1 Power over Ethernet Load Module Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology provides the capability to deliver power over standard Ethernet cabling at the same time as passing Ethernet data traffic. There are two types of PoE devices: Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) and Powered Device (PD). The PSE provides power to the PD's. Ixia's Power over Ethernet (PoE) Load Module is the ideal test solution for validating Power Sourcing Equipment based on the IEEE 802.3af PoE standard. Ixia's PoE Load Module emulates multiple Powered Devices for the purpose of testing PSE-enabled switches and systems. The PoE Load Module is designed for use with Ixia's line of Ethernet network interface modules, which provide data traffic generation and analysis, to verify the power sourcing capabilities of the PSE and to verify data traffic is not impacted by varying power load conditions. Each port can simulate a range of valid or invalid signatures during detection, classification, or maintenance of power. Up to 30 Watts can be dissipated per PoE port. Integrated Testing of Both Power and Traffic Generation The PoE load module works in conjunction with Ixia's line of copper-based Ethernet load modules, providing a complete solution to test and correlate data and power events in Power over Ethernet-enabled switches and systems. 3 Figure 2. Example Cabling Configuration Highly Scalable Up to 64 emulated PD's are supported in a single IXIA 1600T chassis. Multiple chassis can be daisy-chained together, providing very high port scalability. Each PD port can be run independently, or all PD ports controlled at once. Multiple users can control separate PD's concurrently, allowing hardware resources to be shared. Easy to Use The PoE load module can be managed using Ixia's IxExplorer application -- an interactive, GUI-based software interface that allows all features of each Ixia load module to be configured and operated. The Tcl API offers full support of all configurable parameters within the GUI. This allows users to develop custom scripts and integrate the modules into automated test environments. Large port count tests can be manipulated to emulate simultaneous power consumption or similar pulsing signatures. P/N: Page 3 of 9

4 Figure 3. PoE Port Configuration Tcl Programming All settings and acquired data are accessible via the Tcl Application Programming Interface (API). This API allows users to develop custom scripts and integrate the modules into automated test environments. Test Automation - PoE Verification Test A fully automated PoE Verification Test Suite using Ixia's Suite Power over Ethernet Load Module is available for verification of PSE equipment according to IEEE 802.3af. The test suite is designed to validate PD detection, Classification, AC/DC MPS, Start Up/Shut Down and Operating. Detailed test results in Excel or HTML formats are generated at the end of each test. The PoE Verification Test Suite is ideal for design verification testing. With its capabilities to control the DUT (Device Under Test) along with flexible test selection and reporting, it is also adaptable for manufacturing testing. P/N: Page 4 of 9
