2 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Read all of these instructions before operating and save instructions for later use Read Instructions All the safety and operating instructions should be read before the appliance is operated. Retain Instructions The safety and operating instructions should be retained for future reference. Heed Warnings All warnings on the appliance and in the instructions should be adhered to. Follow Instructions All operating and use instructions should be followed. Water and Moisture The appliance should not be used near water for example, near a bathtub, washbowl, kitchen sink, laundry tub, in a wet basement or near a swimming pool. Carts and Stands The appliance should be used only with a cart or stand that is recommended by the manufacturer. An appliance and cart combination should be moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven surfaces may cause the appliance and cart combination to overturn. Wall or Ceiling Mounting The appliance should be mounted to a wall or ceiling only as recommended by the manufacturer. Ventilation The appliance should be situated so that its location or position does not interfere with its proper ventilation. For example, the appliance should not be situated on a bed, sofa, rug, or similar surface that may block the ventilation openings; or, placed in a built-in installation, such as a bookcase or cabinet that may impede the flow of air through the ventilation openings. Heat The appliance should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other appliances (including amplifiers) that produce heat. 10. Power Sources The appliance should be connected to a power supply only of the type described in the operating instructions or as marked on the appliance. 11. Grounding or Polarization Precautions should be taken so that the grounding or polarization means of an appliance is not defeated. 12. Power-Cord Protection Power-supply cords should be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and at the point where they exit from the appliance. 13. Cleaning The appliance should be cleaned only as recommended by the manufacturer. 14. Power Lines An outdoor antenna should be located away from the power lines. 15. Nonuse Periods The power cord of the appliance should be unplugged from the outlet when left unused for a long period of time. 16. Object and Liquid Entry Care should be taken so that objects do not fall and liquids are not spilled into the enclosure through openings. 17. Damage Requiring Service The appliance should be serviced by qualified service personnel when: 18. A. The power-supply cord or the plug has been damage; or B. Objects have fallen, or liquid has spilled into the appliance; or C. The appliance has been exposed to rain; or D. The appliance does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a marked change in performance; or E. The appliance has been dropped or the enclosure damaged. Servicing The user should not attempt to service the appliance beyond that described in the operating instructions. All other servicing should be referred to qualified service personnel. 2

5 NEXUS AUDIO SYSTEMS C-612 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS INTRODUCTION Welcome to Nexus Audio Systems and congratulations on your purchase of the C-612 Multi-Zone Controller. The C-612 supports six independently operated zones and infrared (IR) control of four external line level audio source components. Two Audio Input Module Option Bays provide additional source input capability for devices such as ipods and XM Tuners. The C-612 also features a built-in AM/FM Tuner with twenty Channel Presets. Each zone features a solid 50 Watts per channel stereo amplifier for clean, unfatigueing listening. Each of the routed source IR outputs can be set for 38 KHz or 56 KHz output for optimum source control. The unit includes a RS-232 Port that allows the C-612 to be controlled with a touch-screen or easily integrated with other home automation control systems. The Nexus C-612 provides a mute function that can integrate with a doorbell or telephone system to ensure no important call or visitor is ever missed, and audio paging for whole-house voice communication. The system is expandable to 12 zones using two C-612 Controllers. Source power management is referenced to system status with all sources being automatically turned on when the first zone is activated and turned off when the last zone turns off. Programming power management takes only seconds and requires no additional connections or components. The C-612 Keypads provide simple, intuitive control of zone power, source selection, source control, volume, treble and bass and tuner functions. The blue backlit high-resolution keypad LCD indicates zone status, source selection, volume as well as tuner frequency and preset. Zone names, source names and tuner preset names are all configurable in the C-612 Setup and are all displayed on the Keypad LCD. The C-612 features six programmable buttons that can be used for basic device control such as chapter skip, stop or pause for transport devices and tuner up/down or preset up/down for tuners. The keypad features a built-in infrared receiver that can be used with the included R-3 Remote Control or any properly programmed IR remote for additional flexibility and armchair control. The R-3 includes an additional 23 buttons that are programmable by source to include vital source control commands. The Zone Sharing feature allows up to three zones to be linked together for ease of use in common areas that would typically have the same source selected and playing. Zone Sharing includes two modes. One links the zones for power, source and volume, the other has the same source selected in all three zones, but each zone retains independent power and volume control. FM Antenna One, female F type terminal for connecting the included FM antenna. AM Antenna One, two wire spring clip allows connection of an AM Loop Antenna. Main Power Switch Turns AC power to the C-612 Controller ON/OFF. AC Fuse Replaceable T8A H250V fuse. Only use exact replacement to avoid damage to the unit or the possibility of fire. 14. AC Power Standard IEC 3-conductor AC line cord receptacle. 15. RS-232 One, DB9 female connector provides two-way RS-232 communication with touch screen controllers, and home automation systems. Pinout: Pin 2 = Tx; Pin 3 = Rx; Pin 5 = Ground. 16. Nexlink One, RJ11 jack connects to the Nexlink jack on a second C-612 for system expansion to twelve zones. 17. USB Flash Drive One, USB 2.0 Port connects to a USB flash drive for installing firmware updates. 18. Audio Inputs Four, stereo pair RCA jacks connect to the left & right line level audio outputs of up to four external source components. Pinout: Tip=Sig; Sleeve=Gnd. 19. Line Level Out (Fixed) One, stereo pair RCA jacks connect to the left & right line level audio inputs on an external audio amplifier or receiver when volume will be controlled with in-wall volume controls or the volume control on the receiver. Line Level Out (Variable) One, stereo pair RCA jacks connect to the left & right line level audio inputs on an external audio amplifier that does not have a volume control or when it is desirable to adjust volume on an external amp or receiver from the C-612 Keypad or R-3 Remote Control in Zone 1. Menu Press this button to activate the Keypad Menu. With Tuner selected, Preset Save, Erase Current Preset, Name Current Preset, Tone Controls, Setup Group, and LCD Contrast are accessible. For external sources, only the Tone Controls, Setup Group, and LCD Contrast are accessible. The Menu button is not programmable for IR commands. 9

