4 Instrument at a Glance Overview Scarlet ST-109 A high performance Integrating Sound Level Meter which conforms to international standard IEC61672 Class 1. Scarlet ST-107S Conforms to IEC61672 Class 2 which makes itself outstanding since other class 2 instruments claimed in the market are rarely true. Both models measure SPL, Lmax, Lmin, Leq, SEL, Peak and RT60. Frequency weighting (A, C, Z) and time weighting (F, S, I) can be simultaneously surveyed. With the state-of-art microphone technology, the dynamic range is greater than 100 db and user doesn't need to select the measuring range prior to taking readings. 5 Buttons The buttons in the front panel (page 4) controls the instrument functionality: Icon Symbol Functions POWER Turn on/off the device. BACKLIGHT A/C/Z START/PAUSE Turn on/off the backlight. Switch among three frequency weighting filter (A, C, Z). Start/pause measuring. F/S/I Switch among three time constants. Fast, Slow and Impulse. FUNC SET REC/MEM Select measuring mode among SPL, Leq, SEL, Peak and RT60. See more details in the section of each measuring mode. Enter setup mode to configure the instrument. Settings including clock, recording, power saving, memory and SD card operation will be covered in the next sections. Recording data/reading recorded data out of the memory. UP Data hold. Used as up arrow key in setup menu. RIGHT Clock display selection. Used as right arrow key in setup menu. ENTER DOWN LEFT Enter key. Stop measuring. Used as down arrow key in setup mode. Clock display selection. Used as left" arrow key in setup mode. 5

6 Display The large size LCD display shows the readings of sound level also the icons to present the current measure mode and the status of the instrument: Icon Meaning Auto power off Instrument is in reverberation time measuring mode. Data hold Instrument is in LCpeak measuring mode. Instrument is in sound exposure level measuring mode. Instrument is in sound pressure level measuring mode. Instrument is in equivalent continuous level measuring mode. Sound level readout Maximum sound level has been measured. 7 Getting Started Before using Check the instrument quickly in order to detect any possible damage that may cause during transport. If its damage, claims to the dealer immediately. Check the packaging content according to packing list in page 25.In case of discrepancies, contact the dealer immediately. Measure SPL Following procedure shows how to use the instrument to measure Sound Pressure Level (SPL), the most fundamental acoustic measurement needed by most applications. Please note the default configurations of instrument in SPL measuring mode, A weighting and Fast time constant. Press POWER button to turn on the device. Press F/S/I button to select Impulse/Fast/Slow time weighting. Press A/C/Z button to select A/C/Z frequency weighting. Press START/PAUSE button to start measuring. Read the sound level from the display. Press START/PAUSE button again to pause the measurement or press DOWN button to stop the measurement. Data hold Press UP button to lock the display. Hold icon will be displayed. Press UP button again to unlock the display. Hold icon will be gone. Lmax & Lmin To measure Lmax and Lmin, please follow the procedure given in Measure SPL section above. User will be able to read maximum and minimum value from the display. Press UP button to pause the measurement also the maximum and minimum value. Press UP button again to resume the measurement. 7

8 Record & view data Press REC/MEM button anytime you want to memorize the reading. Long press REC/MEM button (> 1 sec) to enter data viewing mode. In data viewing mode, press UP or DOWN button to scroll through the readings. In data viewing mode, press LEFT or RIGHT button to display date or time. To exit data viewing mode, press REC/MEM button. Windscreen WARNING: Wind blowing across the microphone would introduce extraneous noise. Once using the instrument in the presence of wind with speed higher than 10 m/s, it must mount the windscreen to prevent the undesirable signals. Keep the microphone dry and avoid severe vibration. The windscreen made by poly foam is shipped with the instrument. Please genteelly insert the microphone into the hole of the windscreen. 8

9 Settings Date & time Press SET button to enter setup mode. The first menu is date & time. Press LEFT or RIGHT button to iterate through date & time. Press UP or DOWN to change the digit. Press Enter to save the changes and exit setup mode. Or press SET button to discard the changes and move to the next menu. Auto record Press SET button to enter setup mode. Press SET button 1 more time to reach auto record menu. Press LEFT or RIGHT button to select the option. Press UP or DOWN to change the digit. Press Enter to save the changes and exit setup mode. The meter will now record data automatically per the time interval you just setup. Or press SET button to discard the changes and move toward the next setup. NOTE: Valid time interval is from 1 sec to 23 hrs 59 mins 59 secs. Set time interval to 0 sec will disable auto recording. 9

