Wiring Power Supply The PB display requires an external 8 to 34 volts DC power supply. Power requirements will depend on which model is being used. The power requirements shown below are for maximum power with all LED pixels ON, bright white. Wiring must meet facility, local, and state requirements and regulations. PB Display Power Requirements PB25 12watts 8-34Vdc PB50 24watts 8-34Vdc PB100 48watts 8-34Vdc Grounding The PB display ground (GND or DC-) must be connected to a single point ground. A common ground reference, Earth ground, is essenal for long term proper operaon. The ground lead of shielded cable and the power supply must be properly connected to Earth ground. Communications Status LED Connector Cover Screw Terminal Block Figure 1. Remove the connector cover to gain access to the fi eld wiring screw terminal block. Serial Port An RS-232 or RS-485 serial port is required for display configuraon and oponally modbus communicaons. Configuraon and modbus share the same serial port. Configure the display using the Configurator App soware before placing the display into service. Always remove power before installing or removing the mode jumper. For RS-232 communicaons only transmit, receive, and ground are required. The jumper next to the screw terminals should be installed to select RS-232 mode. A DB-9 female connector can be wired to the screw terminals to make a convenient configuraon port. The female DB-9 can then be connected to your configuraon PC. A USB-to-serial converter can also be used if your PC does not have an RS-232 serial port. For RS-485 communicaons you will need to connect to the RX-A and TX-B screw terminals and remove the jumper. 4 RS-485 Network Bus Termination Aer configuring the PB display it can be connected to an RS-485 network bus. An RS-485 bus consists of mulple RS-485 devices connected in parallel to a bus cable, usually a shielded twisted pair. To eliminate line reflecons, each cable end is terminated with a terminaon resistor whose value matches the characterisc impedance of the cable. This method, known as parallel terminaon, allows for higher data rates over a longer cable length. PB series displays do not provide isolaon between the RS-485 port and power supply ground. The GND terminal is internally connected to the power supply DC- terminal. Communications Status LED The communicaons status LED is located next to the screw terminals and is only visible when the connector cover is removed. See Figure 1 for LED locaon. While the displays serial port is receiving the LED will be green. The LED will be red while the displays serial port is transming. IN-1 and IN-2 - Digital If IN-1 or IN-2 is not being used as an analog input they can be used as digital inputs to perform various funcons. The available funcons depends on the display type and input source being used. Digital inputs can be configured to be acve high or acve low using the configurator app. The digital inputs have an internal 10K ohm pull-up resistor to 5 volts so an open input will read as a high and pulling the input to GND will read as a low. Figure 4 shows various digital input connecon methods. For type bar, stacked bars, and background scale the inputs can be configured to clear the min/max ck marks. If the input source is mer or counter, IN-1 or IN-2 can reset or stop the mer or counter. Also if the source is a counter then IN-1 or IN-2 can be used as the count event input. For annunciator display type the inputs can control annunciator 1 and or annunciator 2, acve high or acve low. If IN-1 or IN-2 is controlling a annunciator the digital input has priority over the coil or PB register value. Figure 4. Typical IN-1 or IN-2 connections for digital inputs IN-1 and IN-2 - Analog If the input source is set to Analog, IN-1 or IN-2 input will be configured to read the input voltage using a 10-bit analog to digital converter. Maximum voltage range is 0 to +10 volts. Scaling and calibraon is done using the configurator app from the input source dialog. Figure 5. Typical connections for IN-1 or IN-2 when used as analog input. Add a resistor to convert loop current to a voltage. 4

Mounting The PB enclosure includes mounng slots on the sides and back of the display designed to fit a standard #10 carriage bolt providing mounng opons for surface, panel or pipe mounng. Insert the head of the bolt into the round opening at the boom of the slot. Align the square shoulder of the bolt with the slot and then slide the bolt into the slot. Adjust the posion to fit your installaon. Figure 6. Inserting mounting screws. The PB display may be mounted vercally or horizontally. When mounted vercally the connector cover should be on the boom of the display. When mounted horizontally allow for a drip loop in the cable near the connector cover. When choosing a mounng locaon verify that the display viewing angle and posion are adequate before permanently mounng. Display mounng should be done by qualified personnel only. Setup and verify the display operaon on a test bench prior to installaon. Never drill holes in any part of the display enclosure. Use the slots extruded in the enclosure for mounng. See Figure 6 for details. Mounng slots are designed to be used with standard square-neck carriage bolts. All Pixel Signs mounng brackets include the necessary mounng carriage bolts. 5

