7 489 SR Generator Management Relay TM Protection The 489 Generator Management Relay is an economical choice for protection, metering and monitoring of synchronous or induction generators of 25, 50 or 60 Hz. It can be used in primary, backup and co-generation applications. Protection features include: Machine ault Protection A dual slope percentage differential element and an IOC element protect against machine faults during operation and through startup respectively. Dual slope percentage differential. I OPERATE (multiples of CT) OPERATE REGION Slope 2 = 20% Slope 1 = 10% Minimum Pickup = 0.10 x CT I RESTRAINT (multiples of CT) A2.cdr Stator Ground Protection In addition to a ground overcurrent element, the 489 compares the machine neutral voltage and ground current to determine if ground directional faults are within or outside the generator. 100% stator ground fault protection is provided through an overvoltage element and an adaptive element. Stator Thermal Protection The stator RTDs are monitored to provide stator thermal protection during running overload conditions. Additionally, the RTDs vote for high reliability. The thermal model overload curve may be biased by the current unbalance and/or the hottest stator RTD. Machine cooling is simulated using exponential decay of the thermal capacity used register. The thermal overload curve may also be used to provide start-up protection for an induction generator. unctional Block Diagram GENERATOR Trip Coil Supervision GN Q 50/27 51V 60L B 87G 50/51GN 27TN U 24 Output relays 86 RS22 RS485 RS Output relays Analog outputs Analog inputs 489 Application / Q B 50 50/51GN 51V 59 59GN/27TN 60L G Overspeed Distance Volts/Hz Undervoltage Inadvertent generator energization Reverse power/low forward power Bearing overtemperature (RTD) Bearing vibration (analog inputs) Loss of excitation (impedence) Loss of field (reactive power) Negative sequence overcurrent (I 2 t) Voltage phase reversal Stator thermal (RTD/thermal model) High-set phase overcurrent Breaker failure detection Offline overcurrent Ground overcurrent Voltage restrained phase overcurrent Overvoltage 100% stator ground VT fuse failure Ground directional Overexcitation (analog input) Overfrequency/underfrequency Electrical lockout Percentage differential Sequential tripping logic Trip coil supervision Synchronous Induction 80878E6.cdr 4

8 489 SR Generator Management Relay TM Bearing Protection Any of the 12 RTD inputs may be configured to monitor and protect against bearing overtemperature conditions. Two RTDs can vote to give higher reliability. Additionally, four analog inputs can be configured to monitor bearing vibration transducers. This provides alarm or trip functions perfect for smaller machines. Excitation System Protection elements include overexcitation, over and undervoltage. Alarm or trip functions may be activated by definite or inverse time curves. Loss of field protection is provided via loss of excitation and reactive power. Rotor Thermal Protection A definite time alarm and inverse TOC curve trip protect the generator rotor from overheating caused by negative sequence currents. The rating for both continuous and short time operation is defined by the equation: K=I 2 t. A variable reset rate provides a thermal memory of previous unbalance conditions. Negative sequence inverse TOC. Time (Seconds) K= Negative Sequence Current / Rated Current A2.cdr System Backup Protection Three voltage restrained overcurrent elements provide backup protection for system faults. The pickup level for the inverse time curves are adjusted in conjunction with the measured phase to phase voltage. Voltage restraint characteristic. Curve Pickup Multiplier Phase-Phase Voltage / Rated Phase-Phase Voltage A2.cdr High-set phase overcurrent provides backup protection for on or offline elements. If any individual phase current exceeds the pickup level, a trip will occur. Distance protection uses two zones of mho phase to phase protection (total of six elements), which is intended as a backup for primary line protection against internal and unit transformer faults. Sequential Tripping Logic During routine shutdown, and for less critical trips, the sequential trip function can be used to prevent overspeed. Turbine valve status is monitored via digital input. When the valve is closed, either low forward power or reverse power will trip the breaker once the generator output has fallen below the programmed level. Abnormal requency Alarm functions for over and underfrequency are included. If operator action is not taken to correct the situation, a trip will occur if conditions persist or become more severe. Operational ailures On a total or partial loss of the prime mover (if the power generated is less than the no-load losses of the machine), real power will start flowing back into the generator. The reverse power function can be set to trip the generator when it begins motoring. Accidental energization protection limits damage if the generator is accidentally placed online while it is shutdown. Overspeed Twenty-four VDC power is provided for mounting a probe or sensor near the shaft key or keyway, with an assignable digital input configured as a tachometer to monitor the probe output signal. The 489 can monitor speed via an assignable input. ROTATING SHAT SENSOR Monitoring Protection With breaker failure enabled when the 489 initiates a trip and generator current does not drop to zero after the pre-set time delay, a breaker failure alarm will occur. When the breaker is closed, the trip coil circuit monitors itself for a break in continuity, which triggers a trip coil monitor alarm. VT fuse failure triggers an alarm and disables features that use voltage measurements. Monitoring and Metering TO 489 DIGITAL INPUT E2.dwg The 489 features advanced metering and event recording functions which include: Metering unctions: Complete monitoring functions include: Current Voltage Power: kw kvar kva Energy use: MWh Mvarh Power factor requency our analog inputs Demand and peak demand functions include: Current Power: kw kvar kva 5