10 Stop/Pause Button ( /II) In Normal Mode, with the Tuner selected, press to toggle between AM and FM Bands. For external components, (CD, ipod, etc) this button is IR programmable for functions such as stop and pause. IR commands must be programmed by source. In the Keypad Menu, in Save Preset, press this button to cancel save, press to exit any Keypad Menu Mode and return to Normal Mode. Select Button (*) In Normal Mode, with Tuner selected and a Preset channel tuned, press and hold to access Erase Preset. With Tuner selected and a non-preset channel tuned, press and hold to access Save Preset. For external sources, (CD, ipod, etc) this button is IR programmable for functions such as play. IR commands must be programmed by source. In the Keypad Menu, press to select the highlighted menu item. In Save Preset, press to save, in Erase Preset press for Yes/No, in Name Preset, press to enter the name. No function for Tone Controls or Contrast. Reverse Button ( ) In Normal Mode with the internal Tuner selected, press this button to advance to the next lower stored Preset. For external sources, (CD, ipod, etc) this button is IR programmable for functions such as previous track or previous disc. IR commands must be programmed by source. In the Keypad Menu, press to select Tuner Preset memory location down, in Erase Preset select Yes/No, in Name Preset move the cursor to the left, in Tone Controls decrease treble/bass and in Contrast, decrease Contrast. 29. Up/Down Buttons ( ) In Normal Mode with the internal Tuner selected, press these buttons to increase/decrease frequency by one increment. Press and hold for frequency scan. For external sources, (CD, ipod, etc) these buttons are IR programmable for functions such as disc skip up/down. IR commands must be programmed by source. In Keypad Menu Mode, with the Menu on-screen, press to navigate up/down in the menu. In Tone Controls press to select Treble or Bass. 30. Controller Port One, RJ45 jack connects to the appropriate Zone Input on the C-612 Controller Rear Panel via CAT5 cable terminated with RJ45 connectors. The cable CAT5 should be configured in a pass-through (pin to pin) configuration, utilizing the TIA568A Standard pin-out. 10

System functions such as ON/OFF, Volume, and Source select are pre-programmed at the factory. Source functions such as track, disc, play, scan, numeric and navigation function commands must be programmed into the C-612 Controller. See section: Programming IR Commands for additional information. The R-3 commands can be taught to other programmable controllers, but the source function commands must still be programmed into the C-612 Controller. NOTE 2: Any Source IR commands programmed into the C-612 Controller for the Keypads will respond to same buttons when pressed on the R-3 and do not need to be programmed twice. See Section: Button Mapping for additional information. 32. Input Select Buttons In Normal Mode, press these buttons to select the inputs for external sources connected to the C-612. Buttons 1-4 will select Rear Panel Inputs 1-4. Buttons 5-6 will select the Audio Input Modules connected to Option Bays on the C-612 Rear Panel. In IR learning Mode, these buttons will select the source being programmed. 33. Tuner Button In Normal Mode, press this button to select the C-612 internal Tuner. 34. Scroll Buttons Same functionality as the Up/Down Buttons ( ) on the keypad. In Normal Mode with the internal Tuner selected, press these buttons to increase/decrease frequency by one increment. For external sources, (CD, ipod, etc) these buttons are IR programmable for functions such as disc skip up/down. IR commands must be programmed by source. In Keypad Menu Mode, with the Menu on-screen, press to navigate up/down in the menu. In Tone Controls press to select Treble or Bass. 35. Bank A-B, Direct These keys have no functionality at this time, but may be used for future product releases. 11

12 36. IR Programmable Buttons In Normal Mode, when programmed with IR commands, these buttons can be used for remote control of the connected external sources. The Source IR commands are taught to the C-612 Controller and associated with the button locations by source. See section: Programming IR Commands for additional information. 37. PRG (Program) With the R-3 approximately 3-4 inches from the C-612 IR Learning Eye, press and hold this button until the Main Menu appears in the C-612 Front Panel Display. 38. Exit In Program Mode, press this button to exit program modes to return to the Main Menu. In Main Menu, press to return to Normal Mode. 39. Volume UP/DOWN Buttons Press to adjust volume UP/DOWN by zone. Same functionality as keypad Volume Up/Down buttons. No programming required. 40. Cursor Buttons (Identical to keypad Cursor Button functionality.) Forward Button ( ) In Normal Mode, with the internal Tuner selected, press this button to advance to the next higher stored Preset. For external sources, (CD, ipod, etc) this button is IR programmable for functions such as track skip forward or next disc. IR commands must be programmed by source. In the Keypad Menu, in Save Preset, press to select Tuner Preset memory location up, in Erase Preset select press for Yes/No, in Name Preset move the cursor to the right, in Tone Controls increase treble/bass and in Contrast increase contrast. Zone ON/OFF Button (Identical to keypad ON/OFF Button functionality.) Press to toggle zone ON/ OFF. Press and Hold to turn all zones OFF. No programming required. 42. Lens Point this end of the R-3 toward the C-612 Controller or Keypad for programming or zone control. IR LEDs behind the lens output infrared pulses (rapid flashes of invisible light) that must be direct line-of-sight to the Controller or keypad for them to see the R-3 IR commands. 12