Select the COM number your converter or cable is connected to. Connecting to a modbus slave display By default the PB display will funcon as a modbus slave. As a slave the display will listen for commands from the PC app (modbus master). With the display power on, click the Connect buon to connect. The app will try the last used BAUD rate and parity sengs to try and complete the connecon. If the display is configured for different serial sengs the app will scan to determine the sengs to use. Figure 14. Connect dialog. Connecting to a modbus master display If your PB display has been configured for modbus master mode the display will be sending modbus commands, polling for data. Before the app can connect, master polling must be paused to allow the display to temporarily funcon as a slave. To connect to a display in master mode Remove PB display power 2. Click the Pause Master Polling buon on the Connect dialog 3. Apply power to the PB display to complete the connecon When display power is applied to a display in master mode the display will send a connecon packet to the configurator app at power on. When the app receives the connecon packet the app reply to the display will disable master polling unl power is again cycled. The PB display will funcon as a modbus slave unl display power is cycled. Aer making configuraon changes, cycle display power to restore modbus master polling. Figure 15. The app is listening for the display and will connect to the display after power is applied. Is modbus master enabled? It s easy to determine if your display is configured for modbus master polling. If the boom le pixel flashes green at power-on then modbus master polling is enabled for the le side. The boom right pixel will flash green if polling is enabled for the right side. If either or both flash green at power on then you will need to Pause Master Polling as described above to connect to the PB configurator app. Figure 16. This PB25 is confi gured to poll for left and right modbus variables. Pixels fl ash green at power on if the display is confi gured for modbus master mode. 11

As an example, the input type must be selected before seng the colors. Figure 18. Setup wizard dialog. 12

Display Types The first step in configuring the PB display is deciding on the display type to use for the le and right bars. Each side can be set independently or, if both are configured and scaled the same, will appear as a single bar. Figure 19. Display Type setup dialog. Bar Display Type Bar will display the input source value scaled to 0-100%. At 0% all pixels will be set to the background color and at 100% all pixels will be set to the bar value color. Stacked Bars The Stacked Bars display allows two values to overlay or be stacked in layers. The lower value will appear in front of the higher value. This makes it possible to view or compare two values on one bar; oil level on top of water level in a tank for example. Background Scale When the type is Background Scale the bar background is filled with colors to indicate specific operang ranges. You could set a range of pixels green as a safe or normal operang range with a yellow range above and below the safe range. The value is displayed by a single pixel overlaid onto the mulcolor background scale. Annunciator Signal Tower The Annunciator type displays on/off states for 1 to 8 discrete annunciators per side. This display mode funcons similar to a signal or light tower to provide event or status state informaon in a highly visible manner. 14 Left and Right Input Select an input source for the le and then right displays. It is possible to have both displays use the same input source. If your display type is Annunciator then the input source is set to PB register 2 for le annunciators or PB register 3 for right annunciators. Scale and filter response do not apply to annunciator displays. PB Register 0, 1 16-bit signed integer values. Use modbus command 6 or 16 to write to the PB register and update the display. PB Register 4-5, bit floang point values in standard AB-CD byte order format. Use modbus command 16 to write to the register pair and update the display. Analog (IN-1), (IN-2) Read the voltage applied to either IN-1 or IN-2. Input range is 0 to 10 volts. Timer A 32-bit floang point mer register with 0.1 second update intervals. The mer is located in PB register pair for le and for right in AB-CD byte order. The mer can be paused and reset using inputs IN-1 or IN-2. Refer to Setup IN-1 and IN-2 for details. Figure 20. Choose the displays input source, scale the input, and set the fi lter response. Events Counter The 32-bit floang point PB register pair for le and for right in AB-CD byte order. The value can be wrien using modbus command 16, saving to register pair in the same command or the count can be incremented, paused, or reset using IN-1or IN-2. Refer to Setup IN-1 and IN-2 for details. Scale Scale takes the input value from the input source and applies a gain and offset so that the value can be displayed as 0 to 100 percent. Enter the maximum input value and the bar value that this will represent. Enter the minimum input value and the bar value this will represent. Noce that it is possible to reverse the scale by having the maximum input value equal to 0% and minimum input value equal to 100%. When the type is set to Analog a calibraon procedure is used to read the minimum and maximum input values to determine an accurate scale. See the Analog Input Calibraon secon for details. Filter Response Filter response applies a digital filter to the input value to smooth a rapidly changing process. Seng filter response to 1 will remove the filter. Lower values will dampen or slow the input response. 14

