2 VDC G - G 4-5 G 6-7 G - Introduction The following is a general overview of the electrical-mechanical specifi cation for the Radial Workhorse power frame, mixer section and modules. This specifi cation is presented as a means to allow manufacturers to produce designs that are compatible with the Workhorse frame, mix buss and proprietary Omniport. The Workhorse itself has been designed to be compatible with the original API specifi cation and follows the fundamentals as employed by the Alliance. At the end of this document you will fi nd a form to fill out. When you return your signed copy of the release, please attach a copy of this form. Manufacturers that have done so will then be listed on our web site for easy cross reference to provide users with a list of compatible devices. This open source philosophy comes from our belief that as an industry, we are all better served when products gain compatibility. 3 Power Supply The power supplied to the module is /- 16V as per the original API specifi cation. The Workhorse power supply is an external switching device that accepts 100V to 240V input and outputs 1600mA (milliamps) to supply the unit plus a separate 48V (100mA) feed for phantom power. The Workhorse mixer consumes 400mA leaving 1200mA for powering the modules. A shared power approach allows the user to mix and match various manufacturer modules so long as the overall power draw does not exceed the 1200mA limit. In order to facilitate user interfacing and ensure maximum enjoyment when using your product in the Workhorse, we recommend that single modules do not draw more than 150mA and double wide modules should not draw over 300mA. This will help the user avoid experiencing distortion due to excessive power draw. To ensure maximum circuit effi ciency, we recommend that LED meters should use a series LED confi guration to keep current consumption low. Relays in modules with indicator LEDs should have their LEDs in series with the relay coil. We suggest 24V coil relays be used for greater effi ciency. We further recommend that module designs include a resettable fuse in series with each of the three power inputs. Components such as the Bourns CMF-RL series or a Raychem Polyswitch rated not over 200mA can be used per single wide module and these fuses be scaled according to the power draw. Otherwise, an excessive current draw in a module, beyond the power supply s rated capacity could result in a power disruption to all the modules. Please include a maximum current draw specifi cation in the module owner s manual and in specifi cations to make it as easy as possible for the consumer. Module Size (see mechanical details) The Workhorse is designed to accommodate all typical 500 series modules. In order to take full advantage of the Workhorse design, we recommend that manufacturers design their modules following the sizes suggested later in this document. For instance, if the module is made the full width of the front plate, it will not fi t in between the guide tabs in the Workhorse. This will force the user to remove the guide tray. Note: The Workhorse is designed to accommodate double wide modules without removing the guide tray in slots 5/6 and 7/8. Although not necessary, we recommend that manufacturers employ a shielding case around their module to help reduce induction or electromagnetic propagation. Good practices will not only ensure your module does not pollute others, but will help keep noise down. This will of course provide greater enjoyment for the end user. Grounding Following the AES Specifi cation, Pin-1 connections of the Workhorse rear panel XLR connectors are permanently connected to chassis ground. The ground of these cannot be lifted. The chassis ground is then connected to pin-1 of the card edge connector to allow for a direct chassis ground to any XLR or other balanced connectors a manufacturer may see fi t. A ground lift switch may be added to the module at the manufacturer s discretion. The modules themselves have two separate ground paths: an analog ground on Pin-5 and a power ground on Pin- 13. These are routed separately through the backplane and are joined at the power input connector. The analog ground must only be used for grounding actual audio signal. The power ground could be used for anything where a ground is needed that does not carry audio. They should not be tied together within a module. The power load for each module should be balanced as much a possible between the positive and negative supplies. Especially loads that switch on and off such as LEDs and relays. Operating these loads from rail to rail (not through ground) will result in less ground induced noise. Pg. 3 of 10

4 Card-edge Connector Specification The following details the pin confi guration as used in the Workhorse. The Old refers to the published API/ specifi cations. The Current refers to popular racks currently being sold in the marketplace. The New is the Radial standard as employed in the Workhorse. Pin-3 has been left open because sometimes it is paralleled with Pin- 2. This arrangement eliminates problems between other modules. During our investigation, we have found that sometimes pins 7 and 9 are paralleled with pins 8 and 10, so the Omniport jack should not interfere. The module designer may supply whatever signal they wish to this pin as long as there is a 4K7 or 4K75 resistor in series with it. Isolation is not required as long a there is no DC on the signal output at this pin. This output from the module is connected to the inverting (virtual earth) input of an op amp (in the mix section of the rack) with a 4K75 feedback resistor. This is called a Virtual Earth Mix Buss. It is low noise and is less prone to problems. We chose 4K75 because it tends to have lower noise than a higher value and because the Rupert Neve Designs Portico series employs a 4K7 Mix Buss on all of their modules. This provides cross-compatibility between Radial and Rupert Neve Designs. Omniport Omniport is a simple ¼ TRS non-shorting jack that is mounted on the rear panel of the Workhorse. Each of the eight card slots is equipped with this TRS port. The intent with the Omniport is to allow the design engineer to develop creative applications for their modules by adding application-specifi c functions using the Omniport in their designs. The card-edge Pin-7 (Ring) and Pin-9 (Tip) have been assigned to the Omniport and can be designed as an input, output, footswitch, control voltage, insert, etc When the Omniport is used as an insert, we employ the tip send - ring receive standard. If used as a balanced connection, the tip is hot. The application is only limited to one s imagination as to the function that best relates to a given module. 6 MECHANICAL SPECIFICATION: MODULE LID The following is a general overview of the mechanical specifi cations for the module lid. A space has been left open at the rear to allow the PCB card-edge to protrude. This also allows easy access to function switches mounted on the PCB at the top and bottom of the card-edge as shown on page 8 (module circuit board drawing). This would be cut out for functions and attached to the module tray. Paint thickness must be considered when designing the front plate to ensure easy fi t. Should the designer wish to add secondary hidden functions we recommend positioning the switches at the rear with function switch #1 at the top to follow the approach we have taken. What this means is that the information is available and offered free of charge, but does require the user (Recipient) to be registered. Do not worry; the registration merely protects Radial s brand names, trademarks and liability and ensures that in the event that trade secrets are divulged, you will not pass them along to someone freely.