14 DESIGNING AND INSTALLING A C-612 SYSTEM System Design It is always good to get as much information from the client/user/homeowner as possible when designing a multi-source, multi-zone system. What sources are they going to use? How many zones will be included in the system? Some zones may only require speakers for background music, while other zones may include a TV or video display for movies, sports and news. It s all part of the same system and planning ahead will insure that the system does what the user requires or asks for later. Head End Considerations When planning a whole-house system, for either new or existing construction, always try to find the most convenient location for the system components. Try to find a central location to pull the wire runs to with adequate space for the components and room to work on them. Certainly not the least important consideration should be convenience for the user. Remember: once the system is installed, the user is still going to need to load discs and dock/undock the ipod easy access is essential. For service or upgrading components, an equipment closet with rear access to the components is ideal but not always possible. Consider a pull-out rack mount system if rear access is not possible. Leave plenty of extra wire to be able to easily remove components should they need service or replacing. Zone Considerations Think the system through in terms of how the system will be used. What is the layout of each room? Where will the speakers go? Where will the keypads go? Are there going to be any other system components in the remote zones such as TV s or video displays? Be sure to pull all required cabling and observe all local building and electrical codes. INSTALLATION Controller Location The C-612 should be located at the main termination of all wire and cable runs. The source components (Tuner, CD, DVD, SAT, Music Server, etc) should also be installed at this location. The C-612 and source components can be placed on shelves in a wall unit in a media room, or rack mounted in a standard 19 rack mount system. Always provide convenient access for loading CDs and DVDs. Easy access for service should also be a consideration. Ventilation The C-612 must be placed in a location that allows adequate airflow. Leave at least two inches above and below the unit to allow air to flow freely through the vent holes on the top, bottom and sides. Blocking the vent holes can inhibit airflow and possibly damage the unit. Removing the feet a placing the unit on a shelf or another component will inhibit airflow and is not recommended. Additionally, care should be taken to leave plenty of extra room for wires and cables. Extra wire cramped in around the unit can block side vents and inhibit proper airflow. 14

15 Rack Mounting Figure 7. C-612 Rack Ears Rack Ears (Nexus Part #RK 3.5) are available as an accessory item that can be ordered from Nexus for rack mounting the C-612. The Ears mount behind the C-612 Front Panel as shown in Figure 7. The Ears, when secured to the rack, have the same height as other rack panels and allow use of Middle Atlantic Trim Strips for a clean finish. To attach Rack Ears: 1. Align Rack Ears to the Chassis Screw Holes in the sides of the C-612. Secure with Rack Ears Chassis Screws included with Rack Ears. 2. Secure to rack using appropriate rack mount hardware. NOTE: When rack mounting the C-612 Controller and other system components, it is recommended that one, one rack space vent panel be used above and below the C-612 Controller to provide adequate airflow for cooling. Keypad Location & Mounting The C-612 Keypads should never be mounted in the same J-box with AC house wiring or any other high voltage device such as a light switch. Avoid mounting the keypads in areas with high moisture such as around sinks, bathtubs, showers or outdoor locations that will be exposed to rain or high humidity. Care should also be taken to avoid mounting the keypads in locations that will be exposed to direct sunlight. Sunlight can interfere with the IR sensors on the keypads and interfere with system performance. 15