Analog Calibration When the input source is set to Analog a calibraon sequence is used to accurately scale the input voltage. The procedure requires a minimum voltage (bar = 0%) and a maximum voltage (bar=100%) be applied to the analog input. For current inputs the same resistor that will be used when the display is put in service should be used for the calibraon. To calibrate apply the minimum input voltage to the analog input and then click Read Min. Aer an average value is read click Save to use the new ADC value to use for scale. Do the same for the maximum input voltage. Read Min and Read Max do not need to be done in any order but both need to be done for correct scaling. Aer both are done they will show a green indicator next to the buons. Click Save to update the display scale with the new values and close the dialog. Figure 21. Reading the minimum calibration voltage from IN-2. Figure 22. Analog calibration is complete. Read Max and Read Min have green indicators. 15

Stacked Bar - Input Sources When the display type is set to Stacked Bars there will be two inputs for each stacked bar display. Inputs must be the same type and have the same scale. Figure 23. Choosing input sources for Stacked Bar display type. Colors To configure a color pick a segment or feature to edit. When you hover your mouse over a segment the text under the PB graphic will describe the acve PB segment. When you click or pick the acve segment the color picker will display the sengs for that segment. The Red, Green, Blue sliders can be used to alter the color. Also the Quick Colors picker can be used to jump to a color seng. Right click on a Custom Colors box to save your custom colors. Click Close aer all color changes are done to close the dialog. Figure 24. Setting display colors for a bar display. 16

Value Tick Pixel Value Tick allows you to highlight the current input value on the bar. The value ck pixel tracks the top pixel of the bar value. Over-Range and Under-Range Pixels If the Over-Range pixel is enabled and the input value is higher than 100% (over-range) the top pixel at 100% will show the over-range pixel color. When the input returns at or below 100% either the bar color or background color, depending on the input value, will be shown. If Under-Range is enabled, and the input value is less than 0% (under-range) the boom pixel will show the under-range pixel color. Maximum and Minimum Pixels When enabled (checked), the Maximum and Minimum pixels will display the highest and lowest input values since they were last cleared. They can be cleared or reset using the Clear buon when seng colors. They can also be cleared by seng coil 34 for the le display or coil 50 for the right display using modbus command 5 or 15. Refer to the Modbus Coils registers secon in this manual for details on seng coils. Digital inputs IN-1 and IN-2 can be configured to clear the values also. Refer to Setup IN-1 and IN-2 for details. 20 Legends Legends for your PB display can be custom designed for your specific applicaon. Legend layout is done using the Legends>Create feature of the PB Configurator App. Also, Microso Word templates are available for maximum flexibility. Aer the design layout is complete the legends can be printed onto pre-cut label sheets using standard laser or inkjet printers. The labels are made of a tough UV weather resistant vinyl. For further durability a clear over-laminate is available. Legends require the oponal legend supports which aach to the sides of PB display. You can choose to have le, right, or both sides to have legends. Nameplate labels allow you to add a label to each legend as well as label the PB display. Refer to the PB Template Manual for specificaons addional informaon on using the custom printed legends. The manual is included with the labels and is available as a PDF download from 20

