1 VCM Systems Vehicle Control Module Systems Technical Manual VCMS-SC (Standard Configuration) Switch Panel System The Model VCMS-SC Switch Panel System is a standard configuration of the VCMS product family that contains certain options. This configuration includes a Model VCMS-SM6 Switch module (six switch positions), a Model VCMS-PM1 Power module and a Model CA-VCMS-2 Logic Cable. When placing an order you will need to specify the complete model number and supply a list of desired switch legend descriptions (See Section 5. Ordering Guide). Copyright of 12

3 1. Introduction and General Description This document provides a comprehensive technical description of the InPower Model VCMS-SC Switch Panel System. Note that this system is a standard configuration of the Vehicle Control Module System (VCMS) family, a modular, expandable control system for vehicle applications. The Model VCMS-SC Switch Panel System consists of a six-position switch module and a remote six output power module. It is used in applications that require the driver to operate auxiliary vehicle 12 volt devices such as interior and exterior lights, heaters, warning lights, beacons, pumps, etc. The switch module s thin profile (½ Inch thick) allows it to be mounted in many locations. Its back lighted push buttons allows easy night viewing. Each push button position contains a status LED that indicates if the switch is on or off. Switch legends are selected from InPower s VCMS Switch Module Legend Library (See document TB-59). When ordering specify the desired legend number for each switch position. The system s power module is remotely located from the switch module and connected with a communications logic cable. This cable is available in standard lengths. The power module contains six 12 volt 15 amps outputs for powering the auxiliary loads. The switch module positions activate their respective power module outputs (SW1=Output 1, SW2=2, etc.). Each switch position can be set up to operate as a two-position latching (push to turn on, push again to turn off) function or as a momentary (turned on only when button is pressed) switch. An input (I-1) is provided on the power module and is connected to the Ignition Switch On power. This ensures that the ignition switch must be on in order to activate any power module output. The switch module s back lights are also activated when the ignition switch is in the on position. 4 2. Switch Module 2.1 General Description The system contains a Model VCMS-SM6 Switch Module containing six push buttons. The anodized aluminum case design features a low profile measuring only 0.55 inches. It is mounted to a flat panel via four 0.70 inch long 6-32 threaded studs. The module contains a 10-position connector on the rear for the logic communications cable connection. The case design is a two piece clam shell held together by two screws on each side. The module can be disassembled quickly for installing or changing switch legends by removing the four screws and separating the case. 5 2.1 General Description (Continued) Each switch position can be set up as a momentary, latching (Off-On1), or 3-step (Off-On1-On2) function. The switches are continuously monitored by the switch module controller. When a switch is depressed the controller sends the status of that switch to the power module via the logic communications cable. The power module then carries out the task defined in the application program s logic (e.g., sets a designated power output if the ignition switch input is set). If the switch was programmed as a momentary function the switch output and the status LED will remain activated for the time the switch is activated. If the switch was programmed as a latching function, pressing the switch the first time sets the switch output and status LED. Pressing the switch the second time turns off the switch output and status LED. If the switch was programmed as a 3-step function, pressing the switch the first time sets the first switch position output (On1). Pressing the switch the second time turns off the first output and turns on the second output. Pressing the switch the third time turns off the second output (On2). This operation provides the equivalent of a three position switch. 2.2 Switch Legends A key feature of the Vehicle Control Module System (VCMS) is its custom switch legends. Each push button switch can have a unique legend describing the switch s function. InPower has developed a library of standard legends to choose from. (See InPower document TB-59.) If a desired legend cannot be found in the library a custom legend can be created. When ordering a system you need to specify the desired legend from the library or specify the special legend to be created. If ordering the VCMS with switch legends installed you will also need to specify the switch position of each legend. InPower has an Input/ Output Diagram worksheet to properly document the switch module s requirements (See Exhibit A). Switch legends may be ordered from InPower installed in the switch module or ordered separately for installation by the customer. This may be useful if the switch layout is not finalized when the VCMS is ordered. InPower can also provide a kit that allows customers to create and assemble their own switches. This kit contains a printer, special paper, switch caps and light diffusers. The Switch Modules design contains provision for easily installing or changing switch legends. Each push button switch contains a separate molded switch cap. Legends are printed on a special photographic paper and cut to size. The legend is then placed in the switch cap, followed by the light diffuser. No adhesive is required. Figure 4 through Figure 9 shows the assembly stages of the switches. Figure Power Module - Model VCMS-PM1 3.1 General Description The Model VCMS-PM1 Power Module contains six 12 volt power outputs, four digital inputs and a communications interface. The six power outputs are set from commands received on the communications interface from the Switch Module. The status of the four digital inputs are continuously sent via the communications interface to the