6 2 Installation procedures 2.1 System Requirements Personal computer: The QUANCOM boards are assigned to operate in IBM-AT compatible computers with 80X86 or compatible. (i.e. Pentium ) Bus: Your computer must have the corresponding bus. (USB) More Informations you find in "Technical hardware description" 2.2 Safety Precautions For the sake of your security and of a safe function of your new QUANCOM board mind the following advice: Before opening the computer please unplug it. Computer motherboards and components contain very sensible integrated circuit (IC) chips. You have to obey some precautions whenever you work on your computer to protect them against damage from static electricity. Use a grounded wrist strap before handling computer components. If you don t have one, touch both of your hands to a safely grounded object or to a metal object, such as the power supply case. Take components by the edges and try not to touch the integrated circuit chips, leads or circuitry. Place components on a grounded anti-static pad or on the bag that was sent with the component whenever the components are separated from the system. Modifications of the device made without express permission of QUANCOM, lead to the loss of warranty and certification. 2

7 2.3 Installation of the Board Switch on the PC, start operating system and connect the USB module with the USB port of the PC. 3

8 3 Technical Hardware Description 3.1 Module Information USBREL2 USBREL4 USBIN8 USB USB USB Bus Optocoupler Inputs Relays 8 galvanically isolated optocoupler inputs for 5V.. 30V signals ( USBIN8 ). Two or four floating SPST relays ( USBREL2 / USBREL4 ) Simple programming through QLIB API Simple connection through USB Up to eight modules of the same type on the same system Description Input-protection for up to 500V through optocouplers The QUANCOM USBOPTO-modules use galvanically isolated inputs and relays or isolated optocoupler outputs. Through the use of isolated in- and outputs the controlling system is well protected of i.e. voltage peaks. All inputs are optocouplers which are designed for alternating voltage, which means that the polarity of the input signal may be freely chosen. The voltage range of the input signal is 5V to 30V. LED s indicating status of each input and output signal You can read all input and output signal states through LED s located at the module. Each access to the module is also displayed with an LED and you can see its configuration state. 4

9 Functionality of the USBREL2 This module provides 2 SPDT relays. Both relays may switch up to 1A / 15W and is suitable for process controlling in measurement, control technology and automation engineering. 18 5 LEDs and Control Elements The state of each optocoupler input or relay output is signalled by a LED. The modules also have to LEDs which inidcate the status of the module itself. Power / Access LED ( green ) - Blinks when there is communication between the module and controlling software. Enumeration / Error LED ( red ) - Blinks fast fast if the module is not yet initialized by the driver. - LED is on if the module has been successfully intialized by the driver and is ready to use. - Blinks once a second if an error occured LED Behavior Module is not yet initialized by the driver the module has been successfully intialized by the driver and is ready to use. 19 6 Controlling the Modules There are severall ways to communicate with our modules. QCLI ( QUANCOM Command Line Interface ) The QCLI is a command line programm, designed for simple and fast access to the modules.when using QCLI no knowledgement in any programming language is needed to control our devices. QLIB ( QUANCOM Library ) The QLIB is an API that supports easy functions to control QUANCOM hardware with several programming languages and IDEs. The functions are equivalent for all supported programming languages. A high number of programming examples for all suported IDEs and programming languages is available. Visual Basic Testprogramm After installing the QLIB several precompiled Visual Basic examples are available for testing purposes. 15

20 6.1 QLIB ( QUANCOM Driver Library ) The QLIB, which stands for QUANCOM Driver LIBRARY, was developed with the target to allow the simple programming of all our data acquisition products under various operating systems. So it is easy to write an application that runs under the operating systems Windows Me/98/95 and Windows XP/2000/NT4.0. This driver interface is not limited to PC boards or other I/O adapters but is also targeted towards supporting the next product generations currently being developed. 21 6.1.2 Software Download The QLIB installation package is located on the shipped driver CD. The latest QLIB and driver version is always located on our website. 22 6.1.4 Communication with the USBREL2 / 4 The USBREL2 and USBREL4 provide 2, respectively 4 SPST relays that may switch charges up to 1A / 15W. First of all to communicate with the module a handle for the is needed. The handle is a return value of the function QAPIExtOpenCard. The two, respectively 4 SPST relays ( outputs ) may be controlled with the writing functions QAPIExtWriteDO1, or QAPIExtWriteDO8. QAPIPutDO is a more simple function to control the output channels. For this function no handle is required. Please note that it is only possible to use this function correctly if only one module is connected to the controlling system. By using the function QAPIExtSpecial and the corresponding job codes it is possible to execute card specific actions. If a function has been executed successfully it returns the expected return value. If using QAPIExtSpecial it returns the value depending on the used job code. To check whether an error occurred or not the function QAPIGetLastError was implemented. It should be called directly after a QLIB function. If more than one module of the same type is used in the same system, it is necessary to give each module a unique address from 0 to 7. This address may be configured by a dip switch located on the module or, if no dip switch is present by a small console tool called usb_modnr_set. This tool is located in the bin directory of the QLIB installation or may be downloaded from our website. The QLIB has to be configured correctly too. In the QLIB Configuration Utility in section setup activate the checkbox. The configured address is easily readable through the use of the QLIB function QAPIExtSpecial and the job code JOB_READ_DIP_SWITCH. 18

23 6.1.5 Communication with the USBIN8 The USBIN8 provides 8 optocoupler inputs that may acquire signals between 5V and 30V with a maximum input current of 20mA. First of all to communicate with the module a handle for the is needed. The handle is a return value of the function QAPIExtOpenCard. The state of the eight optocoupler inputs may be checked with the reading functions QAPIExtReadDI1, or QAPIExtReadDI8. QAPIGetDI is a more simple function to check the state fo the input channels. 25 6.2 QCLI ( QUANCOM Command Line Interface ) QCLI (QUANCOM Command Line Interface ) is a console based program that makes it possible to control QUANCOM hardware. Thus it is console based it is also possible to control QUANCOM hardware by using script languages. The following sample string shows how simple it is to control hardware by using QCLI. This sample switches the outputs 1,2 and 4 of a USBREL4 on. qcli USBREL4 out on 1,2,4 QCLI is located in the bin ( Windows ) directory after installation of the QLIB, or may be downloaed from our homepage.
