1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 HISTORY The GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus) has become the worldwide standard for connecting instruments to computers. Invented in the 1960s b Hewlett Packard and originall designated as HPIB, the bus specification was eventuall adopted b a wide variet of both instrument and computer manufacturers. The original specification was documented and sanctioned b the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers as IEEE-488. The advent of the inexpensive and powerful personal computer has driven the GPIB market through explosive growth. As GPIB bus usage expanded, there arose the need for some additional capabilit and standardization, so in 1987, IEEE was adopted. IEEE was revised/amended in 1992 and represents the current GPIB specification. The new specification provides some standardization among compliant instruments. These standardization greatl simplifies the job of the GPIB sstem designer since compliant instruments share common programming conventions. 1.2 GPIB SYSTEM DESCRIPTION Talkers, Listeners, and Controllers A GPIB device can be a Talker, Listener, and/or Controller. As the name implies, a Talker sends data to one or more Listeners, A Listener accepts data from a Talker and a Controller manages the flow of information over the bus. For example, a GPIB digital voltmeter acts as a Listener when its input configurations and ranges are being set, but then acts as a Talker when sending its readings to the computer. The Controller is in charge of all communications over the bus. The Controller s job is to make sure onl one device tries to talk at a time, and to make sure the correct Listener(s) are receiving data when the Talker talks. Each GPIB sstem has a single sstem controller. The sstem controller is ultimatel in charge of the bus, and is in control when the bus is powered up. There can be more than one Controller on the bus and the Sstem Controller can pass active control to another controller capable device, though onl one can be Controller-In-Charge at a given time. The GPIB board is usuall designated as the Sstem Controller. 1

1.2.2 GPIB Electrical Signal Configuration The GPIB is an 8-bit parallel data transfer bus. In addition to the 8 data bits, the bus carries three handshaking lines and five GPIB specific management and control lines. The remainder of the standard 24 pin GPIB cable is used for the cable shield, signal grounds and returns. The GPIB connector pin-out is shown in the diagram below: Data Lines Figure 1-1. Standard GPIB Cable/Connector DIO1 through DIO8 are the data transfer bits. Most GPIB sstems send 7-bit data and use the eight bit as a parit or disregard it entirel Handshaking Lines There are three handshaking lines that control the data transfer between devices. NRFD (Not Read For Data): this bit is used to indicate the readiness (or lack thereof) of a device to accept data DAV (Data Valid): bit is used to indicate to receiving devices that data has been placed on the bus and is available to read. NDAC (Not Data Accepted): is asserted b the receiving device to indicate that data has been read and ma now be removed from the bus. 2

1.2.5 Sstem Management lines ATN (Attention): is used b the controller to specif how data on the DIO lines is interpreted and which devices must respond to the data IFC (Interface Clear): is used b the sstem controller to place the entire sstem in a known quiescent (Cleared) state and to assert itself as Controller In Charge (CIC). SRQ (Service Request): is used b a device on the bus to indicate the need for attention and requests an interrupt of the current event sequence. REN (Remote Enable): is used b the controller in conjunction with other messages to place a device on the bus into either remote or local mode. EOI (End or Identif): Is used b Talkers to indicate the end of a message string, or is used b the Controller to command a polling sequence CONNECTION CONFIGURATIONS The GPIB specification is quite definitive regarding the number of devices and cable lengths allowed in a GPIB sstem. There can be no more than 15 devices on a single contiguous GPIB bus. Larger sstems are possible b installing additional GPIB interface boards in our computer The maximum, total length of all cables on a single GPIB sstem is 20 meters. In addition, cable length between consecutive devices ma be no greater than 4 meters, and average cable length must be 2 meters or less. Stated another wa, the total cable length (in meters) in the sstem ma not be longer than 2 times the number of devices (up to 20 meters). Longer length sstems are possible, but onl with the use of a GPIB extender card. In addition to the above rules, at least two thirds of all devices on the bus should be powered-on for proper operation. Keeping the above constraints in mind, there is no limitation on the actual connection scheme used to connect the GPIB devices together. Star, Linear or an combination of both ma be used. These are shown in the following diagrams. 3

2.4 PCM-GPIB Figure 2-6. PCM-GPIB Interface Card The PCM-GPIB board is completel plug-and-pla. There are no switches or jumpers to set prior to installation in our computer. Simpl follow the steps shown below to install our PCM-GPIB hardware. Before installing this plug and pla board, install the GPIB Librar software that ou received with it. If ou are prompted regarding PCMCIA support, choose to install it. After our hardware is installed, please refer to the GPIB software manual. Some operating sstems, such as Windows 3.x and Windows NT (revision 4 or less) require a separate software package called Card and Socket Services or CardWizard to be installed. If ou received our computer with PCMCIA ports installed, it is likel that the required software is alread installed. If this is the case, continue with section following. If not, refer to Appendix 1 for information regarding installation of Card and Socket Services. Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows 2000 all have integrated Card and Socket Services. If ou are installing to one of these operating sstems, continue with section following. 10