Switch Module where the application program resides. Wiring terminations for the power outputs, digital inputs and the +12 volt supply utilize 0.25 inch faston blade terminals. The communications interface utilizes a 10-pin connector. A power module diagram is shown in Figure Power Outputs The power module s six solid state outputs are high side drivers, each rated at amps. The outputs provide automatic shutdown protection for short circuit and overload conditions. Three +12 volt terminals (BAT) are provided for the incoming battery power. Note that all six power switches are powered from a common 12 volt bus that is connected to the three +12 volt power terminals. To achieve the maximum power module current rating all three 12 volt power inputs must be connected to battery power through individually fused 15 amp feeds. These signals are voltage levels between zero volts (chassis ground) and battery voltage. Typically these inputs are from a contact closure such as a switch to either ground or +12 volts. The VCMS application program defines each input as actuated by either a ground or +12 volt input. The program for the VCMS-SC Switch panel System uses input I-1 to monitor the Ignition Switch status so it is activated by a +12 volt signal. 9 3.4 Communications Interface The power module contains a communications interface with a ribbon cable connector. This interface allows the power module to connect to the switch module. 3.5 Wiring Terminations All power module wire connections utilize male 0.25 inch faston blade terminals. Wire connections to the power module should use insulated faston terminals, either straight or right angle type. 3.6 Power Source Wiring Power modules require a +12 volt battery power source. Its internal circuits obtain the +12 volts power from an internal power bus that connects to the three BAT terminals. In order to utilize the full output capabilities of the power module, three 15 amp fused power supply wires must be connected to the three BAT terminals. Also note that if this +12 volt power supply is directly connected to the battery (without a power disconnect), there will be a small power draw of approximately 16 milliamps when all outputs are off and the switch module s indicator LEDs and back lignting are off. 10 4. Logic Interconnection Cable A communications function is required to pass information between the switch module and power module. A cable system is used to connect the communications interface circuit on the switch module with the one on the power module. A ribbon type cable is used with a connector at each end. Cables are specified with the number of connectors required and the cable length between each connector. The Model VCMS-SC Switch Panel System uses a Model CA-VCMS-2 cable with the length of cable between the two connectors specified on the order. 5. Ordering Guide A Model VCMS-SC Switch Panel System is a standard configuration of the VCMS product family that contains certain options. The configuration includes a Model VCMS-SM6 Switch module (six switch positions), a Model VCMS-PM1 Power module and a Model CA-VCMS-2 Logic Cable. When placing an order you will need to specify the model number and a list of desired switch legend descriptions. 5.1 Model Number Coding The model number will be coded as follows: VCMS Product Family Standard Configuration Cable Length: 5-5 ft ft ft. Refer to InPower Technical Bulletin TB-59 for a list of standard legends. Next prepare a table showing the switch position, legend wording and legend reference number. If a standard legend is not available indicate that a custom legend is required. The following is an example of a switch legend table. 11 6. System Expansion Central to the VCMS product philosophy is that wide range of system configurations can be created at a very modest cost. The VCMS-SC Switch Panel System described in this document is a basic configuration intended to meet the needs of many vehicle applications. Many customers will find that this system meets their needs. However, many other customers will find that they need additional functions. As VCMS is a programmable, modular and expandable product it can be configured to meet those additional functions. The scope of this document does not allow a comprehensive explanation of the range of functions available but some examples of it expandability can be described. Switch Modules - Standard switch modules are available in 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 switch positions. Special configurations can also be accommodated. Power Modules - If more power outputs or digital inputs are needed additional VCMS-PM1 Power Modules can be added to the system. Dual Switch Modules - A VCMS can be configured with two switch modules in a Master/Slave arrangement. The two switch modules can be installed in different locations and can contain overlapping switch functions (The same switch functions on both modules). Also, the switch modules may contain different number of switch positions. Battery Voltage Monitoring - If the application requires monitoring battery voltage to carry out control tasks a version of the VMCS-PM1 Power Module is available with a voltage sensing input. The ability to detect battery voltage set points can be used for load shedding. Current and Voltage Monitoring - The VCMS-APM Analog Power Module contains a current sensor input for measuring DC current. This input utilizes InPower s DCS35 Series current sensors to measure current ranges from ±100 amps to ±600 amps. This feature can be used to detect battery discharge conditions or minimum or maximum current limits. This module also contains four power outputs rated a amps, three digital inputs and a battery voltage sense input. Control Logic Functions - The VCMS application program contains a great deal of flexibility for performing control logic functions. Examples include performing tasks based on logical OR, AND and THEN conditions, status of external devices (Ignition Switch On, vehicle in PARK, etc.), time delays, flashing outputs, voltage and current sensing, and controlling switch module back lighting, to name just a few.