16 WIRING One of the most important aspects of system design and installation is the wiring infrastructure. When planning the wiring infrastructure, always pull extra wire. In new construction, wires can be damaged during construction, so it is a good idea to use wire with additional conductors in case a nail or staple gets run through a wire. Additionally, even though the system has been designed and contracted based on extensive interviews with the homeowner, things change. The homeowner may decide to add music, video and control to additional rooms long after the walls have been sealed up. In new construction, always pull wire to every room that could ever possibly be added to the system, so when the homeowner decides to add a room, the wire is already in place. Pull speaker and control wires for audio and control as well as coax or other appropriate cable (HDMI over CAT5, etc), for video distribution, even though the C-612 does not switch video and the system will only initially be used for audio sources. Pull each wire or cable to an appropriate location for keypads, speakers and video displays. Terminate with appropriate wall plates or keep a map detailing exactly where the wire runs are terminated in the walls. Always label the wire runs by room and device to assist in installation and troubleshooting. Figure 8. Terminate with RJ45 plugs in a pass-through (pin to pin) configuration using the TIA568A Standard pin-out. 17 Speakers Pull four conductor wire in home-runs directly from each speaker location to the C-612 Controller location. WIRE GAUGE: 16AWG stranded up to 75 ; 14AWG stranded up to 100. Non-shielded preferred. NOTE: MAX LOAD: 4 ohms per zone. Do not load more than one pair of 4 ohm speakers per zone. This can cause the unit to go into protection and may possibly blow fuses. Video (Option) Though the C-612 does not switch video signals, video cable should be pulled to allow whole-house video distribution with audio signals routed through the C-612 rather than the TVs for improved audio performance. Pull RG6 coaxial cable in home runs directly from each possible TV or video display location directly to the C-612 Controller location. RG6 quad shield preferred. Coaxial cable length will vary with system design. Terminate with appropriate quality gold-plated connectors. NOTE: Coaxial Cable is appropriate for distributing composite video. If distributing component video or HDMI, there are varying schemes and wire specifications for multiroom high resolution video distribution. (Component video over component cable, component video or HDMI over CAT5/5e/6, etc.) If using a Component Video or HDMI Extender, please refer to appropriate documentation for wire specification. Mute Pull two conductor stranded wire from the 12VDC control output on the device that will trigger audio muting to the C-612 Controller location. Terminate with a 2.1mm coaxial plug on the C-612 end. POLARITY: TIP = +12VDC, SLEEVE = GND. WIRE GAUGE: 20AWG up to 500 ; 18AWG up to Non-shielded preferred. MAX VOLTAGE IN: 32VDC. NOTE: Audio mute function will mute all active zones when 12VDC is present on this input. No additional programming or configuration is required. RS-232 When controlling the C-612 from an external controller such as a whole-house control system or touch panel, use a DB9M (male) cable for the C-612 RS232 Port and terminate the control system or touch screen end as appropriate. 18 CONNECTIONS When connecting source components, or making any connections, be sure that the C-612 Controller and all system devices are turned OFF and disconnected from AC power to prevent electrical shock and to avoid possibly damaging components. HEAD END CONNECTIONS Keypads Using CAT5 cable properly terminated with a RJ45 plug (see section: Wiring/Keypads) connect the zone CAT-5 cable to the appropriate zone terminal on the C-612 rear panel. Speakers 1. Using 14-16AWG two-conductor stranded wire, strip approximately ¼ of insulation from each conductor. Twist the strands until tight. 2. Connect the bare wires to the appropriate L+,L-,R-,R+ terminals on one of the included four-position plug-in connectors. Be sure to maintain proper polarity. Be sure there are no loose strands sticking out that could cause a short. When screwing down the wire clamps, be sure that the wire insulation does not get caught in the clamp. 3. Plug the connector into the appropriate zone speaker terminal. Source Audio Using one quality stereo RCA audio cable with gold connectors for each audio source, connect the left & right audio outputs of each source to the appropriate left & right audio inputs on the C-612 Controller for Sources 1-4. IR Emitters Sources 1-4 Use one of the included IR emitters for each external source component. 1. Plug each emitter into the appropriate source IR output jack (1-4). (If the CD player is source 1, plug the emitter for the CD player into emitter jack 1.) 2. Attach the emitter to the front panel of the device being controlled over the IR eye. If the eye is not obvious, refer to the owner s manual for that product or shine a small flashlight into the front panel to locate the eye. NOTE: IR commands initiated by a C-612 Keypad or R-3 Remote will be routed to the emitter for the selected source. (Commands for Source 1 will only output from emitter 1.) IR pass-through, (IR Commands initiated by the original equipment remote or a programmed remote) will output from all source emitters (but not the 'All" emitter). All Use one of the included emitters or any standard IR emitter with 3.5mm mini-phone plug to control a single common device. (IR controlled lights, drapes, lifts, screens etc.) If there is more than one common device, use a 3.5mm mini-phone plug with pig tail to connect to the IR and ground input terminals on an amplified IR connecting block to drive additional emitters. POLARITY: TIP = SIG; SLEEVE = GND. NOTE: The All output will output IR from any keypad or remote in any zone, but not IR passthrough, (IR Commands initiated by an original equipment hand held remote). Mute Using a properly configured 2.1mm coaxial plug, (see section: Wiring/Mute) connect the 2.1mm coaxial plug to the Mute jack on the C-612 rear panel. Terminate the other end as appropriate and connect to the 12VDC control output terminal on the device used to trigger audio mute. Be sure to maintain proper polarity from the trigger device control out to the 2.1mm coaxial plug. RS-232 Using a properly configured DB9 cable (see section: Wiring/RS-232), connect the DB9 male connector to the RS-232 jack on the C-612 rear panel. Appropriately terminate and connect the other end to an appropriate RS-232 port on the control device. See section: RS-232 Protocol for additional information. 18

Terminate the other end of the control wire as appropriate and connect to the appropriate control out on the paging device. 4. Plug the connector into the Audio Page Terminal. ZONE CONNECTIONS Keypads Using CAT5 cable properly terminated with a RJ45 plug (see section: Wiring/Keypads) connect the zone CAT-5 cable to the Keypad Controller Connection (RJ45) jack on the keypad rear panel. Speakers 1. Using the 14-16AWG two-conductor stranded wire pulled for zone speaker connections, strip approximately ¼ of insulation from each conductor. Twist the strands until tight. 2. Connect the bare wires to the appropriate L+, L-, R-, R+ terminals on the left and right zone speakers. Be sure to maintain proper polarity. Be sure there are no loose strands sticking out that could cause a short. Video (Option) Using appropriately terminated RG6 coaxial cable, connect the Video Out from an A/V source or video distribution amp to the appropriate input on a zone TV or video display. NOTE: Coaxial Cable is appropriate for distributing composite video. If distributing component video or HDMI, there are varying schemes and wire specifications for multiroom high resolution video distribution. (Component video over component cable, component video or HDMI over CAT5/5e/6, etc.) If using a Component Video or HDMI Extender, please refer to appropriate documentation for wire specification and connection instructions. 19

20 EXPANDED SYSTEMS Two C-612 Controllers can be linked together to expand a C-612 system to up to twelve zones. The fundamental installation and connections are similar to those on a single controller system with a few minor changes. Figure 14. Expanded C-612 System 20