2.4.1 Confirming Proper Installation After installing the GPIB Librar software as described in the GPIB Librar manual, reboot the PC and then insert the card into the PCMCIA slot. If ou are using Windows NT 4.0 with CardWizard, ou should insert the PCM-GPIB into the PCMCIA slot before rebooting our computer. When ou insert our PCMCIA card into a PCMCIA slot in the PC, Card and Socket Services detects the board and assigns appropriate resources to the card such as interrupts and I/O addresses. The number and tpe of resources assigned is determined b firmware on the PCMCIA card ou are installing. A two-tone beep is the indication of successful detection and configuration on most sstems. If ou do not hear the two-tone beep on insertion, continue to the next section Installing the.inf File Some operating sstems, such as Windows 95, 98 and 2000 require more information to properl configure the PCMCIA card in the sstem. When Windows detects that a new card has been installed in the sstem, it looks for an information file to properl add the new hardware to the Device Manager. If the file needed is alread installed on the PC, this process is automatic and no user action is required. If not, the user is prompted to insert a disk containing the file. The file needed is included on disk 1 of the GPIB Librar disk set. Simpl insert the disk and click OK. To verif the card has been recognized, open the Device Manager (Start/Settings/Control Panel/Sstem and select the Device Manager tab) and confirm that the card is listed under "CBI_GPIB." If our card appears in the list, run CBCONF.EXE as described in the GPIB Librar manual to configure our board. If our card has not been recognized, our sstem ma not be properl configured for PCMCIA card use. Please refer to Appendix 1 for more information Cabling to the PCM-GPIB The PCM-GPIB requires a special interface cable to connect to other devices on the bus. This cable is supplied with the PCM-GPIB card. The part number for this cable is CA-PCMGPIB. 11

2.5 PC104-GPIB Figure 2-7. PC104-GPIB Interface Board The onl hardware configuration required prior to installing the ISA-GPIB/LC is setting the board s Base Address switch. The location of the Base Address switch is shown in the photograph above, while the switch itself is shown in the diagram on the following page. Most computers will have Base Address 300h (768 decimal) free and the default setting of the board is 300h. If there is alread a board in our sstem using address 300h (768 Decimal), ou will have to change the board s base address prior to installing it in our computer. Other tpicall free addresses include 310h and 330h. The following diagram shows the base address in its default 300 Hex setting SV6 5L Figure 2-8. Base Address Switches - PC104-GPIB The bit weights corresponding to each switch are shown in the following table. 12

Hex Dec. Switch Value Value Default up (200h) up (100h) down (0h) down (0h) down (0h) down (0h) total 300h Note: On this base address switch, Up is ON, Down is OFF. This configuration is the opposite of most PC104 based data acquisition boards. 2.6 CPCI-GPIB Figure 2-9. CPCI-GPIB Interface Board The CPCI-GPIB board is completel plug and pla. To install this board into our sstem, follow the steps below. 1. Turn our computer off 2. Open our computer front panel (if enclosed) 3. Insert the CPCI-GPIB into an available 3U CPCI slot 4. Put our computer s case back on (optional). 5. Switch our computer back on, and follow the instructions in the GPIB software manual ou received with the board. 13

3.0 APPENDIX - CARD & SOCKET SERVICES When ou insert our PCMCIA card into a PCMCIA slot in the PC, Card and Socket Services detects the board and ou are notified b the sstem, either b a dialog box or an audible tone. If there is no response from the sstem when the card is inserted or removed, our sstem ma not be configured for PCMCIA support. 3.1 IF YOUR PCMCIA CARD IS NOT DETECTED The use of PCMCIA cards requires that Card and Socket Services are installed on our sstem. If our sstem was purchased with a PCMCIA port installed, it is ver likel that the software required to use that port (Card and Socket Services) is installed. If ou insert our PCMCIA card into the slot and get no acknowledgment from the PC (either a dialog box appears or a sound is produced on insertion or removal of the card), the problem ma be that Card and Socket Services is not installed or active. Read the section below that applies to the operating sstem ou are using to determine if additional software is required Windows 95, 98 or 2000 If Windows does not detect the card or ou are not prompted for a driver after inserting the card, check that our computer's 32-bit PCMCIA drivers are enabled. Do this b opening the Sstem Properties dialog (Start/Settings/Control Panel/Sstem) and clicking the Performance tab. The PC Cards (PCMCIA) field should indicate 32-bit. If DOS Compatible Mode or No PCMCIA Sockets Installed is indicated, ou need to update our sstem. Depending on which condition is reported, use one of the following procedures. No PCMCIA Sockets Installed : Open the Sstem Properties dialog (Start/Settings/Control Panel/Sstem) and click the Device Manager tab. Verif that a PCMCIA Socket is listed and that the Properties indicate working. If not, use the Add New Hardware Wizard to install our PCMCIA support. DOS Compatible Mode : Open the PC Card Properties dialog (Start/Settings/Control Panel/PC Card). The dialog for loading 32-bit drivers should pop up. Load the 32-bit drivers. After performing the update procedure above, reboot our PC and tr inserting our card again. To verif the card has been recognized, go to Control Panel/Sstem/Device Manager and the card should now appear under "DAS Component." If our card appears in the list ou can now proceed to the "USING InstaCal" section of this manual. 14

