To transmit over the radio, depress and hold the PTT switch on the U3813 or depress and hold the remote PTT switch, if your system is so equipped. NOTE: Radio speakers mounted near the headset may produce feed back, causing a squeal when transmitting. If this occurs, the speaker should be relocated, or a speaker cutoff switch should be installed. 28

29 360 Franklin Street, Box 15054, Worcester, MA TEL FAX DESCRIPTION INSTALLATION/OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS U3814 MULTI-RADIO INTERFACE MODULE The U3814 Multi-Radio Interface Module is designed to interface four separate systems to a David Clark Company Series 3800 Intercom System. A red LED indicator over the radio push-to-talk bufton (PTT) will light, indicating transmission over the selected radio. A Headset Jack is provided for interface of the operator s H3300 series headset at the module, or if desired, a remote PTT connector is also provided, allowing for radio and intercom communication up to 15 feet away from the module. A C3023 Belt Station/Radio PTT is required to interface the H3300 series headset to the modules if the remote operation is desired. The Radio Volume control adjusts the listen level of the radio selected by the operator. The radio listen level however, cannot be increased beyond that set at the control head of the selected radio. The Headset Volume control allows for the setting of a comfortable listening level to the operator s headset. Two System connectors are provided for connecting the module to the series 3800 intercom system and for connecting additional headset stations or system modules. A Speaker Cutout connector is provided to allow the user to shut off the speaker on the radio selected by the Radio Select switch. A typical operating mode would entail making a relay closure when the Radio Select switch is turned to the radio in use. This enables the operator, through the use of his own relay, to cut off the speaker of the radio he is switched to, but would leave the remaining radio speakers on P-60 (10-94) 29 David Clark Company Incorporated

30 The following table shows the electrical status of the Speaker Cutout connector pins for each Radio Select switch position. Speaker Cutout Pin Status For Each Radio Select Switch Position Radio Selector Switch Position Radio 1 Radio 2 Radio 3 Radio 4 Speaker Cutout Connector Pins Making Electrical Contact A and B A and C A and D A and E NOTE: Speaker Cutout port current and operating voltage not to exceed 10 MA at 14 VDC. It is typical for the user to connect pin A of the Speaker Cutout port, to a good GND, and then to connect pins 8, C, D, and E, to the common side of the respective relay coils. The user s speakers would then be wired through the normally closed portion of the relay contacts. When a radio is selected, its corresponding relay would then be turned on, thus opening its speaker line and making it less distracting for the listener. The other three radio speakers would still be on, making it possible for other personnel within the vehicle to monitor the other three radios. If stand-alone operation is desired, the U3814 may be powered directly from switched battery power (+13.8 VDC) from the vehicle. For this mode of operation, the vehicle switched battery (+13.8 VDC and GND) should be connected, through the appropriate MS connector, to V REG and GND, respectively, at one of the system ports. In addition, a jumper (JP10) must be soldered in place on the printed circuit board. It is important to note that in stand-alone operation, there will be no side-tone in the headset. Receive audio will come from the radio only. Furthermore, since the radio side of the audio path is isolated from the system side by a 600 ohm/600 ohm transformer only (i.e., no U3800 audio amplifier), there will be a reduction in radio audio volume to the headsets in the stand- alone operating mode. To compensate for this, the installer may want to set the radio audio level high using the volume control on the radio. Once this has been accomplished, check the speaker audio level and, if it is too bright, it might be necessary to pad it down to a comfortable listening level. Finally, due to excessive alternator noise in some vehicles, it may be necessary to insert a line filter in the 13.8 V/GND power line (just ahead of the U3814) during standalone operation. This will be especially true if the alternator noise is picked up by the dispatcher during mobile radio transmission. Commercial line filters are relatively inexpensive and are available through most electronics distributors. 30

31 INSTALLATION 1. Select a mounting position where the headset cord will not interfere with the operator s job function or otherwise force actions that may jeopardize safe operation when using the module s PTT button. 2. Mount the U3814 by placing a grommet between each of the four mounting brackets and the mounting surface. Grommets are provided with the module while fasteners are not. The type of fastener selected should be based on mounting considerations. 3. All cords have military type screw-on connectors. Install cords as follows: a. Align key-way slot on cord connector with key in threaded connector on module. b. Insert pins into socket until firmly seated. c. Hand tighten swivel nut on cord connector. 4. C3821 Radio Interface cords are required to connect the radios to the U3814. Following the schematic supplied with the C3821, install each cord to its respec tive radio. 5. A C38-XX Jumper Cord, of desired length, is required to connect the U3814 to a U3800 Master Station. Connect one end of the C38-XX to one of the system connectors on the U3814 and other end to the Remote Output on the U3800. OPERATION 1. The receive audio of the selected radio will be heard in all the U3800 system headsets. 2. To transmit over the selected radio, depress and hold the radio PTT bufton and talk into the headset microphone. Release the bufton to listen. NOTE: Radio speakers mounted near the headset may produce feedback, causing a squeal when transmitting. If this occurs, measures may have to be taken to reposition speakers or to add a cut-off switch to the speaker line. 3. To transmit over the selected radio using the C3023 headset adapter, depress and hold the remote PTT bufton and talk into the headset microphone. Release the bufton to listen. The C3023 headset adapter also contains headset jack, listen level control and 15 foot extended coil cord. 31