HELP Generator Management Relay 489 SR Generator Management Relay TM All measured quantities can be viewed on the front panel display, through the communications ports, or through one of the four analog outputs. Event Recording The 489 records and timestamps the last 40 events, their cause and last measured parameters. All tripping functions are classed as events. Alarm functions may be selectively chosen as events. All of the 489 event data may be accessed via the three communications ports or viewed on the front panel display to help with troubleshooting. Oscillography The 489 samples the current and voltage inputs at a rate of 12 times per cycle. These samples are stored in a configurable buffer up to 64 cycles long. The trigger position setpoint allows the user to define how much of the buffer cycles are pre and post trigger. The trace memory may be extracted from the relay through the communications ports. It may be displayed using the 489PC software provided with the relay. This allows the user to examine magnitudes and phase relationships of the measured signals when troubleshooting. Inputs and Outputs The 489 offers a multitude of connections for analog and digital input and output. Analog I/Os The four input channels monitored by the 489 can be used for functions such as the protection and monitoring of bearing vibration. The four output channels can be configured to any measured parameter. Digital Inputs Seven assignable digital inputs can be used for functions such as a tachometer for overspeed control. RTD Inputs Twelve RTD inputs allow the user to monitor both stator and bearing temperature. A voting feature allows two RTDs monitoring the same device to vote for high reliability. Output Relays The 489 has six output relays: one trip, three auxiliary, one alarm, and one self-test relay. LEDs on the front panel show the status of each output. User Interfaces Communications A front panel RS22 port and two rear panel RS485 ports support ModBus RTU and DNP.0 protocol. The RS22 port can transmit data at 9600 bps, while the two RS485 ports are variable from 00 to 19,200 bps. Data may be accessed from all three ports simultaneously and independently. All measured values are also available via the four analog outputs. A typical communications setup could include a programmable logic controller (PLC) using the four analog outputs for control functions. The front panel RS22 port could be used for local interrogation and troubleshooting. One of the 485 ports could be used to connect a DCS or SCADA system, for continuous online monitoring by the operations personnel. The second RS485 port could be wired to a modem, which would be used for off-site interrogation of the 489 by engineering personnel. Data is available from the 489 via three communications ports and four analog inputs. SCADA/DCS 489 PC Oscillography data can be displayed using the 489PC program. 15 DGP Digital Generator Protection Protection and Control The DGP is a Digital Generator Protection system for any size of AC generator driven by steam, gas or hydraulic turbine. A high degree of security is provided via extensive self-diagnostics and an optional redundant power supply. Protection features include: Current Unbalance The DGP protects the generator from heating caused by current unbalance, using a formula based on the negative sequence component of the stator current. A linear reset allows the machine to cool down, and an alarm function is operated by the negative sequence component. Stator Differential High-speed protection during internal phase-to-phase faults and three-phase faults is provided. This function can provide high-speed phase-to-ground protection provided the neutral of the machine is grounded or another machine operating in parallel is grounded. Anti-Motoring The DGP includes a one or twostep anti-motoring reverse power function with individual time delay adjustments. One step can be used for sequential tripping of the generator, in which the turbine is tripped first. This step is enabled when closing of turbine inlet valves is indicated by digital input. The trip sequence is then continued when its delay time elapses. The second step is intended to provide backup to the sequential trip. If the sequential trip is not enabled, the two devices can be used as two-step reverse power functions with independent timers. Ground Overcurrent This inverse overcurrent function can be used to detect stator ground faults in a high or low resistance grounded generator system. Time Overcurrent with Voltage Restraint Protection against prolonged generator contribution to a fault on the system is provided through a time-overcurrent function with voltage restraint, as part of the system backup protection. This function is controlled by a fault detector and a Voltage