Introduction Orion's Benchtop Solid State ph System is comprised of the Model 620 microprocessor based Solid State ph Meter, and the Model 6165 SUREFLOW TM Solid State phuture TM ph Probe. Designed to be a reliable workhorse, this system is ideal for busy, multi-user, laboratory or plant environments, anywhere conventional glass ph electrode cleaning or breakage is a problem. The Orion Model 620 Meter is durable, compact, easy to use, and designed for use with Orion Solid State probes to provide fast, accurate, temperature compensated ph measurements in any environment. PH measurements are easy with the help of advances features such as autocalibration, user prompting, choice of 0.1, 0.01, and ph resolution, automatic temperature compensation, and diagnostic operator assistance codes. Record data via RS232 communication using the Model 900A Printer or computer. The Orion SURE-FLOW Solid State Probe features a completely non-glass sensing element making it ideal for virtually any sample matrix. Combined with the SURE-FLOW reference junction for easy cleaning, and "on-chip" temperature measurement, temperature compensated ph analysis becomes routine even in difficult samples ranging from viscous detergents to dirty waters and tomato paste to bread dough. 2 The Model 620 Solid State System utilizes solid state technology to measure ph and temperature. This is an active electronic one, where the potential developed at the sensing surface is dependent on the solution ph. This surface potential is measured with a transistor. The change in potential is translated to a temperature compensated ph reading by the meter. Due to these special characteristics of this system care must be taken to ensure that the device is handled properly: Always turn the meter off prior to connecting or disconnecting the probe. The system is protected against electrostatic discharge (ESD). However, as with any electronic device, care should be taken to prevent large static discharges from contacting the probe. A. Power Up Chapter 2 Using the Instrument Pressing the power key will turn on the meter. The entire display (all annunciators) will be displayed for 2 seconds. Next, the Model number, "620" will then be displayed for 2 seconds. Then the calibration buffer(s) used for any previous calibration will be displayed in the lower display field for 2 seconds. The calibration buffer indicator(s),, along the bottom of the display, will then light up and remain displayed along the bottom of the display, until a new calibration is performed. For example: If a one-point calibration had been previously preformed, the ph 7 buffer indicator will be displayed. If a two-point calibration with ph 7 and ph 4 buffer had been previously performed, the ph 7 and ph 4 indicators will be displayed. Once all power up procedures have been completed the meter automatically advances to measure mode. B. Instrument Check Out Procedure It is recommended this procedure be performed when the meter is received any time operation problems arise. This procedure verifies the proper operation of the Model 620 Meter. 1. With the power off, attach Orion Solid State ph Probe or to the meter. 2. Press power and quickly press yes to start the self-test. The meter automatically performs electronic and hardware diagnostic tests. 3. When the code 7 appears in the lower display field, press each key, including the power key. A numeric digit will be displayed upon each key press. 4. After the self-test is completed the meter will automatically shut off. To restart the meter press the power key. 5. If any problems are found during the self-test the meter will beep and the error will be displayed. C. SETUP Mode The SETUP mode is used to define, change or view meter operating parameters. While in the SETUP mode, the yes key is used to scroll through the menu without changing parameters and to enter new parameters into meter memory. The no key is used to scroll through options within each parameter. To exit the SETUP mode, press the mode key at any time. 3 Resolution The current ph resolution will be displayed. The default setting is two decimal places (i.e. ph 7.00). Press yes to agree with the setting or press no to change to 7.0, 7.000, etc., and then press yes to accept the desired setting. Slope The current electrode slope in meter memory will be displayed. The value is displayed as a percent of theoretical slope. The default setting is 100%. This function is for display purposes only. The value cannot be changes in the SETUP menu. To change the slope value perform at least two buffer calibration. Press yes to advance to next menu option. Print Function The current print function setting will be displayed. The default is off, "00" and "P" will be displayed. To change the value press no and "01" will be