10 Auto power off Press SET button to enter setup mode. Press SET button 2 more times to reach auto power off menu. Press UP or DOWN to change the digit. The unit is minute. Press Enter to save the changes and exit setup mode. The meter will be automatically turned off per the time you setup. Or press SET button to discard the changes and move toward the next setup. NOTE: Set the time as 0 will disable auto power off function. The maximum time interval is 99 mins. 10

11 Handle Recorded Data Delete data Press Set button to enter setup mode. Press SET button 3 more times to reach data delete menu. Press REC/MEM button to delete the last item in data logger. The action can be repeated until the memory is empty. Press Enter to exit setup mode. Or press SET button to move to the next menu. Clear memory Press SET button to enter setup mode. Press SET button 4 more times to reach clear data memory menu. Press REC/MEM button and LCD will flash ALL. Press REC/MEM button again to clear the data logger memory. Press Enter to save the changes and exit setup mode. Or press SET button to discard the changes and move to the next setup. 11

12 Copy data to SD card Before the operation, please charge the instrument with the AC adapter. Insert a FAT/FAT32 formatted SD card into the SD slot located in the bottom of the instrument. Transcend is recommended and was well tested in our lab. Press SET button to enter setup mode. Press SET button 5 more times to reach data copy function.press REC/MEM button to start copying logger data to the SD card. Press Enter to save the changes and exit setup mode. Or press SET button to discard the changes and move to the next setup. Auto backup Auto backup function enables the instrument to copy recorded data from the memory to the SD card and to purge the memory. Charge the instrument with the AC adapter. Insert a FAT/FAT32 formatted SD card into the SD slot located in the bottom of the instrument. Transcend is recommended and was well tested. Press SET button to enter setup mode. Press SET button 6 more times to reach auto backup menu. Press UP or DOWN button to turn on/off auto back function. Press Enter to save the changes and exit setup mode. Or press SET button to discard the changes and move to the next setup. 12

13 Calibration Calibrator A Class 1 Sound Level Calibrator complied with IEC 60942:2003 Class1/ANSI S is necessary. Scarlet ST-120 is a good choice. To calibrate ST-107S, a class 2 Sound Level Calibrator is needed and Scarlet ST-100 is a good choice. For more information about the calibrator, please contact Scarlet Tech support team info@scarlet.com.tw. Procedure Read the manual of calibrator before conducting the calibration. The basic principle of the calibration is that the calibrator generates the nominal sound level at 94 db@1 khz and feed the signal into the sound level meter under test (DUT). The DUT then corrects itself according to the values measured during a period of time. Make sure the instrument is well inserted into the chamber of the calibrator. Press SET button to enter setup mode. Press SET button 7 times to reach calibration menu. The LCD displays measured values in the bottom right and the value estimated to be written back the memory in the bottom left. Press Enter to save the changes and exit setup mode. Or press SET button to discard the changes and exit setup mode. Period of calibration It is suggested the instrument needs to be calibrated once a year. In case of intensive usage or readings are believed deviated from the expectation, please calibrate the instrument to ensure the accuracy of readings. 13

14 Measure SPL (Lp) Definition Sound Pressure Level, SPL or Lp is a logarithmic measures of the RMS sound pressure of a sound relative to a reference value, the threshold of hearing. It is measured in decibels (db). Lp = 20 log (p/ p 0) db. Parameters to be measured LAF/LAFmax/LAFmin: A weighted, Fast, Sound Level LAS/LASmax/LASmin: A weighted, Slow, Sound Level LCF/LCFmax/LCFmin: C weighted, Fast, Sound Level LCS/LCSmax/LCSmin: C weighted, Slow, Sound Level LZF/LZFmax/LZFmin: Z weighted, Fast, Sound Level LZS/LZSmax/LZSmin: Z weighted, Slow, Sound Level Operation The default frequency filter is A and time constant is Fast in SPL mode. SPL is the default measurement mode the instrument will enter after booting. Press F/S/I button to select the detector time constant and press A/C/Z button to select the frequency filter prior to the measure. Press START/PAUSE button to start measuring SPL, Lmax and Lmin. Press START/PAUSE button again to pause the measurement. Press DOWN button to end the measurement. From left to right Before measuring > in measuring > end by pressing DOWN button. Note Before ending the measurement by pressing DOWN button, the only actions user can perform are to record data by pressing REC/MEM button and to pause the measurement by pressing START/ PAUSE button. 14