21 Nexlink Connection This connection allows communication between the Master and Slave Controllers for zone/system status, system/source power management, page control, mute control and external common source IR control from the keypads or remotes used in the zones connected to the Slave Controller. Using a RJ11 patch cable configured in a crossover configuration, connect the Nexlink jack on the Master Controller to the Nexlink jack on the Slave Controller. See Figure 15b for construction of cable. NOTE: Two linked C-612 Controllers must be configured for Master/Slave configuration in the Main Menu Master /Slave Setup (Main Menu item 10). IR emitter and mute/page connections are made to the master. Source Audio Source audio must be distributed to both the Master and Slave Controller source inputs to have source audio signals available to all zones. Use either Y adapters or an audio distribution amp to split the line level audio signal from the source outputs to the source audio inputs on both controllers as shown in Figure 14. NOTE: If using an A/V Source an audio/video distribution amp is recommended to split the audio signals to the C-162 Controllers and provide multiple video outs that can be distributed to the zone video displays and maintain proper signal level. IR Emitters The IR Emitter are connected to the Master Controller IR Outputs as done in a single controller system. The Slave Controller will communicate IR control to the Master via the Nexlink connection. See section: Connections/IR Emitters for additional information. Speakers Speakers are connected to the appropriate Master or Slave Zone Speaker Outs as described in section: Connections/Speakers. Mute The Audio Mute control IN is connected to the Master Controller Mute jack as done in a single controller system. The Master Controller will communicate Audio Mute to the Slave Zones via the Nexlink connection. See section: Connections/Mute for additional information. Page Audio Page Audio The audio for paging must be distributed to both the Master and Slave Controller Page Audio inputs to have the Page Audio signals available to all zones. Using quality audio cable, jump the Page Audio terminals on the Master Controller to the Page Audio Terminals on the Slave Controller as shown in Figure 15a. Though polarity from the Page Audio Source to the Master Page Audio IN is not critical, do maintain proper polarity between the Master and Slave Page Audio Terminals. Be sure there are no loose strands sticking out that can cause shorts. Page Control - The Page Audio Control IN is connected to the Master Controller Page Audio Control Terminals as done in a single controller system. The Master Controller will communicate Page control to the Slave via the Nexlink connection. See section: Connections/Page Audio for additional information. 21

23 PROGRAMMING Programming IR Commands C-612 System programming takes only a few minutes and provides power management and basic transport control for the connected sources. Out of the box, the system has default programming for Controller & Zone ON/OFF, Input Select and Volume UP/DOWN so those functions do not require programming. When finished, the buttons on the C-612 Keypads and R-3 will have the same functionality. NOTE 1: IR commands are stored in memory locations in the C-612 Controller that are associated with the keypad and R-3 remote buttons. When a button on a keypad or the R-3 is pressed, the C-612 recognizes the button location and outputs the associated IR command. If programming a universal remote for IR control, the appropriate R-3 button IR commands will need to be learned by the universal remote to trigger system functions and source commands stored in the C-612. NOTE 2: The programmable keypad buttons can only be programmed for single IR commands with the exception of the Power Buttons. The Power buttons can be programmed for two commands, (ON/OFF). If discreet ON/OFF commands are available, teach both as prompted in Learn IR Commands/Source Power Commands. If only Toggle commands are available, teach the toggle command twice as prompted. Macros can be created in a separate programming function. See section: Programming/Macros. Button Mapping All buttons on the C-612 Keypad have matching buttons on the R-3 Remote. These buttons only need to be programmed once, and once programmed, the learned IR commands are available to the keypad and remote. The R-3 has additional buttons, not available to the keypads that can be programmed for source IR control. These IR commands are not learned by the R-3. These commands are learned by the C-612 Controller using the same method as programming the common buttons. Once programmed, when a R-3 button is pressed, the R-3 command will be recognized by the C-612 Controller and the C-612 will then output the associated source IR command via the appropriate source IR Emitter. In Figure 16, the white buttons are programmable for the same IR commands on the C-612 Keypads and R-3 Remote. The gray buttons on the R-3 Remote are only programmable for the R-3. 24 Programming utilizes the R-3 Remote Control, the original manufacturer remotes for the sources to be controlled and requires that the C-612 Controller has AC power. All sources should be connected and have IR emitters attached to test commands. Note: in a master/slave configuration, teach the IR commands into the master only. You may turn off the Slave to void having it responds to commands from the R-3 remote during programming. To program C-612 source control: NOTE: TO NAVIGATE THE SETUP MENUS, USE THE LOWER CURSOR ON THE R-3 REMOTE. Learn IR Codes 1. To activate IR Learning, hold the R-3 Remote 3-4 inches from the IR Learning Eye on the C-612 Front Panel and press the PGM Button until the Main Menu appears in the Front Panel Display. Source Power Commands The C-612 features automatic source power management. When any zone is turned ON, the C-612 will output any IR commands learned to the source ON memory locations. Approximately 20 seconds after the last zone is turned OFF the C-612 will issue any IR commands learned to the source OFF memory locations. The Power buttons can be programmed for two commands, (ON/OFF). If discreet ON/OFF commands are available, teach both as prompted in Learn IR Mode. If only Toggle commands are available, teach the toggle command twice as prompted. 24

25 a) Press the Power button on the R-3. ON will appear on the Function Line. Teach code now will appear on the bottom line. b) Position the remote with the Source ON or power toggle command to be learned 1-2 inches from the IR Learning Eye on the C-612 Front Panel. Quickly press the button with the specific command. c) Code Learned will appear in the bottom line when the ON command has been learned. d) Select Source or Function will appear in the bottom line. e) Press the Power button on the R-3. OFF will appear on the Function Line. Teach code now will appear on the bottom line. f) Position the remote with the Source OFF or power toggle command to be learned 1-2 inches from the IR Learning Eye on the C-612 Front Panel. Quickly press the button with the specific command. g) Code Learned will appear in the bottom line when the OFF command has been learned. 10. Select Source or Function will appear in the bottom line. Repeat Steps 6-9 for all commands to be learned for a given source. To select a different source, press INPUT 1-6 on the R-3, then repeat Steps 6-9. Note: Source can be changed only when the screen says 'Select source or function' 11. To exit IR Learning Screen, press Exit on the R-3. The Main Menu will appear. 12. To exit the Main Menu, press Exit again. The C-612 will be in Normal Mode. Erase IR Codes 1. With IR Learning selected in the Main Menu, Figure 17, Press 1 or Enter on the R-3. Select Source or Function will re-appear in the Display. Repeat Steps 6-7 for all commands to be erased for a given source. To select a different source, press INPUT 1-6 on the R-3, then repeat Steps