Transformer use ailure (VT) condition. Stator Ground Two overlapping zones provide stator ground fault detection in a high impedance grounded generator system. Zone 1 uses a fundamental frequency neutral overvoltage to cover about 95% of the stator winding, based on the pickup voltage setting. Zone 2 is based on comparing the third harmonic voltage at the generator neutral with the total third harmonic voltage generated. This function is designed to cover 15% of the neutral end of the stator windings, and is controlled by fundamental and third harmonic voltage thresholds. Together the two zones cover 100% of the stator windings. Alternatively, Zone 1 can be used as a generator-bus ground detector in a high-impedance grounded or ungrounded system. The DGP uses two overlapping zones to detect stator ground faults. Terminal end Neutral end Zone 1 (64G1) 95% Zone 2 (64G2) 15% A.CDR Loss of Excitation When a synchronous generator loses excitation, it acts as an induction generator: running above normal speed, operating at unctional Block Diagram 52G GEN. 16 DGP Digital Generator Protection reduced power, and receiving its excitation (vars) from the system. The DGP s loss of excitation function includes two mho characteristics featuring individually adjustable reach, offset, and time delay. The DGP will block this function if it detects a negative sequence voltage, which would indicate a VT, or an external VT signal. The first zone mho function can be set to detect severe cases of excitation failure with a short time delay. The second zone mho function can be set to detect all the excitation failure cases with a longer time delay setting. This permits system security during stable power system swing conditions. Overexcitation Protection Provided through a Volts/Hertz function with inverse and instantaneous time delay characteristics. The overexcitation protection includes trip and alarm functions computed for each of the threephase voltages. The trip function incorporates a user-configurable linear reset characteristic to mimic machine cooling. Over and Undervoltage The undervoltage function consists of a positive sequence undervoltage with a userselectable inverse or definite time characteristic. The overvoltage function consists of a positive sequence overvoltage with an inverse characteristic. A linear reset characteristic is incorporated for both functions. The overvoltage function can be used as a backup to the overexcitation. The undervoltage function also provides voltage phase reversal protection. Over and Underfrequency Up to four steps of protection are included, each with an adjustable time delay. The steps are controlled by an adjustable positive sequence voltage level. Voltage Transformer use ailure (VT) When a fuse failure is detected, the DGP will block tripping by the loss of excitation and TOC with voltage restraint functions, as they may continue operating with a loss of AC. Accidental Energization The DGP system uses internal logic to detect accidental energization of the generator. Configurable I/Os Two general purpose contact converter inputs allow easy connection of external trip or alarm contacts, permitting use of the event log and configurable outputs of the DGP. An optional input can be configured to disable all protections functions. Eight configurable output relays, four trip and four alarm, allow the user to select any desired combination of the functions. Output relays can be controlled remotely or locally through a secured authorization or hardwire jumper. The control functions of the DGP can operate output relays locally or remotely. Configurable Logic The DGP allows strategic modification of internal logic to favor either security or dependability. This can be accomplished either by software settings or automatically by a "Generator Offline" contact input. This feature allows disabling of selected functions when the generator is offline and modification of the Accidental Energization logic. Contact Expansion Unit The DEC 1000 unit is an intelligent contact expansion unit that provides an additional 11 output relays, five with contacts in C configuration, and six with normally open contacts. Eleven LEDs indicate operation of contacts, and a reset button tests and resets the unit. Available for CA model only. The DEC 1000 expands the number of outputs controlled by the DGP. Monitoring and Metering The DGP features advanced metering and event recording functions which include: Self-Tests and Diagnostics Self-test routines are performed during power-up and continue to run in the background during service. ailures are categorized as either a critical or non-critical alarm. Appropriate protective functions are automatically disabled during a critical alarm, helping to maintain the high security of the DGP. The DGP also has a RELAY TEST menu which facilitates installation by allowing testing of individual protective functions and output relays for the protection system. Trip Circuit Monitor This function consists of the Trip Voltage Monitor (TVM) and the Trip Current Monitor (TCM) for up to four trip output contacts. The TVM detects any discontinuity in the external trip circuit and produces a non-critical alarm. The TCM confirms energizing of the trip circuit when a trip is issued by the DGP. To protect the output contacts the TCM may be used to seal-in the trip output as long as trip current is flowing. Metering The DGP provides the following metering values: Currents (I a, I b, I c ) Voltages (V a, V b, V c, or V ab, V bc, V ca ) 4

