4 Installation The TNL-50 flash unit is installed using a pan-tilt-roll bracket. In order to minimize retro-reflectance from vehicle license plates it is recommended to mount the flash at a minimum distance from the camera of at least 1 meter. This can be obtained by mounting the flash on the circumference of a virtual circle with a radius of 1 meter and with its center at the lens of the camera (see figure 2 below). This is sufficient for typical installations where the angle from the camera to the vehicle plate at the trigger line is approximately 60 degrees (e.g., camera is 5 meters above the height of the vehicle plate and the trigger point is 9 meters from the base of the gantry or camera pole). For shallower angles (camera is lower and/or trigger point is farther away) a larger mounting radius may be required to avoid too much light reflecting from the plate into the camera. R 1 meter Figure 2. TNL-50 mounting radius Installation 5
TNL-50 Installation Manual 5 Indicators There are three indicators in the upper right side of the unit. Communication Power Figure 3. Status Status indicators The indicators are Power (left): Green indicator for presence of 24V supply voltage Communication (center): Indicator for communication with the unit. The indicator is red for a few seconds when communication is performed with the unit. The indicator is green when there is no communication with the unit. Status (right): Status indicator. No faults detected are indicated by a green light. Red light indicates that a fault has been detected. Faults can be: Heaters current not correct Strobe input pulse length too long in slaved mode Flash capacitor discharge too small indicating that the LED current is too small. This can be due to defective LEDs or LED driving circuitry. The status LED will stay red until the error is not detected anymore. 6 Indicators
6 Modes of operation The TNL-50 flash unit has 3 modes of operation: Slaved mode Triggered mode Traffic Safety mode (combined with Slave and Triggered mode ) 6.1 Slaved mode In Slaved mode the flash pulse width is controlled by the duration of the input strobe width. The flash pulse width has the same duration as the input strobe signal. Slaved mode timing: Strobe input signal Flash output signal Figure 4 If desired, the polarity of the strobe signal can be inverted in the TNL-50 control tool. 6.2 Triggered mode In Triggered mode the flash pulse width is set from the control tool in steps of 50µs (see figure 7: Pulse Width Control = Configurable ). The input strobe pulse width must be larger than the desired flash pulse width. Triggered mode timing: Strobe input signal Pulse width set from TNL-50 control tool Flash output signal Figure Traffic Safety mode In Traffic Safety Mode a constant low current is applied to the light emitting diodes making the light from the flash pulse less disturbing to the human eye. Although the constant current can be less than 250 times the flash current, the constant light is bright enough to the eye to significantly reduce the perceived brightness of the flash pulse. Modes of Operation 7
7 Connectors The TNL-50 has three connectors located in the bottom of the unit. These are 1. Power, strobe control, and serial/viscam setup communication 2. USB setup communication 3. Power input connector (high power) A F B 3A 3B E C D Figure Connector pinout Connector #1: Power Input, Serial Communications, Strobe In, Strobe Status A: Gnd (Black) B: Strobe Input (White) C: Strobe Status Output (Blue) D: +24V Input (Red) E: RS485+ (Green) F: RS485- (Orange) The colors listed in the parenthesis refer to the cable supplied with the unit (shielded, outdoor rated, 6 conductors, 3m [9.8ft] terminated with connector to fit with VISCAM system). For information about connection to JAI VISCAM cameras please refer to the installation manual for the camera. Connector #2: USB mini-b port, with cap communication setup Standard USB mini pin out. The USB communication interface in the TNL-50 is utilizing a driver from Silicon Labs called CP2102. Before connecting the USB cable from the computer to the TNL-50 the driver for the unit must be installed. The driver can be found here: Connector #3: Power Input (if using high power option) (Manufacturer: Harwin Inc, p/n: C R10SL-4P) 3A: +24V DC±10%. Current < 3A 3B: Gnd 8 Connectors
8 Control Tool The application for controlling the TNL-50 via the USB connector can be downloaded from the JAI website: It is called TNL- 50 Control Tool. In order to use the TNL-50 Control Tool via the USB connector, a driver must be installed on the PC to make the USB interface function as a virtual serial port. Note: this must be done BEFORE connecting the USB cable from the PC to the TNL-50. Otherwise, the PC will attempt to install a default USB driver which will prevent the virtual serial port operation. The latest USB Virtual Serial Port driver can be downloaded from: After installing the driver on the PC, the USB cable can be inserted into the computer. Switch on the power to the TNL-50 and wait until the driver has properly identified the unit. Open the TNL-50 Control Tool, select the serial port that has been installed, and then push the connect button to the right. The window will then look like this Figure 7 Control Tool 9
The properties field has, in the upper left corner, controls for Traffic Safety Mode with three predefined levels and one custom level setting. The Flash Intensity has likewise three predefined levels and one custom setting. The lower part is the setup for Slaved ( Same as Strobe ) and Triggered mode ( Configurable ). The Input inversion is a selection between a positive strobe input pulse and a strobe pulse that is normally high and goes low when the strobe is active. Note: Input inversion mode only works in Same as Strobe mode 10 Control Tool