15 Measure Leq Definition Equivalent Continuous Sound Level, Leq, is the preferred method to describe sound levels that vary over time, resulting in a single decibel value which takes into account the total sound energy over the period of time of interest. Parameters to be measured LAeq: A-weighted, equivalent sound level. LCeq: C-weighted, equivalent sound level. LZeq: Z-weighted, equivalent sound level. Operation The default settings in Leq mode is A-weighted, Fast and 30 secs of integral time Press FUNC button to select Leq mode. Press A/C/Z button to select the frequency filter. Press START/PAUSE button to start the measurement. Press START/PAUSE button again to pause the measurement. Press DOWN button to end the measurement. From left to right Before measuring > in measuring > end by pressing DOWN button. Note Before ending the measurement by pressing DOWN button, the only actions user can perform are to record data by pressing REC/MEM button and to pause the measurement by pressing START/ PAUSE button. 15

16 Integral time & auto record Setup integral time NOTE: Make sure the instrument is in Leq mode and is NOT measuring data. Press SET button to enter integral time setup menu. Select 1 of 9 presets (SET 0 to SET 8) or define your integral time (SET 9). Press Enter to make choice or press SET button to move to next preset. Note: SET 8 means the integral time is 1 day (24 hrs). In SET 9 (user define), the longest integral time is 30 days 23 hrs 59 mins 59 secs. Press LEFT or RIGHT button to iterate through day/hr/min/sec. Enable Leq auto record Auto record in Leq is useful to record the Equivalent Continuous Sound Level automatically after the defined period of time and trigger the next Leq integration and measurement. In Leq mode, press SET button to enter integral time menu. Press REC/MEM button to enable/disable auto record function in Leq mode. Check the REC icon. Press Enter button to save the settings along with the setting of integral time. 16

17 Measure SEL (LAE) Definition Sound Exposure Level, SEL, is the logarithmic measure of the A-weighted, Sound Pressure Level squared and integrated over a stated period of time or event, relative to a reference sound pressure value. The units are the decibel (dba). Parameters to be measured LAE: A-weighted, Sound Exposure Level. LCE: C-weighted, Sound Exposure Level. LZE: Z-weighted, Sound Exposure Level. Operation The default settings in SEL mode is A-weighted, Fast. Press FUNC button to select SEL mode. Press A/C/Z button to select the frequency filter. Press START/PAUSE button to start the measurement. Press START/PAUSE button again to pause the measurement. Press DOWN button to end the measurement. From left to right Before measuring > in measuring > end by pressing DOWN button. Note Before ending the measurement by pressing DOWN button, the only actions user can perform are to record data by pressing REC/MEM button and to pause the measurement by pressing START/ PAUSE button. 17

18 Measure Peak (LCpeak) Definition Peak should not to be confused with Lmax which is usually measured with a Fast or Slow weighting. Peak can only be measured with a C or Flat [Z] Frequency Weighting, and even C-weighted Peak should be treated with discretion. The A curve, for example introduces it's own time constant which makes the measurement of True Peak impossible. Parameters to be measured LCpeak: C-weighted, Peak Sound Level. Operation Press FUNC button to select Peak mode. Press START/PAUSE button to start the measurement. The instrument will capture the peak sound level and display it on LCD. Time elapsed also displayed on LCD until 99 hrs 59 mins 59 secs. Press DOWN button to end the measurement. From left to right. Before measuring > in measuring > end by pressing DOWN button. Note Before ending the measurement by pressing DOWN button, the only actions user can perform are to record data by pressing REC/MEM button and to pause the measurement by pressing START/ PAUSE button. 18

