3 Data Bits 3 To specify the number of data bits that are sent in each transmission frame. 7 8* See also: Technical Reference

4 Honor DSR 4 To determine whether the printer uses the Data Set Ready (DSR) signal. DSR is one of the handshaking signals for most serial interface cables. Off* On All data received by the serial port is treated as valid data. Only data received while the DSR signal is high is treated as valid. The serial interface uses DSR to distinguish data sent by the computer from data created by electrical noise in the serial cable. This electrical noise can cause stray characters to print. Select On to prevent stray characters from printing.

5 Job Buffering 5 To specify whether the printer temporarily stores jobs on the hard disk before printing. Off* On Auto Does not buffer print jobs to the hard disk. Buffers print jobs to the hard disk. Buffers print jobs only if the printer is busy processing data from another input port. Note: Changing the Job Buffering menu item automatically resets the printer.

6 NPA Mode 6 To specify whether the printer performs the special processing required for bidirectional communication, following the conventions defined in the Network Printing Alliance (NPA) Protocol. On Off Auto* Printer performs NPA processing. If data is not in NPA format, it is rejected as bad data. Printer does not perform NPA processing. Printer examines the data to determine the format and then processes it appropriately. Note: Changing this menu item automatically resets the printer.

8 PCL SmartSwitch 8 To configure the printer so it automatically switches to PCL emulation when a print job received through the serial port requires it, regardless of the default printer language. On* Off See also: Printer examines data on the serial interface and selects PCL emulation if the data indicates that is the required printer language. Printer does not examine the incoming data. The printer uses PostScript emulation to process the job if PS SmartSwitch is On, or uses the default printer language specified in the Setup Menu if PS SmartSwitch is Off. 9 PS SmartSwitch 9 To configure the printer so it automatically switches to PostScript emulation when a print job received through the serial port requires it, regardless of the default printer language. 10 Robust XON 10 To determine whether the printer communicates availability to the computer. Off* On Printer waits to receive data from the computer. Printer sends a continuous stream of XONs to the host computer to indicate that the serial port is ready to receive more data. This menu item only applies to the serial port if Serial Protocol is set to XON/XOFF.

11 RS-232/RS To specify the type of serial communication. RS-232* RS-422 Note: Selecting RS-422 automatically sets Serial Protocol to XON/XOFF.

12 RS-422 Polarity 12 To establish the behavior of the positive and negative signals when using RS-422 serial communication. Normal* Reverse Uses default definition of one and zero. Reverses the definition of one and zero, thereby allowing a positive connection to a host computer negative terminal without changing the physical cable.

13 Serial Buffer 13 To configure the size of the serial input buffer. Disabled Auto* 3K to maximum size allowed Disables the serial port. Printer automatically calculates the Serial Buffer size (recommended setting). User specifies the Serial Buffer size. The maximum size depends on the amount of memory in your printer, the size of the other link buffers, and whether Resource Save is set to On or Off. To maximize the range for the Serial Buffer size, disable or reduce the size of the parallel, infrared, LocalTalk, and USB buffers. Note: Changing the Serial Buffer menu item automatically resets the printer.
