Device description 7/22 2 Device description 2.1 Scope of application 2.2 Characteristics E55C PLAN+ modems provide PLC (Power Line Carrier) communication between the connected meter and a central AMM system. The E55C PLAN+ modem is intended for the use with the following Landis+Gyr meters: E650 (ZxD) meters, series 3 E650 (ZxD) meters, series 2 with firmware B23 or B24 E550 (ZxG) meter, series 2 It is preferably installed on a specific meter terminal cover (part number ) with the corresponding adapter. In exceptional cases it can also be wall mounted using 3 screws or a DIN-rail. The E55C PLAN+ modem has the following basic characteristics: PLC interface for remote communication between the connected E550 or E650 meter and a central AMM system (PLAN transmission rate 1200 or 2400 bits per second) via a data concentrator such as the DC450. If no meter is connected, the device will operate as a PLC repeater. RS485 interface for local communication with an E550 or E650 meter. 3 LEDs as status indications 1 push button for basic configurations 2.3 Functions PLAN+ modem A functional description of the E55C PLAN+ modem is provided separately. The following main functions are briefly summarised below: The E55C includes a complete modem implementing both the physical and link layer of the PLAN+ standard as defined in IEC The modem allows transmission speeds of 1200 bits per second and 2400 bits per second using the distribution lines as the communication media in low voltage networks using spread frequency shift keying (S_FSK). RS485 interface The RS485 interface is standardized according to ISO And can be used to connect to a single meter with an RS485 interface using the included cable. The E55C is the master of the bus and the meter is the slave. Only a single meter can be supported by one E55C PLAN+ Modem. Protocol gateway The E55C implements all protocol conversions necessary to allow logical name addressing of the meter that only supports short name addressing at the COSEM application layer level. The logical name addressing is used on the PLAN+ network while the short name addressing is used on the RS485 interface. In addition, the E55C encapsulates DLMS messages in HDLC frames for presentation to the meter on the RS485 interface. D en a E55C PLAN+ Modem User Manual Landis+Gyr

Mechanical description 9/ Connections 1 2 Fig. 2 Connections 1 PLC/Mains connection (screw tightened terminals) 2 RS485 interface (RJ12 socket) PLC/Mains connection RS485 interface The PLC/Mains connection of the E55C PLAN+ modem is made via the two screw tightened terminals on the front side of the case (under the terminal cover). The PLC/Mains connection line is polarity independent, i.e. it does not matter which wire of the cable (phase and neutral) is connected to which screw tightened terminal. The RS485 connection of the E55C PLAN+ modem to the meter is made via an RJ12 socket with the following pin assignment: Pin No. Signal 1 GND 2 UP (Data a) 3 UN (Data b) 4 UN (Data b) 5 UP (Data a) 6 GND The pins of the RJ12 socket are numbered as follows: 1 6 Fig. 3 Pin numbering of RJ12 socket D en a E55C PLAN+ Modem User Manual Landis+Gyr
10/22 Installation/de-installation 4 Installation/de-installation The preferred method to install the E55C PLAN+ modem is to mount the modem on a specific meter terminal cover with the provided adapter. In cases where there is no room to mount the modem on top of the terminal cover, the modem can also be wall mounted using 3 screws or a DIN-rail mounted (not described in this user manual). This is done by detaching the adapter plate by pulling the DIN release latch fully. Wall mounting and DINrail mounting is the typical method for using the E55C PLAN+ modem as a PLAN repeater. 4.1 Preparing the E55C PLAN+ modem for installation Before starting work check that the materials required are all present: E55C PLAN+ modem Adapter RJ12 connection cable FTT4/5 for RCR meter terminal cover (part number ordered as part of meter or as a separate part) 1. Cut two connecting wires (not included) to the required length (approx. 250 mm) and strip their ends by approximately 4 mm. If stranded wire is used instead of a wire, it has to be provided with ferrules. The length of the wire may vary if it is installed using wall mounting or DIN-rail mount. Wires of less than 2.5 mm 2 can be used. 2. Remove the small terminal cover of the E55C by turning the plastic screw counter-clockwise. 4.2 Fitting and connecting the E55C PLAN+ modem Disconnect the meter from mains before fitting and connecting the E55C PLAN+ modem In order to avoid hazardous electric shocks, ensure there is no voltage applied to the meter when fitting and connecting the E55C PLAN+ modem. Fit the E55C PLAN+ modem as follows: 1. Ensure that the meter is disconnected from mains. 2. Remove the utility seals on the meter terminal cover. 3. Remove the meter terminal cover. 4. If the E55C PLAN+ modem is used with an E550 (ZxG) meter, insert the two connecting wires in the appropriate phase and neutral screw tightened terminals of the E550 meter (voltage outputs on top row of terminals, terminal numbers see connection diagram) and carefully tighten the terminal screws (torque max. 0.6 Nm). If the E55C PLAN+ modem is used with an E650 (ZxD) meter, insert the two connecting wires in the appropriate phase and neutral screwless spring-loaded terminals of the E650 meter (voltage outputs on centre row of terminals, terminal numbers see connection diagram) as shown in Fig. 4 below. Landis+Gyr D en a E55C PLAN+ Modem User Manual