19 Measure RT60 (Reverberation Time) Definition The time it takes for the Sound Pressure Level to fall by 60 db after the sound has been turned off. 60 db corresponds to a decrease in sound pressure by a factor of Measuring reverberation times also enables the calculation of the total Sound Absorption of a room. The reverberation time varies with frequency. Parameters to be measured RT60: The time it takes for the Sound Pressure Level to fall by 60 db after the sound has been turned off. Operation Press FUNC button to select RT60 mode. Default is A weighting and Fast. Press START/PAUSE button to start the measurement. The instrument captures the first value larger than 90 db and display in MAX. It calculate and display the target value in MIN by subtracting 60 db from MAX. The instrument start counting the reverberation time. Press DOWN button to end the measurement. From left to right Before measuring > In measuring > end measuring either by pressing DOWN button or upon the determination of reverberation time. 19

20 RT60 calculator Reverberation time is estimated with the empirical formula RT60 = ( x V ) / SA where V is the volume of the room in m 3 and SA is the total absorption. ST-109 and ST-107S provide the calculator for quick estimation RT60 for a given space. Press SET button under RT60 mode. Use UP or DOWN button to enter value of V. Press SET button and use UP or DOWN button to enter value of SA. Press SET button and the estimated RT60 displayed. From left to right Enter V > Enter SA > Estimated RT60 Note Before ending the measurement by pressing DOWN button, the only actions user can perform are to pause the measurement by pressing START/PAUSE button. 20

21 Input & Output Input interface External microphone can be connected to the instrument through a 4 pin PLT connector. The pin mapping and the definition are listed below. Pin ST-109/ST-107S ST Power (+) Power 2 GND GND 3 Power (-) NC 4 GND NC Microphone extension cable To practice remote measurement, the microphone can be extended by a cable designed to reduce the reflection effect to improve the quality of remote measurement. Turn off the instrument by pressing POWER button. Detach the preamplifier and microphone from the main body by turn it counterclockwise. Connect the microphone and main body with the cable. 24 Safety, Handling, & Maintenance Important safety information WARNING: Failure to follow these safety instructions could result in fire, electric shock, or other injuries, or damage to sound level meter or other property. Read all the safety information below before using sound level meter. Operate Avoid using instrument in humid or wet places. Make sure that humidity is within the limits indicated in the next section. Avoid using meter in presence of explosive gas, combustible gas, steam or excessive dust.. Be sure to turn it off after use. If you expect not to use the instrument for a long period remove batteries to avoid leakages of battery liquid which could damage the its inner components. Handling Handle the meter with care. It is made of sensitive electronic components. The meter can be damaged if dropped, burned, punctured, or crushed, or if it comes in contact with liquid. Don t use a damaged meter, such as one with a cracked screen, as it may cause injury. Important handling information Cleaning Clean instrument immediately if it comes in contact with anything that may cause stains such as dirt, ink, makeup, or lotions. To clean: Disconnect all cables and turn instrument off. Use a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. Don t use cleaning products or compressed air. Operating temperature The instrument is designed to work in ambient temperatures between 5 and 40 C (41 and 104 F) and stored in temperatures between -10 and 60 C (14 and 140 F). The instrument can be damaged and battery life shortened if stored or operated outside of these temperature ranges. Avoid exposing the instrument to direct sunlight even the the air temperature is within the limits. Operating humidity The instrument is designed to work in humidity < 80%rh and stored in dry place where humidity is less than 70%rh. Store microphone carefully Microphone is the key component of the instrument and keep it dry and avoid severe shake or vibration. 24

25 Battery replacement Low battery icon displayed in LCD indicates the user needs to replace batteries. To replace: Turn off the instrument. Remove the battery cap. Insert new batteries and then put the cap back. Process the waste batteries accordingly. 26 Warranty & Services Warranty conditions This instrument is guaranteed for one year against material or production defects, in accordance with our general sales conditions. During the warranty period the manufacturer reserves the right to decide either to repair or replace the product. Should you need for any reason to return back the instrument for repair or replacement take prior agreements with the local distributor from whom you bought it. Do not forget to enclose a report describing the reasons for returning (detected fault). Use only original packaging. Any damage occurred in transit due to non-original packaging will be charged anyhow to the customer. The warranty doesn t apply to: Accessories and batteries (not covered by warranty) Repairs made necessary by improper use (including adaptation to particular applications not foreseen in the instructions manual) or improper combination with incompatible accessories or equipment. Repairs made necessary by improper shipping material causing damages in transit. Repairs made necessary by previous attempts for repair carried out by non-skilled or unauthorized personnel. Instruments for whatever reason modified by the customer himself without explicit authorization of our Technical Dept.