26 10. To exit Erase IR Screen, press Exit on the R-3. The Main Menu will appear. 11. To exit the Main Menu, press Exit again. The C-612 will be in Normal Mode. Erase 1 Source 1. With the Erase IR Codes Menu open, Figure 20, press 2 on the R-3 or press on the R-3 to move the brackets to Erase 1 Source, then press Enter on the R-3. The Erase Source Screen will appear. 2. Press INPUT 1-6 to select the source to be erased. (All learned IR commands for this source will be erased.) 3. Press PRG on the R Source Erased will appear at the bottom of the Front Panel Display when the code has been erased. 5. Select Source will re-appear in the Display. Repeat Steps 2-3 for all sources to be erased. 6. To exit Erase IR Screen, press Exit on the R-3. The Main Menu will appear. 7. To exit the Main Menu, press Exit again. The C-612 will be in Normal Mode. Erase ALL Codes 1. With the Erase IR Codes Menu open, Figure 20, press 3 on the R-3 or press on the R-3 to move the brackets to Erase All Codes then press Enter on the R-3. The Erase All Codes Screen will appear. 2. The message: ERASE ALL CODES ARE YOU SURE? Y N will appear in the Display. 3. Press to move the brackets to Y for YES. N for NO 4. Press Enter on the R If Y was selected, All Codes Erased will appear in the Display. The IR Programming Menu will appear. If N was selected, no codes will have been erased and the IR Programming Menu will appear. 6. Make a selection from the Menu and proceed as appropriate. 7. To exit IR Programming, press Exit on the R-3. The Main Menu will appear. 8. To exit the Main Menu, press Exit again. The C-612 will be in Normal Mode. Test IR Codes All learned IR commands should be tested to confirm that functional commands were learned and that the commands that were learned are the right ones. Testing IR commands requires that the source components are powered and have IR emitters attached and connected to the correct Emitter Out on the C-612 Rear Panel. 1. With IR Learning selected in the Main Menu, Figure 17, Press the R-3 Enter button. The IR Programming Menu will appear. Figure Press 3 on the R-3 or press twice so the brackets are on Test IR Codes, then press the Enter on the R-3. The Test IR Codes Screen will appear, Figure X. Figure 22. 27 Repeat Steps 5-6 for all commands to be tested for a given source. To select a different source, press INPUT 1-6 on the R-3, then repeat Steps 5-6. NOTE: In addition to the keypad commands, be sure to test IR commands that are going to be triggered from the R-3. To exit Test IR Screen, press Exit on the R-3. The Main Menu will appear. To exit the Main Menu, press Exit again. The C-612 will be in Normal Mode. IR Pass through Frequency The C-612 is capable of passing IR remote control commands received by the keypad IR Sensors through to the source components IR Emitters. The carrier frequency is stripped off at the keypad, and added back on at the C-612 before being sent to the IR Emitters. The C-612 is able to re-modulate the IR signal at 38kHz, and 56kHz. Most components use the 38kHz frequency, so try it first. If it doesn t work, try the 56kHz setting. This parameter is setup in the IR Pass Through Screen on a per source basis. NOTE: IR Pass through commands output from all source emitters and the All emitter. 1. With the Main Menu open, press 2 or position the cursor in front of IR Passthru freq, Figure 23, and then press Enter on the R-3. The IR Passthru Screen will appear. Figure 24 Figure 23. Press on the R-3 to select modulation frequency. 4. Repeat Steps 2-3 for all sources that are going to be controlled with a hand held remote. 5. Press Enter on the R-3 to save the settings. Press Exit on the R-3 to quit IR Passthru. In either case the Front Panel Display will return to the Main Menu. 6. To exit the Main Menu, press Exit again. The C-612 will be in Normal Mode. Source Naming The keypads are able to display customized names for each source input to make it easier to identify which source is selected. The default names for the sources are: TUNER, INPUT 1, INPUT 2 INPUT 6. The source names can be changed through the Source Naming Menu. Names can be selected from the menu or custom names can be created manually. 1. With the Main Menu open, press 3 or position the cursor in front of Source Naming, Figure 25, and then press Enter on the R-3. The Source Naming Screen will appear. Figure 26 Figure 25. Press Exit on the R-3 to exit the Source Naming Screen. Updating Keypads will appear at the top of the Front Panel Display and then return to the Main Menu. 11. To exit the Main Menu, press Exit again. The C-612 will be in Normal Mode. The C-612 will be in Normal Mode. Input Level Trim The different source components in a system can have different output levels. When switching inputs, this will cause some sources to sound louder than others. The Input Level Trim feature provides a method of balancing the relative loudness of the different sources. Each input can be attenuated up to 12db in 1db increments from unity gain. To properly adjust trim, all sources must be connected to their appropriate inputs on the C-612 Controller. They must all be loaded with program material (Tuner Channel, CD, DVD, etc.) and playing. When selecting program material, choose material with similar characteristics. That is, don t have the Tuner set to an easy listening station while the CD player is playing high octane shred metal. Consider also the dynamics of movies from DVD and Satellite where the sound track can range from low level dialogue to sound of jet engines and explosions. With all sources playing scroll through the inputs to get a reference to the relative levels of the different sources. To set Input Level Trim: 1. With the Main Menu open, press 5 or position the cursor in front of Input Level Trim, Figure 29, and then press Enter on the R-3. The Input Level Trim Screen will appear. Figure 30 Figure 29. Scroll through the sources again to confirm balanced levels. 9. Repeat Steps 1-8 until all source outputs are equal. Page/Mute Setup The C-612 can be used for whole-house paging when used with an appropriately featured telephone system or microphone preamp having a line level audio output and 12VDC control output. It also has a zone mute function that can be used to mute selected zones with a 12VDC control input. Both features, 29

