1 Installing the DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 and DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 Cards in the Cisco ONS MA Product Names: WBE-3BBE, WBE-3BBE This document provides a card description, specifications, and an installation procedure for the Cisco ONS MA DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 and DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 cards. As appropriate use this document in conjunction with the Cisco ONS CL and Cisco ONS MA Procedure Guide, the Cisco ONS CL and Cisco ONS MA Reference Manual, and the Cisco ONS CL and Cisco ONS MA Troubleshooting Guide when working with DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 and DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 cards. This document contains the following sections: DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 and DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 Card Description, page 1 DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 and DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 Card Specifications, page 3 Install the DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 and DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 Cards, page 5 Related Documentation, page 6 Obtaining Documentation and Submitting a Service Request, page 6 DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 and DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 Card Description The ONS MA DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 and DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 cards provide 28 or 84 Telcordia-compliant, GR-499 DS-1 ports per card, respectively, and three DS-3/EC-1 ports. Each DS-1 port operates at Mbps. Each DS-3/EC-1 port operates at Mbps over a single 75-ohm 728 A or equivalent coaxial span. These cards can operate as a working or protect card in 1:1 protection schemes. In addition, the DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 card provides retiming, so that any outgoing DS-1 signal can be retimed to eliminate accumulated jitter and wander at the point of egress from a synchronous network. Any incoming DS-1 signal from the transport element can also be used as timing source. Americas Headquarters: Cisco Systems, Inc., 170 West Tasman Drive, San Jose, CA USA
2 DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 and DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 Card Description The DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 and DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 cards can be installed in Slots 1, 2, 5, and 6. Card installed in Slots 1 and 2 correspond with the electrical interface assembly (EIA) installed on Side A at the rear of the shelf assembly, and cards in Slots 5 and 6 correspond with the EIA installed on Side B. Note Refer to the Port Protection chapter in the Cisco ONS CL and Cisco ONS MA Reference Manual for information about electrical card protection and supported shelf configurations. Faceplate and Block Diagram Figure 1 shows the faceplates and block diagram for DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 and DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 cards. (22.35 cm) Card weight: 1.5 lbs (0.68 kg) Install the DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 and DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 Cards Warning Blank faceplates and cover panels serve three important functions: they prevent exposure to hazardous voltages and currents inside the chassis; they contain electromagnetic interference (EMI) that might disrupt other equipment; and they direct the flow of cooling air through the chassis. Do not operate the system unless all cards, faceplates, front covers, and rear covers are in place. Statement 1029 Warning During this procedure, wear grounding wrist straps to avoid ESD damage to the card. Do not directly touch the backplane with your hand or any metal tool, or you could shock yourself. Statement 94 Caution Ensure that the patch panel is grounded before installing the DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 or DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3 electrical cards on the Cisco ONS MA chassis. Warning When installing the unit, always make the ground connection first and disconnect it last. Statement 42. Caution Always use the supplied ESD wristband when working with a powered ONS MA. Plug the wristband cable into either of the ESD jacks, on the far left and right faceplates in the shelf. 5
6 Related Documentation Caution Do not install an electrical card in an ONS MA if the ambient temperature exceeds 149 degrees F (65 degrees C). Step 1 Install an electrical card (DS1-28/DS3-EC1-3 or DS1-84/DS3-EC1-3) in a traffic card slot (Slots 1, 2, 5, or 6): a. Open the card ejector. b. Use the ejector at the top of the card and firmly slide the card along the guide rails until the card plugs into the receptacle at the back of the slot. c. Verify that the card is inserted correctly and close the ejector on the card. Note The electrical cards are hot-pluggable, so they can be inserted or removed without turning off the power to the ONS MA. Step 2 Step 3 Verify the electrical card LED activity: a. All LEDs (FAIL, ACT/STBY, DS1 SF, DS3 SF) turn on for 5 seconds, then turn off. b. The green ACT/STBY and red FAIL LED turn on for 15 seconds. c. The red FAIL LED flashes for 10 seconds, then becomes steady red for 30 seconds. d. While the red FAIL LED is on, the ACT/STBY LED turns green for three seconds, then turns amber. During this time, the DS1 SF and DS3 SF LEDs are amber. e. All LEDs turn off. f. The ACT/STBY LED turns green (active) or amber (standby). When you log into CTC, verify that the card appears properly in CTC node view.
