13 Product overview Chapter 1 Product overview 1.1 Business Cordless Telephony The DCT1800-S system is a Digital Cordless Telephone system based on the DECT standard. DECT stands for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications. The DCT1800-S system is Generic Access Profile (GAP) compliant. GAP is a communication protocol standard within DECT, that guarantees compatibility of systems and components. The DCT1800-S system can be combined with all DECT-GAP compliant products for cordless telephony. The DCT1800-S system enables the user of a cordless phone to make and receive telephone calls anywhere in the area covered by the cordless system. Access to the system is protected. Only cordless phones subscribed to the system can make and receive calls. During a call nobody can eavesdrop on the conversation. The Digital Cordless Telephone system DCT1800-S can be connected to any PABX (Private Automatic Branch Exchange) with analogue lines. The DCT1800-S system is easy to install with very simple tools in a short time. The complete system as delivered has been factory tested. 1.2 System overview System configuration The main building blocks of the digital cordless telephone system are: Cordless phones Base stations Radio exchange Further options: Printer Cordless System Manager (CSM) for Windows 1, a Windows based software package 13
14 Product overview The system coverage is established by means of a pico-cellular network, consisting of a number of base stations connected to the radio exchange (see figure 1). The user can walk within the covered area while maintaining the call, without degradation of speech quality. 15 Product overview Cordless phones The cordless phone gives access to all the functions of the PABX, using the same codes as on a normal fixed phone. Any business cordless phone that is DECT-GAP compliant can be used. Preferably Ericsson DECT-GAP compliant business cordless phones are used (type DT288, DT368 etc.) The cordless phones are connected to the base stations via a radio link: the DECT air interface. For information on the cordless phone, see the cordless phone user s guide Base stations While within range of a base station, phone calls can be made and received using the cordless phone. Via the DECT air interface, the base station transmits speech data to the cordless phone and receives speech data from it. The range of a base station depends on the propagation characteristics in the building (see paragraph 2.3). To allow for flexibility in coverage area, the base station BS330-GAP with internal antennas and the BS340-GAP with external antennas are available. Up to 8 base stations can be used. The speech data is sent from the radio exchange to the base station, and vice versa, via a cable. This cable contains 2 unshielded twisted-pairs of wires that also supply power to the base station. Depending on the electrical characteristics of the cable and the distance between base station and radio exchange, an additional twisted wire pair (EPP: Express Power Pair) is used to supply power to the base station Radio exchange The radio exchange comprises a cabinet, with main board, power supply and 1 up to maximally 5 LTU boards (type LTU for DCT1800-S, LTU is short for Line Termination Unit). The main board is one board, but functionally divided into 4 units: 1 CPU: Central Processing Unit. 1 CLU: The Cell Link Unit handles the base station communication. 2 SPUs: The Speech Processing Units handle the speech processing. 15
16 Product overview These functional units CPU, CLU and SPU are shown in CSM, together with the LTU units. The LTU boards are the analogue interface between radio exchange and the PABX (Private Automatic Branch Exchange). Calls are always routed via the LTU boards in the radio exchange, and the PABX. The LTU boards are connected to the PABX with 1 up to 8 subscriber lines. For each cordless phone a connection is required Printer (option) Optionally a printer can be connected to the radio exchange. The printer can be used to print service messages from the cordless system. 1.3 Cordless System Manager for Windows (option) Cordless System Manager (CSM) for Windows is a software package to be installed on a PC with Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0. CSM is required to: Set up the DCT 1800-S system and make it operational Expand the cordless system with cordless phones or base stations Examine the cordless system, e.g. in case of troubleshooting For more information on CSM for Windows, see the help file of it. The PC with CSM has to be connected to the radio exchange with the RS232 cable delivered. When a printer is connected to the PC, CSM for Windows can be used to print a service form. Note For remote maintenance via a modem, see chapter
17 Product overview 1.4 Safety and precautions Warning For personal protection and to avoid damaging the system: Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the equipment and in this manual. Improper handling and not following safety instructions might result in a risk of danger or damage Safety rules Do not install the radio exchange if serious transport damage has occurred. A damaged radio exchange may be electrically unsafe. Ensure that the voltage and frequency of the mains power socket matches the voltage and frequency inscribed on the equipment s electrical rating label. Never open the radio exchange cabinet when it is powered. Before any action within the radio exchange, first disconnect the plug from the power socket. Adding and replacing components in a powered radio exchange is dangerous for life and may damage the components. Never push objects of any kind through openings in the equipment. Dangerous voltages may be present. Conductive foreign objects could produce a short circuit that could cause fire, electric shock, or damage to the equipment. Never install telephone wiring during a thunderstorm. Never touch un-insulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been disconnected at the network interface. Observe all relevant safety standards when installing or modifying telephone lines. Always install conform to relevant national installation rules. When adding or replacing an LTU board, make sure it is approved for that country (see 1.4.4) Only mount the radio exchange on a wall. 17