30 Page and Mute have a variable timeout of 1-60 seconds, to set how long the selected source will be interrupted when triggered by a 12VDC pulse. To program Page and Mute functions: 1. With the Main Menu open, press 6 or position the cursor in front of Page/Mute Setup, Figure 31, and then press Enter on the R-3. The Page/Mute Setup Screen will appear. Figure 32 Figure 31. Press on the R-3 to set an Audio Page duration from 0-60 seconds. 17. NOTE: Page Timeout can be used to convert a 12V pulse to a page timeout up to 60 seconds. A constant voltage will hold the page function as long as voltage is present on the PAGE terminal. For constant voltage, set Page Timeout to 0 seconds or additional seconds will be added to page timeout after the voltage has been removed. 18. Press Enter to save all Page/Mute Settings. Settings Saved will appear at the top of the Front Panel Display and then the Main Menu will appear. 19. To exit the Main Menu, press Exit. The C-612 will be in Normal Mode. 30

31 Zone Sharing Zone Sharing allows linking up to three zones. Zone Sharing has two options. One, volume/power follows [Y], permanently links up to three zones by power, source and volume in the System Setup. The second, volume/power follows [N] permanently links up to three zones but only by source when active. To program Zone Sharing: 1. With the Main Menu open, press 7 or position the cursor in front of Zone Sharing, Figure 34, and then press Enter on the R-3. The Zone Sharing Screen will appear. Figure 35 Figure 34. With the Brackets on Input, (Figure 38) press on the R-3 to select the Input with the button with the macro to be erased. 2. Press so the Brackets are on KEY. 3. With the Brackets on KEY, press on the R-3 to select the button with the macro to be erased. 4. Press so the Brackets are on MACRO. The cursor will appear under the first command slot for the macro. 5. Press to clear the IR command and (-) appears in the command slot and? appears after IR. 6. Alternately press and to clear commands in the macro as needed. 7. Press Exit to save and return to the Main Menu. 8. To exit the Main Menu, press Exit again. The C-612 will be in Normal Mode. USB From time to time Nexus Audio will release firmware updates for the C-612 Controller and Keypads. Sometimes these updates will be improvements to system functionality and sometimes they will be new feature additions. Updating firmware on the C-612 is done with a USB Flash (thumb) Drive. Updates can be obtained by contacting Nexus Audio Systems Inc. The file for the C-612 Controller (if included) will be named C612Vx.xx.bin. The "Vx.xx" denotes the code version. Before copying the file to the flash drive, it must be renamed to C612.bin or the C-612 will not 32

33 recognize it. Similarly, the file for the keypads (if included) will be named C612K1Vx.xx.bin. It will have to be renamed to C612K1.bin, or it will not be recognized by the C-612. The USB flash drive to be used for the upgrade can have other files on it, but if there are a lot of files, the C-612 may take a long time to initialize before the upgrade begins. If the C-612 does not initialize or download the update, delete the extraneous files, or use another flash drive with less or no files on it. Upgrading the C-612 Controller 1. Rename, and copy the file C612.bin to a USB flash drive. 2. Turn off the C Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port on the C-612 Rear Panel. 4. Turn on the C Wait for programming to complete, as indicated on the Front Panel Display. 6. Remove the USB flash drive, and cycle the power on the C If using a slave chassis, it will need to be upgraded also. Upgrading the C-612 Keypads 1. Rename, and copy the file C612K1.bin to a USB flash drive. 2. As a check, turn the C-612 OFF, then ON, and verify that all attached keypads are properly detected. ( 1Y 2Y 3Y 4Y 5Y 6Y will appear on the Front Panel Display.) 3. Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port on the C-612 Rear Panel. USB ready will appear on the Front Panel Display. 4. Press and hold PRG on the R-3 until the Main Menu appears. 5. With the Main Menu open, press 9 or position the cursor in front of USB Menu, Figure 39, and then press Enter on the R-3. 34 Master/Slave When using two C-612 Controllers in an expanded system of up to twelve zones, each controller needs to be configured as the Master or Slave. The units will not properly sync for zone/system status, system/source power management, page control, mute control and external common source control if this selection is not properly configured. This selection must be made on BOTH controllers. 1. With Master/Slave selected in the Main Menu, Figure 41, Press the Enter on the R-3. The Set Master/Slave Screen will appear. Figure 42 Figure 41. Version From time to time, Nexus will release new versions of C-612 Firmware to improve performance of the system or add features. To be sure the C-612 is running the latest version of Firmware, check the version running on the C-612 as described below, and then check for updates at in the Support room. 1. 35 RS-232 PROTOCOL The C-612 Controller has an RS-232 Port that allows the system to be controlled with a touch screen controller or become a sub-system in a whole-house control package. This allows system operation such as turning on certain zones for background music when the alarm system is deactivated. Conversely, a command can be sent to turn all zones off when the alarm system is activated. The C-612 RS-232 Port allows full control of all system functions. In addition to being able to control the C-612 Controller s on board functions (ON/OFF, input select, etc) RS-232 control also allows control of the connected source components. When the C-612 sees a command for one of the on board functions, it responds accordingly. When it sees a command such as CD play, the incoming RS-232 command is interpreted in a similar manner to a keypad button press and the C-612 will then output the appropriate corresponding IR command. The RS-232 Port on the C-612 is a DB9 female jack. Tx (transmit) = PIN 2, Rx (receive) = PIN 3, Ground = PIN 5. Communication settings are 9600 baud, 8 bits, 1 stop bit, no parity. Figure 45. A carriage return is a single, nonprintable character with a hexadecimal value of 0x0D, or decimal 13. This character is represented in this document by the string <cr> If an invalid command is sent, the C-612 will respond with ERR<cr>. If a valid command is sent, the C-612 will respond with OK<cr> unless it is a query type command, in which case the C-612 will respond with information terminated with <cr>. Every response from the C-612 is terminated with a carriage return. The C-612 sends out unsolicited information whenever a keypad is operated. The syntax is the same as that used for controlling the C-612. The information will be terminated with <cr>. The RS-232 commands for the Nexus C-612 are outlined in a separate document titled "Nexus C-612 RS-232 protocol". Please contact Nexus Audio Systems Inc. for a copy of this document. 35