3.1.2 Windows NT 4.0 Computers running Windows NT 4.0 must use a third part Card & Socket Services (CSS) such as CardWizard b SstemSoft ( Install CardWizard before installing the GPIB Librar. If ou have alread installed the GPIB Librar, uninstall it using the Add / Remove Programs Wizard, install CardWizard and then reinstall the GPIB Librar software Windows 3.x or DOS Computers running Windows 3.x and/or DOS must use the DOS based Card & Socket Services (CSS) drivers. CSS is included with most new computers, but if ou need to purchase these drivers, the are available from Measurement Computing Corp. (order PCM-CSS). DOS Card & Socket Services drivers are usuall loaded from the CONFIG.SYS sstem file. Verif that these drivers are loading without error when ou boot our PC. If these drivers are not installed on our PC, are not loading properl or ou are not sure that the are required on our sstem, see the section titled ABOUT DOS CARD & SOCKET SERVICES below. In addition, when using specialized PCMCIA cards (such as GPIB cards) with DOS based Card & Socket Services (CSS) drivers, client software ma also be required. The client for Measurement Computing Corp. PCM-GPIB cards, GCLIENT, is used b CSS to configure the PCMCIA GPIB cards. GCLIENT loads from the AUTOEXEC.BAT sstem file. If GCLIENT is not loading without error when ou boot our PC, see the section titled ABOUT GCLIENT below. 3.2 ABOUT DOS CARD & SOCKET SERVICES The following section describes DOS Card & Socket Services. Read it to help determine if ou need to install DOS Card & Socket Services. If, after reviewing the following information ou decide ou need to install it, Measurement Computing Corp. offers DOS Card & Socket Services drivers b SstemSoft as a separate product (order PCM-CSS). Some operating sstems, such as Windows 95, include an integrated version of Card & Socket Services. If ou are running such an operating sstem, do not install DOS Card & Socket Services unless ou have a specific reason to do so What is CSS? CSS is a program that communicates with our computers PCMCIA interface controller and configures it. The PCMCIA interface is configurable, unlike the standard ISA bus ou ma be familiar with. If ou plug a PCMCIA board into a PCMCIA slot and have not run CSS, ou will have no access to board functions. 15

3.2.2 How Do I Know CSS Is Installed and Running? There is a simple test. Just plug in our PCM card. If CSS is installed and working the computer will beep. You can remove and replace our PCM card as often as ou like and need not power down to do so. The computer should beep each time ou insert the PCM card What About CSS For Multiple PCM Boards? Card & Socket Services should function for all tpes of PCMCIA cards. 3.3 ABOUT GCLIENT What is GCLIENT? GCLIENT.COM is a DOS based configuration client that is used as an aid in configuring PCMCIA GPIB cards when using DOS based Card & Socket Services drivers. GCLIENT.COM is included with the software received with our PCMCIA GPIB card. If using an DOS based Card & Socket Services drivers, load GCLIENT.COM at boot time after loading of the Card & Socket Services drivers. Do not load GCLIENT.COM if using Windows based Card & Socket Services drivers How Do I Know GCLIENT Is Installed? As the sstem boots, GCLIENT displas a banner indicating that it is loading. An errors in the loading process will also be displaed Does GCLIENT Use Sstem Resources? Yes. The GCLIENT.COM driver installed from our AUTOEXEC.BAT uses about 10K of memor. The GCLIENT.COM program is a TSR (Terminate and Sta Resident). You ma modif the program line to LOADHIGH the TSR What About Clients For Multiple PCM Boards? You can run multiple PCMCIA boards with GCLIENT running. If ou have other CLIENT programs running for other PCMCIA boards, it will not interfere What PCM Series Cards Are Supported B GCLIENT?
