1 33 RAM and NSv Proximity Transducer System Description The 33 RAM and NSv Proximity Transducer system is intended for centrifugal air compressors, refrigeration compressors, process gas compressors and other machines with tight installation requirements. It consists of a 33 RAM (Robust Air Machine) Proximitor Sensor, a 33 NSv (Narrow Side view) probe and a 33 NSv extension cable. The 33 RAM and NSv Proximity Transducer System replace our previous 3- series transducer system using fiberglass-tipped 19 probes. The primary uses for this transducer system are for areas where either counterbore, side view or rearview restrictions limit the use of our standard 33 and 33 XL Transducer Systems. It is also ideal for small target applications, such as when measuring radial vibration on shafts smaller than 51 mm (2 in) or axial position on flat targets smaller than 15 mm (.6 in). When replacing the 3-series 19 transducer system, all components of the transducer system (Proximitor Sensor, probe and extension cable) must be replaced. 33 NSv Probe and Extension Cable The 33 NSv probe and extension cable are mechanically and electrically compatible and interchangeable with our previous 33 RAM proximity probe and extension cable. The 33 NSv probe has increased chemical resistance, making it as robust as our 33 5 mm probe. This enables it to be used in many process chemical compressors. The 33 NSv probe also has superior side-view characteristics compared to the 3-series 19 probe when gapping the 33 NSv probe at the same distance from the probe target. See graph 3 for recommended gap settings as the counterbore decreases below the recommended counterbore size. The 33 NSv probe also incorporates many of the latest proximity probe features. It uses a polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) probe tip that is threaded into a stainless steel probe case. Our patented TipLoc TM molding method prevents the PPS probe tip from twisting and vibrating loose. Standard probe thread sizes include M8x1, M1x1, 1/4-28 UNF and 3/8-24 UNF threads. The 33 NSv probe and extension cable use 75 Ω coaxial cable, which is stronger than the 5 Ω cable used on the 19 probe. Our patented CableLoc TM design provides 22 N (5 pounds) pull strength where the cable attaches to the probe tip. The 33 NSv probe and extension cable have self-locking, gold-plated brass ClickLoc TM connectors which "click" when tightened. ClickLoc connectors allow you to tighten the connection without using tools. They lock in place when tightened, preventing intermittent signals caused by loose connectors. Part Number Rev. 2 33 RAM Proximitor Sensor The 33 RAM Proximitor Sensor is a highly temperaturestable proximity transducer system. It has a scale factor of 2 mv/mil, which is the most common output for eddy current transducers. Because of its enhanced sideview and small target characteristics, it has a shorter linear range than our standard transducer systems. With 6 mils of linear range, it exceeds the linear range of the 3-series transducer system. Electrical isolation of the Proximitor Sensor case is a standard feature that eliminates the need for Proximitor isolation kits required on our previous 3-series proximity transducer systems. For field wiring, a threeconductor shielded triad cable is recommended to ensure superior performance when connecting to our monitors and diagnostic equipment. Specifications Unless otherwise noted, the following specifications are for a 33 RAM Proximity Transducer System between 18 C and 27 C (64 F to 8 F) with a -24 Vdc power supply, a 1 kω load and a GE supplied AISI 414 steel target. Reducing the gap between the probe and target will help limit the change in scale factor. See graph 4 for additional information. 3 mm (1.2 in) 2 mm (.8 in) Measurements on shaft diameters smaller than 3 mm (1.2 in) usually require close spacing of radial vibration or axial position transducers with the potential for their electromagnetic emitted fields to interact with one another (cross-talk), resulting in erroneous readings. To prevent cross-talk, maintain minimum separation of transducer tips of at least 25 mm (1. inches) for axial position measurements or 23 mm (.9 in) for radial vibration measurements. Radial vibration or position measurements on shaft diameters smaller than 2 mm (.8 in) will generally result in greater than a 1% change in average scale factor. See graph 5 for additional information.