36 OPTION BAYS On the back of the C-612 are two option bays. Looking at the back of the unit, the bay on the left is tied to input 5, and the bay on the right is tied to input 6. See figure 46. Slot 1 = Input 5 Slot 2 = Input 6 Figure 46. C-612 option bays. There are two types of module available: 1. An ipod dock adapter module. This module enables connection of an ipod dock to the C-612. See figure to right. 2. An audio input module. This module enables the addition of extra audio inputs on the C-612. See figure to right. MODULE INSTALLATION The installation of modules in the C-612 is the same regardless of which module is being installed: 1. Turn off the C-612 and unplug the unit from the mains. NOTE: failure to follow this step may result in injury. 2. Remove the cover of the C-612 by removing the thirteen screws holding it in place. Set the cover and the screws aside. 3. Remove the cover plate from the option bay in which you want to install a module. The two screws will be re-used to secure the module being installed. 4. Gently insert the option module through the opening in the back of the C-612, and secure it using the two screws saved from the cover plate. 5. Inside the C-612 you will see a grey ribbon cable coming from the just installed module with a black connector on the end of it. Gently push this connector into the socket directly below it on the large circuit board. 6. If you have another module to install, do it now using the same procedure. 7. Re-install the cover. Make sure all screws are accounted for, and none have made their way inside the unit. 8. Make all the required connections to the installed module(s), then plug the C-612 in and turn it on. 36

37 CONNECTING AN IPOD DOCK Please refer to figure 47 when connecting one or more ipod docks to a C-612. No audio connections need to be made, as audio is transfered through the DATA I/O cable. When connecting more than one ipod dock, it is important that the address switches on the rear of the ipod docks are set differently. Using a small screwdriver, set the address on ipod dock #1 to 0, and set the address on ipod dock #2 to 1. Figure 47. ipod dock connections Please refer to Figure 48 when connecting one or more ipod docks on a stacked system. The master has ipod modules installed, and the slave has audio input modules installed. Audio is passed from master to slave through the use of RCA patch cords. As in the single chassis system above, each ipod dock needs a unique address. Using a small screwdriver, set the address on ipod dock #1 to 0, and set the address on ipod dock #2 to 1. Figure 48. ipod docks on a stacked system Using the configuration shown in Figure 48, audio and control of the ipod docks is available from all twelve zones in the system. Some points to remember when setting up a stacked system; Make sure that the Master unit is setup to be a master in the menu settings, and the Slave is setup to be a slave. See the section on MASTER/SLAVE on page 34. Also, in order for the ipod docks to work across all twelve 37

38 zones, make sure that the ipod inputs are named the same on the master and slave. For example, if input 5 (ipod dock #1) is named "ipod 1" on the master, then it should also be named "ipod 1" on the slave. Same goes for input 6 (ipod dock #2), it could be named "ipod 2" on both chassis. Please see SOURCE NAMING on page 27. KEYPAD OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS The following describes basic system operation using C-612 Keypads with system default programming and suggested IR programming. All functions described can also be controlled by pressing the same buttons on the R-3 Remote. MAIN POWER Set the Main Power Switch to the ON position. The Front Panel Display will run a diagnostic screen that will first display BOOT and then a Home Page indicating the connected keypads. When finished, the Normal Mode Screen will appear. ON/OFF, Source Select, Volume 1. Press to turn a Zone ON. 2. Repeatedly press Source to choose a Source (Keypad), press INPUTS 1-6 on the Remote. 3. Press to adjust Volume Down or Up. 4. Press to turn a Zone OFF. 5. Press and Hold to turn ALL ZONES OFF. CD, DVD, VCR, MP3 etc 1. Select a device such as a CD or DVD player, ipod, etc. 2. Press (*) to play or output programmed command. 3. Press or to select previous or next track or disc as programmed. 4. Press to select previous or next track or disc as programmed. 5. Press /II to stop/pause or output programmed command. 6. Press R-C3 Remote buttons for same functions from remote. Satellite, Cable, XM, Sirius, VCR Tuner Etc 1. Press to manually tune channel frequency up/down by one increment. Press R-C3 Remote buttons for same functions from the remote. Saving Tuner Presets 1. Press and hold /II to select AM/FM. 2.Press to manually tune a channel to be saved as a Preset. If a channel is saved as a Preset, P01-P20 will appear to the left of the channel frequency. 3. If tuned to a channel that is not a Preset press and hold (*) to open the Save Preset Screen. Or press Menu. The Keypad Menu will appear. With Save Preset selected, press (*).