Event Recording The last 100 events are time tagged in milliseconds and stored in the DGP's memory. Event data is available via the RS22 ports and the optional printer port for analysis. 23 LPS-O Generator Backup Protection Protection and Control The LPS-O provides backup protection for generators and transmission lines. Advanced protection functions include: Distance our zones of phase step distance protection are provided. unctions are positive sequence voltage polarized mho characteristics. The reach of the three forward looking zones can be compensated for a delta-wye transformer. Zone 4 is reversed and disregards any transformer between the relay and the fault in the forward direction. Zones 1, 2,, and 4 each include independent timers for phase step distance protection. Out-of-step blocking monitors swing condition and blocks tripping. Out-of-step tripping logic is provided with a choice of two or three mho type characteristics with adjustable shapes. orward and reverse share a common maximum reach angle. Loss of synchronism or a power swing between two areas of the power system is detected by measuring the positive sequence impedance seen by the relay over a period of time as the power swing develops. Directional Ground Overcurrent The ground directional functions are forward and reverse negative sequence current and voltage operated. The ground instantaneous and TOC functions can be independently set with directional control. The ground overcurrent functions can be controlled by the directional functions. Both IOC and TOC functions can be set as nondirectional or directional. The LPS-O provides an adaptive sensitive current disturbance detector (fault detector) and an unbalanced current alarm to detect open or shorted CT leads. Voltage Three single-phase under and overvoltage detectors and a positive sequence overvoltage detector are provided. use failure logic detects a full or partial loss of AC potential and blocks tripping of distance and directional functions. The LPS-O has a three-wire voltage input suitable for either delta or wye connected VTs. Scheme Logic The LPS-O provides userprogrammable logic with up to 40 gates and eight timers. Manual Breaker Control Manual circuit breaker tripping or closing can be done locally or remotely. Multiple Settings Groups Two separate groups of protection settings may be stored in the LPS-O non-volatile memory. The active settings group can be selected by the user. unctional Block Diagram Configurable I/Os All 12 contact converter inputs and 20 contact outputs (except for alarms) are user-configurable. SCR tripping outputs are available for high speed operation. Monitoring and Metering The LPS-O provides sophisticated monitoring and metering functions that include: Trip Circuit Monitor DC battery voltage is monitored across each open trip contact. An alarm triggers when the voltage becomes virtually zero. A current sensor in series with each trip contact is provided, to log an event message on the DC trip current status following the trip. Metering The LPS-O provides the following RMS metering values: Current (I a, I b, I c, I n ) Voltage (V ab, V bc, V ca ) Watts (three-phase) Vars (three-phase) requency The currents are calculated for each phase, and voltages are calculated between phases. The accuracy is 1% of rated current and voltage. The phasor value (magnitude and angle) of the phase currents and voltages are also displayed. Overcurrent Backup The LPS-O provides instantaneous phase and ground overcurrent functions. The phase backup consists of an instantaneous function. Ground overcurrent backup consists of IOC and TOC functions. The TOC function includes four selectable and one programmable curve. G Metering 50P 21P 78 LPS-O 67N 67P 50/ 51G lpso_fbd.ai 50

24 LPS-O Generator Backup Protection Event Recording The LPS-O stores up to 150 events with the date and time stamped to the nearest millisecond. This aids the user with determining the sequence of events, facilitating diagnosis and recovery. Oscillography The LPS-O captures current and voltage waveforms and selected internal logic signals at 64 samples per cycle. The unit can store from six events of 72 cycles each to 6 events of 12 cycles each. The time, date, active settings, and fault report are stored with the data capture. Prefault data can be set from one to eight cycles. Oscillography can be triggered by internal or external signals. Internal signals include trip outputs or a programmable logic signal. The supplied out-of-step trip logic features a three second oscillography data file consisting of phasor values of the currents and voltages captured at a rate of one per cycle. The LPS-O has the capability to store the oscillography files in Comtrade format. The LPS-O relay can playback stored waveform files through the relays processor, allowing the user to playback faults with different settings. Breaker Health The breaker health threshold is set by the user to achieve just in time maintenance. When the cumulative value of the three-phase currents exceeds the threshold, an alarm occurs. The user can adjust the threshold for breakers with previous duty. Self-Test Diagnostics Self-test routines are performed during power up and continue in the background during service. ailures are categorized as either critical or non-critical alarm and recorded in the event log.
