and what computer / network it will be connected to. You will need a computer with a web browser and an Ethernet (or Ethernet crossover) cable, and/or access to the network. Identify the approximate location at the sign where the Bridge will be installed so you can assess the mounting requirements. DO NOT mount the Bridge to the sign. Consider possible sources of interference such as 2.4 GHz cordless phones, improperly shielded microwave ovens, wireless equipment that other companies may have installed in the area. Read through these instructions before installing and configuring the Access Point and Bridge. When you install Ooh!Media, you will need the following information to setup the sign: Sign Information IP address: Subnet Mask: Default Gateway: Note: Although the instructions in the Wireless Bridge / Access Point User s Manual state to mount the units first, we recommend configuring them first and then using Site Survey mode to determine the exact mounting location. Always disconnect power to the unit prior to servicing. Note: It is recommended to use two or three people and provide a way for them to communicate while conducting the site survey. 1. Move the Bridge(s) out to the sign location and connect the Ethernet cable from the sign. 2. Position the Access Point in the selected mounting location facing the direction of the sign. 3. At the computer open a web browser and type the Access Point s IP address ( unless it was changed) in the Address bar. 4. At the login prompt, type admin for the Username and admin for the Password and click OK. 5. In the left menu area click Wireless and then click Site Survey. Signal strength MAC Address 6. Click the Refresh button. 7. To identify your Access Point, look for the Access Point s MAC Address (see Log your MAC Address for reference later during the Site Survey. on page 3) in the BSSID column. 8. Look at the value in the Signal column. This represents the signal strength on a scale of where 100 is the strongest signal strength. Make sure the front of the Bridge(s) is facing toward the Access Point. Adjust the position of the Bridge until you receive the strongest signal strength. 9. Mount the Bridge(s) and Access Point at the location you receive the strongest signal. Remember to create a Service Loop see page 2 for details. Part Number rev. F 13
14 WiFi Setup Guide Step 6: Install Ooh!Media 1. Insert the Ooh!Media CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the installation does not start automatically, do the following: Select Start > Run. Type D:\amplayer (use the correct letter for your CD-ROM drive if not D) and click OK. 2. On the first screen, click the Install Ooh!Media button and follow the instructions. 3. In the Network Setup window, set the IP address information. You will need most of this from your network administrator. Select Native. Only check the Expert Mode box if instructed by your network administrator, Internet service provider, or Adaptive Micro Systems to set advanced options such as the primary DNS. 4. Click Set. If the Login prompt appears, enter your password, click OK and then click Close in the Network Setup window. By default, the password is set to ooh. 14 Part Number rev. F

Time in seconds Extend the message long enough for you to go to the sign and look at it. 5. Click the disk icon to save the message. 6. Name the message and click Save. 7. Click the send message icon to send the message to the sign. 8. Verify the message appears on the sign. Part Number rev. F 15
16 WiFi Setup Guide Troubleshooting If nothing appears on the sign when you send messages from Ooh!Media, the first step is to verify there is communication with the sign. You can do this by pinging the sign. Ping is a tool used on computer networks to test whether devices are reachable. The goal of pinging a device is to get a reply. If there is no reply, the ping request times out meaning the device is unreachable. See To ping the sign, Bridge, or Access Point on page 17 for instructions. If you can successfully ping the sign, then the WiFi devices are communicating properly. Basic troubleshooting sequence: Ping the sign Is there a reply? Yes Contact Technical Support. No Ping the Access Point Is there a reply? Yes No There may be a problem with the Access Point s IP address, the wireless unit itself, or the internal network. Refer to the manual for the WiFi device, contact your network technician, or contact Technical Support. Ping the Bridge Is there a reply? No There may be a problem with the Bridge's IP address or the cabling. See your network technician or contact Technical Support. Yes Try resending the message. If the problem continues, contact Technical Support. 16 Part Number rev. F
17 Step 7: Send a test message To ping the sign, Bridge, or Access Point 1. The ping command is performed from within the Windows command prompt window (also referred to as the DOS window). To open the command prompt, click the Start button and select Run. A command window similar to the following appears. 2. Type ping followed by the IP address of the unit as in the following example. ping A successful ping looks similar to the following: An unsuccessful ping looks similar to the following: Part Number rev. 18 WiFi Setup Guide Changing the IP address for an Access Point or Bridge If your network configuration requires the Access Point unit and Bridge unit to have different IP addresses, you can do so at any time by following these instructions. To change the IP address for an Access Point or Bridge 1. Make sure your computer is using an IP address within the X range. Change the IP address on the computer on page 3 for instructions. 2. At the computer, open a web browser and type the IP address of the unit and press the ENTER key. For a Bridge type or the IP address labeled on the Bridge. For a Access Point type At the login prompt, type admin for the Username and admin for the Password and click OK. 4. In the left menu area, click TCP/IP Settings and then click LAN Interface. 5. Click in the IP address field and type in the IP address to use for the unit. 6. Click Apply Changes. 7. Click OK. 18 Part Number rev. F
