1 DP-PS Laboratory Diode Driver (For use with MK-11, 81, 82, 85, & 88 lasers) Kigre manufactures a laboratory laser diode driver for use with the MK-88, 85, 82, 81 and MK-11 laser heads. The driver features precision pulsed current operation and supports the HESP family eye-safe laser diode requirements. A USB cable and software are provided so that the customer may use their computer as a laser controller. The driver accepts 20 to 30 volts DC and includes a convenient AC/DC power adapter for universal VAC operation. The driver also includes ultra-high performance hold-up capacitors for stable pulsed current control up to 110 Amps. Soft-start control, active current limiting, transient filtering, and a mechanical shorting relay provide robust protection for the laser. 2 Computer Laser Control Software The DP-PS computer laser control software version # provides a readymade repetition rate generator with burst and shot count features. Use the cursor or keyboard to set the proper repetition rate for your laser. Use the cursor or keyboard to set the proper number of shots (burst count) for your application. Select START to begin firing the laser and STOP to stop firing the laser. You may stop firing the laser during a burst count-down at any time by pressing the stop button. The software provides a count-down of the remaining number of shots in the burst. The DP-PS computer control software may be operated at any pulse repetition rate setting from 1 Hz to 10 Hz. The software allows for both pulse rep-rate and current adjustment. With the pull down menu, the current scale is adjusted to a maximum of 110 amps. The DP-PS laser driver requires a Windows based computer for laser operation. Kigre does not supply a computer with the DP-PS laser driver.

3 Front Panel 1. Press the center of the green LASER ARMED power button to arm the laser (the green LED will turn on). The laser must be considered armed when this button is in the on (pressed-in) position. The laser is disarmed when this button is in the off (flush) position. 2. The EXTERNAL FIRE INPUT is optically isolated for your convenience. To fire the laser via this BNC connector, simply input a 2-30 volt pulse, 500uS to 3mS in duration. The laser pump pulse will begin on the rising edge of this input signal. The BNC connector is: Amphenol # RFX. The schematic is shown below:

4 Front Panel (Continued) 3. The LASER SYNC OUTPUT is a 5V, 1mS output pulse capable of driving up to a 50 ohm load (load must be 50 ohms or higher). The rising edge of this pulse is synchronized with the laser output pulse (if photodiode feedback is being used) and coordinates with the turnoff of the pump current. The BNC connector is: Amphenol # RFX. The schematic is shown below:

5 Rear Panel 1. The laser is connected to the LASER combo D-sub connector. The connector is Amphenol # L77TWA7W2S. The higher power pins (A1 and A2) are Amphenol # L17DM The red wire connects to Pin A1 The black wire connects to Pin A2 The blue wire connects to Pin 1 The yellow wire connects to Pin 2 The other pins are not used. 2. The USB connector can be connected to a Windows computer using a standard USB Type A/B cable. Firmly push the cable end into the USB port on the driver and connect the other end to the computer. Please refer to the Laser Control Software section (above) for details on installing and operating the computer laser control software. The recommended cable is Emerson # (6 foot length). 3. The recommended FUSE is a 6.3 amp SLO-BLO, size 5x20mm. Littelfuse # HXP. The fuse holder is Littelfuse # H. The actual AC input current will depend on the AC line voltage and the firing rate (duty cycle) of your application. 4. The 24VDC INPUT power connector is Switchcraft # 722A. This power jack has a diameter center pin. The center pin is positive and the outside ring is the return. The input voltage range is 20 to 30 volts DC. A recommended AC/DC adapter is: Cincon # TR70A24 (24Vdc, 3.0A, VAC input ~ 1.5Aac, 50-60Hz.

6 Kigre Laser Control App (for Android) The free Kigre Laser Control app works with Android phones and tablets running version 2.0 (Eclair) or newer. The app is available free of charge from the Google PLAY store. Phone Laser Controller! FREE KIGRE APP DOWNLOAD 1. Install the Kigre laser application on an Android phone. 2. Apply power to the Kigre driver (to activate the Bluetooth receiver). 3. For Bluetooth, you will need to pair the driver board with the phone. In Settings, go to Wireless and networks then Bluetooth settings. Make sure Bluetooth is on then click Scan for Devices. You will see IOIO (xx:xx) where xx:xx will change based on the BT module. The passcode is Although the phone will now indicate Paired but not connected, the Kigre Laser app is now ready to use. Exit the settings menu. The Kigre unicorn icon is installed in the applications folder. 4. Tap on the Kigre unicorn logo icon to run the application. If the driver board has been properly detected, you will be able to select the firing rate. Do not exceed the maximum firing rate of the laser. Press Start to begin firing and Stop to end firing. 5. Note: the Bluetooth module is a Class 2 device with a range of approximately 10 meters.

7 Additional DP-PS Features The Kigre DP-PS driver is optimized for the Kigre DPSS family of lasers. The driver provides 100A square pulses of current (up to 3mS) with typical I/O efficiency of ~ 90%. Features include reverse input voltage and current protection, under-voltage (UVP) and over-voltage (OVP) protection and soft-start input current ramp-up for battery applications. Advanced laser diode protection, external photodiode bias (for pump-current shutoff), and short-circuit output protection are also included. INPUT PROTECTION STEP-UP CONVERSION ENERGY STORAGE CURRENT CONTROL OUTPUT PROTECTION The Kigre DP-PS includes Kigre s high efficiency, switch mode current control board, model # C823. 8 Engineering Notes: Customers that have purchased Kigre, Inc. HESP laser products are provided complimentary electrical engineering support to facilitate HESP laser integration and use. This includes access to diode driver schematics, surface mount board vendors, parts list, and power supply design support. Most Kigre, Inc. HESP lasers contain a built-in photodiode that is used to turn off the pump pulse as soon as the laser pulse is emitted. The laser's photodiode signal may also be used as a To (time zero) for a range counter or other event timing. The pump pulse-width is typically between 1.5 and 2.5ms depending upon the laser head's temperature and operating conditions. We time out the pulse at a maximum of 3.4ms for safety to prevent the pump diodes from runaway CW operation. Laser pump pulses greater than 3ms are near the point of diminishing returns with regard to laser output energy and system efficiency. A useful method for monitoring the laser's internal temperature is to look at the pump current pulse width. Specifically, this pulse width should not exceed 3 milliseconds. You'll notice that the pump pulse width will increase as the laser heats up. This is due to the loss of efficiency. Once the pump pulse width gets beyond 3mS, the efficiency of the laser drops dramatically and the pump pulse width will rise quickly - indicating an overheated condition. Please do not operate the laser if the pump current pulse width exceeds 3mS. We suggest the use of a Tektronix model # A622 probe. The probe should be located between the driver and the laser. You can clip on a section of the red wire anywhere in the laser cable.
