5 Whisper color scrollers Whisper scrollers provide accurate, high-speed scrolling and enhanced fan control. The lightweight, durable construction ensures trouble free operation. Whisper is compatible with Compulite's Vector, Dlite, Sabre, 4D, Spark, and Photon control consoles and all control consoles that output DMX512. Two DC servomotors directly drive the color scrolls. An internal microprocessor controls the motors, ensuring correct gel string tension at maximum speed while maintaining position accuracy. The fan is DMX controlled by the lighting console. 6 Compulite Whisper color scrollers Connecting scrollers and the power supply +48VDC power and DMX data is supplied to the scrollers through the Whisper DMX split box /power supply unit. The PSU has 5-pin DMX512 input and Thru connector, using standard 4-pin XLR connectors. Author s Comment: check last sentence for connector and pin accuracy The Whisper PSU is also available with an analogue output option. This unit provides 0 to +10 VDC outputs on a 25-pin DSub connector. 7 Whisper color scrollers WHISPER Cables Figure 2: Whisper color scroller cable ATTENTION! Make sure the voltage switch is set correctly - 24v or 48v. An incorrect setting may cause irreparable damage to the scroller! A power supply unit that provides both +48VDC power and DMX data to a single scroller is also available. This PSU has a 5-pin DMX512 input and through connector, and a standard 4-pin XLR connector for the scroller. Setting the scroller s DMX address Most of the scroller control panels use 3 dials for setting the DMX address. Gel Strings Figure 3: DMX address dials Some scrollers, such as Whisper XL, have 10 DIP switches on its control panel that are used to set the unit s DMX address. Make sure that the color frames are cut to the correct sizes and carefully connected with temperature resistant adhesive. 3M Scotch Kapton film tape No or equivalent is recommended. For gel string lengths, see Gel String Chart on page 18. 3

8 Compulite Whisper color scrollers To load gel strings 1 Remove the top cover by rotating the quick release catches on the top of the unit. 2 Remove the spools. 3 Attach the gel string to the spools making sure that they are securely taped. 4 Wind up the gel string. 5 Insert both spools. They lock into place when the notches are correctly positioned. 6 Replace and tighten the top cover. 7 Connect power. Whisper homes. The gel string is automatically aligned, correct tension is attained, and the unit memorizes the end-position. To use automatic loading (Whisper XL and Whisper Mini) 1 Turn on the power. Wait until the motor stops. Both LEDs blink. 2 Securely attach the end of the gel string to the left cylinder. 3 Firmly hold the other end of the gel string and press the AUTO LOAD button. The green LED is off while the gel string is being wound. The red LED blinks. At the end of the process the green LED lights. 4 When the green LED is on, securely attach the end of the gel string to the right cylinder. 5 Press the AUTO LOAD button. Whisper homes. The gel string is automatically aligned, correct tension is attained, and the unit memorizes the end-position. Dark gels Dark gel is a special function that keeps a color frame in motion as long as the dimmer is working at more than 10% intensity. This saves gel burn when using very dark colors. The dark gel feature is controlled by the local DIP switch settings. Dark gel frames are always frames 4 & 5. When using the dark gel option, frames 4 and 5 should each be twice the size of a regular frame. Compulite Vector and Dlite consoles, the dark gel option is preset in scroller s profile in the Device Builder. Compulite Sabre, 4D, Spark, and Photon consoles the dark gel option is available through the Scroller Patch menu. To use dark gels 1 Cut frames 4 and 5 each as double length frame. 2 Set the DIP switches for Dark Gel (see???). 4