displayed. Press yes when the desired setting is displayed. Manual Buffer Option When the manual buffer option function is entered the current setting will be displayed as STD "57O" or SET "5E7" on the temperature display. When the "57O" option is selected, calibration may be performed with standard buffers, ph 4.010, and When the "5E7" option is selected, calibration may be performed with user defined buffers within the range of 0 to 14 ph. Chapter 3 Self-Test During the self-test the meter will display various codes corresponding to the section of the instrument being checked. If any problems are found an operator assistance code corresponding to the test that failed will be displayed. Note the code and press yes key to continue. See Table 1 under Operator Assistance Codes. Should an operator assistance code appear during self-test, check to make sure the solid state electrode is securely attached then repeat the test. If the problem persists contact ORION's Product Service Department at During the self-test the meter displays TEST, "7E57" in the main field and the number of the test in the lower field. Additional meter displays occur depending on the test being performed. NOTE: Ensure that the solid state electrode is securely attached to the meter sensor input prior to self-test. Test # Test Function\Display 1 Segment Display Checks meter display. Ensures that all segments are lit. 2 RAM Check Verifies the proper operation of the Random Access Memory. 3 External Input Checks the electrode input channel. An ORION solid state electrode must be plugged in for this test. 4 Internal Check Internal function test. 5 Internal Reference Checks the internal reference in the meter. 6 Ground Reference Checks the meter ground. 7 Keypad Test Checks that the keypad is functioning properly. During this test must be pressed at the "0" prompt. Press each key. As each key is pressed a number corresponding to each key press is displayed. When all keys have been pressed "ready" will be displayed. If no keys are pressed or there is a problem with a key the meter will recognize an error and display E-07. Press yes to continue. 4 8 Shutoff Test Checks the meter shutoff feature. The meter will shut down. To restart the meter press the power key. Operator Assistance Codes are used ti inform the user of an out-of-range value or meter problem. The following tables outline the operator assistance codes available in the Model 620 Meter. The meter has a self-test circuit which verifies proper electronic operation. During self-test a special series of codes, E-02 through E-08 indicate a problem with the meter hardware. E-08 Instrument Shutdown Error Table 2 Error # Error Explanation E-20 Out of Range 1. If this occurs when the electrode is out of solution, code will disappear when electrode is returned to solution. 2. Sample may be out of range. Check with buffer. 3. Recalibrate using fresh buffers. 4. Solid state electrode may need to be cleaned. 5. If the meter was not previously calibrated, an E-20 will occur. To clear this condition, calibrate the meter. E-22 Calibration Standard Error The ph values being measured are the same for two different buffers. 1. Press any key to acknowledge. 2. Check that two different buffers are being used and that the correct one is being measured. 3. Recalibrate using fresh buffers. (4 of 6)3/8/2004 8:02:09 AM

5 E-23 Bad Slope ph electrode slope no in the range of 70% to 130%. 1. Press any key to acknowledge. 2. Recalibrate using fresh buffers. 3. Refer to solid state electrode instruction manual for instructions on how to clean the electrode. E-25 Electrode not connected to Meter The solid state electrode is not firmly connected to electrode input. 1. Press power to turn meter off. 2. Detach and then reattach the solid state probe. Press power to restart the meter. E-29 Printer Error The meter is sending information to a printer and there is no printer plugged into the meter or printer is not turned on. 1. If a printer is being used check that the printer is connected properly. 2. If using the ORION Model 900A printer ensure the battery has been properly charged. 3. If no printer is being used, go to the SETUP menu and turn the printer off. E-31 Bad Value A value has been entered which is not within the acceptable range for that function. 1. Press any key to acknowledge. 2. Re-enter a new value within the allowable range. Chapter 5 Troubleshooting No Display No power to meter Press the power key. Check that the proper line converter is plugged in securely. Erratic Readings or Reading Out of Range Meter or electrode failure Follow the meter check out procedure in this manual. Check the electrode operation by following the instructions in the solid state electrode instruction manual. Ensure proper electrode connection to the meter.