Installation/de-installation 11/22 ca. 4 mm Fig. 4 A B C E55C mains connection to an E650 meter 5. Insert one end of the RJ12 connection cable in the RS485 RJ12 socket of the meter until the connector engages. 6. Feed the wires and the RJ12 cable through the big hole of the FTT4/5 terminal cover. 7. Put the terminal cover on the meter and tighten the two silver screws firmly (torque max. 3 Nm). 8. Hold the E55C to the terminal cover while feeding through the wires and the RJ12 cable through the meter terminal cover with E55C. 9. Fasten the three 15.9 mm screws firmly to secure the E55C to the terminal cover. 10. Insert the free end of the RJ12 connection cable in the RJ12 socket of the E55C PLAN+ modem until the connector engages. 11. Insert the free end of the wires into the terminals of the E55C. For wires with small conductor cross-sections the connecting wire must be placed carefully in the middle of the terminal, so that it cannot move sideways when tightening the terminal screws. When tightening, ensure that the connecting line remains between the copper inside the terminal and the screw. 12. Check the installation as described in section 4.3 "Commissioning and functional check". 4.3 Commissioning and functional check The installed E55C PLAN+ modem should be put into service and checked when used with a meter as follows: 1. Insert the main fuses removed before installation. The meter and the E55C PLAN+ modem should be powered up. 2. Check whether the LED "RS485 Tx/Rx" on the E55C PLAN+ modem is either on (steady green) or is blinking green or red (in case a communication between meter and E55C PLAN+ modem is taking place). If the LED "RS485 Tx/Rx" remains off, the RS485 connection is not properly connected or the RS485 interface on the meter is not configured properly. 3. If necessary, press and hold down the push button on the E55C PLAN+ modem for longer than 3 seconds to enter the configuration mode. Cycle through all possible combinations of repeater modes or transmission rates. LED "RS485 Tx/Rx" indicates the repeater status value setting: - Red = Always repeater - Green = Dynamic repeater - Off = Never repeater D en a E55C PLAN+ Modem User Manual Landis+Gyr
12/22 Installation/de-installation LED "PLC Registered" indicates the transmission rate setting: - Green = 2400 bits per second - Off = 1200 bits per second 4. Long press the push button on the E55C PLAN+ modem (> 3 s) to save the setting and exit the configuration mode. 5. Normally, the E55C is installed on a network with PLC concentrator that has been commissioned. Depending on the configuration of the concentrator, the time that it takes for a metering point to be discovered by the concentrator can vary drastically. Typical setting can mean that an installer would have to wait up to one hour before the metering point is discovered. If a definite confirmation of communication is needed before leaving the site, the installer will have to contact the Head End System to initiate a discovery process. Alternatively, some installers simply assume that the installation is correct and that only a small percentage of metering points will need further debugging work. If the concentrator is searching for new meters, check that the LED "PLC Registered" is either blinking (locked, unregistered) or on (locked and registered). If the LED "PLC Registered" remains off, the E55C PLAN+ modem is unlocked and unregistered. PLC concentrators must have been installed Communication check can be performed only if PLC concentrators have already been installed on the network. A PLC concentrator automatically identifies devices operating in its communication area and adds them to the concentrator's topology in the system and automatic reading can begin. See concentrator and system documentation for more information. 6. If the commissioning and functional checks including the communication check are successful, mount the E55C PLAN+ modem small terminal cover by turning the plastic screw clockwise. Seal the E55C PLAN+ modem with utility seals. 4.4 Removing/exchanging the E55C PLAN+ modem Disconnect the meter from mains before dismounting the E55C PLAN+ modem In order to avoid hazardous electric shocks, ensure there is no voltage applied to the meter when removing the E55C PLAN+ modem. The E55C PLAN+ modem is dismounted from the meter in reverse order of the installation (see sections 4.1 and 4.2). Landis+Gyr D en a E55C PLAN+ Modem User Manual
Operation 13/22 5 Operation This section describes the significance of the LEDs, the function of the push button and the operating modes of the E55C PLAN+ modem. The modem can be in two modes: normal operating mode or configuration mode. The modem enters normal operating mode at power up. These modes are available to the user by cycling through possible modes and then pressing the push button to save the setting. State LED "RS485 Tx/Rx" LED "PLC Registered" Mode 1 Steady red Off Always repeater mode at 1200 bits per second 2 Steady green Off Dynamic repeater mode at 1200 bits per second 3 Off Steady green Never repeater mode at 2400 bits per second 4 Steady red Steady green Always repeater mode at 2400 bits per second 5 Steady green Steady green Dynamic repeater mode at 2400 bits per second 6 Off Off Never repeater mode at 1200 bits per second Typically the modem is used in dynamic repeater mode. This mode is dynamic in the sense that periodically the modem may receive a repeater call from the concentrator that may provide a temporary instruction to repeat or not to repeat. This is intended to improve performance to combat clustering effects. The bit rate is determined by the system and must be known before units can be deployed.