Display Values Registers This group of registers stores the value to be displayed. The input source register, 97 for the le display or 117 for the right display, determines which of value to use. Use modbus command 6 or 16 to update the values registers. Signed Integer Registers 0 and 1 are holding registers for 16- bit signed integers. When the integer input source is selected the value stored in register 0 or 1 will be scaled using the gain and offset and then filtered before being displayed. Floating Point Values Floang point values can be stored in register pairs to form a single precision 32-bit value. Modbus command 16 must be used to update both register values in a single command. The value is scaled using the gain and offset and then filtered before being displayed. IN-1, IN-2 ADC Values When the input type is set for Analog, the voltage applied to IN-1 or IN-2 is digized and the ADC result is stored in register 80 or 81. The value is scaled using the gain and offset and then filtered before being displayed. Events / Timer Values When the input source is set to mer, this register will increment every 0.1 seconds. If the input source is set for events the value will increment with each event from IN-1 or IN-2. The value is scaled using the gain and offset and then filtered before being displayed. Left Coils, Right Coils Registers The coils registers are bit manipulated values used for control and annunciators. The le side uses PB register 2 while the right side uses PB register 3. The register low byte contains the annunciator values (1=On and 0=Off). Use modbus command 5 to update a specific coil or command 15 to update a range of coils. Command 6 or 16 can also be used to update all 16 bits in a register. Count / Time Reset Coils Seng coil 32 or 48 will reset the mer or event count register to zero. Aer the register is reset this bit will be automacally cleared. You can also configure IN-1 or IN-2 to perform this funcon. Count / Time Stop Coils To stop counng events or stop the mer set coil 33 or 49. The mer and counter will not increment as long as this coil is set. Clear the coil to resume incremenng. IN-1 or IN-2 can be configured to perform this funcon. 21

Display Scale Registers For bar displays the engineering units value saved in the values registers, or read from the analog input is scaled and filtered to fit the 0 to 100% bar display. The le and right bars are scaled and filtered independently. Gain and Offset The gain and offset values are calculated by the configurator app when seng the input source. Values are entered for the engineering units minimum and maximum to be scaled to fit the 0 to 100 percent PB display. Engineering Units Registers These registers store the engineering units values used to calculate the gains and offsets. These registers are read by the configurator app when eding the input source parameters. Changing these registers will not calculate a new gain or offset. Bar Units Registers These registers store the values used to calculate the gains and offsets. These registers are read by the configurator app when eding the input source parameters. Changing these registers will not calculate a new gain or offset. Filter Response Aer the input value is scaled a filter response is applied to smooth or dampen the displayed value. A poron of the new value is applied to the previous value to produce the filtering effect. With a filter response of 1 the filter is disabled and 100 percent of the new value is used. If the filter response is 0.5 for example then 50% of the new value and 50% of the previous value are used. Lower filter response values will increase the filtering effect. The valid range is to 1 Range Registers The Range registers are used for the annunciator and background scale type displays. For annunciator displays these registers will hold the number of pixels for each annunciator and is determined by the PB display based on the number of viewable annunciators. For background scale displays these registers hold the percent of display for each range. Display pixels are filled from the 0 percent to 100 percent so the Low-Low range (Range 1) is required. If two background scale ranges are required then Range 2 value would be set to 100 and the display would fill from 0 to Range 1 with the range 1 color then (Range 1 + 1) to Range 2 or 100 percent with the range 2 color and Range 3 and Range 4 would not be used. 22

Colors Registers Colors associated with each part of a display are configurable and are stored in PB. All color sengs use the same format and fit into a 16-bit word. Modbus command 6 or 16 can be used to update the color values. Register values can be read using modbus command 3. Features / Display Type Registers 23

PB Settings Registers Modbus Port Settings The PB serial port sengs are saved in register 66. For RS-232 mode install the port jumper next to the field screw terminals. For RS-485 mode remove the jumper. Port Settings The high byte of register 66 sets the serial port BAUD rate and parity. If bit 7 is set then modbus master polling will be enabled on the next power on reset. Modbus master polling registers must be configured as part of the master setup. Modbus Master Registers When configured as a modbus master these registers set the polled slave addresses and registers to poll. The display can poll up to two slaves, reading register values from the modbus slaves and saving the values to PB data registers to be scaled, filtered and displayed. Polling Interval Register 68 is an integer value between 50 and 12,000 that sets the delay between modbus commands. Each count is equal to seconds. For a one second polling interval set this register to 200 (1 second /.005 = 200). Registers 70 and 72 high bytes set the display data type code and the low bytes set the slave address to poll. The PB display uses the data type code to know where to save the register data read from the polled slave. Seng the slave address to 0 will disable polling the variable.