18 Product overview Make sure that the radio exchange is connected to a grounded mains socket. Make sure that the radio exchange cover is screwed with all screws, otherwise the earthing of the radio exchange is not guaranteed. When connecting the power cable to the radio exchange, be careful not to lift the radio exchange off its mounting bracket. Make sure all LTU board slots are closed after installation: with an LTU board or an LTU cover strap. An open LTU slot may cause electrically unsafe situations. Use only approved spare parts and accessories. The operation of nonapproved parts cannot be guaranteed and may even cause damage or danger. Contact your dealer for more information EMC installation requirements The EMC compliance and proper functioning of the radio exchange is guaranteed if and only if: The radio exchange cover is closed and screwed with all screws. The cables and connectors as prescribed in paragraph 3.4. are used. The delivered ferrites are fixed to the subscriber lines from LTU boards to PABX (see paragraph 3.4.2). Only use the ferrites delivered. The system is installed as prescribed in this manual. The radio exchange is connected to a grounded mains socket Environmental requirements The areas where the radio exchange and base stations are to be installed must comply with the following requirements, otherwise the compliance with the regulations and standards from chapter 12 is not guaranteed. Do not use the DCT1800-S in environments with danger of explosion. If you have any questions regarding your operational environment, please contact your dealer. The DCT1800-S system must be used indoors only. 18
19 Product overview The air must be free from dust and smoke. The air must not contain gases or acid fumes that can affect the condition of metal parts or insulation materials. The radio exchange ambient operating temperature may vary between +0 C and +40 C and the relative humidity may vary between 20% and 80%, non condensing. The radio exchange requires at least 0.2 m free space above. To the left and to the right, at least 0.1 m free space is required. Below the radio exchange there must be at least 0.3 m free space. Free space is necessary for air circulation and ease of installation and maintenance. It is recommended to fix the mounting bracket about 1.60 m above the floor. When the radio exchange has been installed, make sure its ventilation holes are all unblocked. Otherwise the radio exchange may become overheated. The base station ambient operating temperature may vary between 10 C and +55 C and the relative humidity may vary between 20% and 90%, non condensing (for free space around the base station, see paragraph 3.6.). The equipment must not be exposed to direct sunlight. Every effort should be made to place the base stations and especially the radio exchange in a quiet EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference) environment Legal restriction when directly connecting to PSTN The DCT1800-S system can be connected to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), with a legal restriction per country. Legal restriction for countries part of European Community or European Free Trade Association When the LTU interface board type RTM/ROFNB /2 is directly connected to the PSTN, this LTU board is not nationally type approved for use of the pulse dialling and register recall functions. Both functions are not intended to be used for direct PSTN connection. When using these functions and directly connecting to the PSTN, the CE marking on the RTM/ROFNB /2 is not covering these functions. 19
20 Product overview All other LTU RTM/ROFNB /2 functions that take care of cordless phone to PSTN interworking are covered by European standards (see chapter 12). These functions can be used without legal restrictions when directly connected to the PSTN. The equipment has been approved in accordance with Council Decision 98/482/EC for pan-european single terminal connection to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). However, due to differences between the individual PSTNs provided in different countries, the approval does not, of itself, give an unconditional assurance of successful operation on every PSTN network termination point. In the event of problems, you should contact your equipment supplier in the first instance. Throughout this manual the word PABX is used for both PABX and PSTN, with the legal restriction noted Safety symbols For personal protection and to avoid damage to the system the following symbols are used on the cordless system: Caution sign according to ISO 3864, meaning: Read and follow the safety rules and warning messages described. If instructions are not followed, there is risk of damage to the equipment. Warning sign meaning: hazardous voltages are present. If the instructions are not followed, there is risk of electrical shock and danger to personal health. Caution. Boards which contain components sensitive to ElectroStatic Discharge (ESD) are indicated by this sign. Take ESD precautions when handling these boards. 20
21 Planning the cordless system Chapter 2 Planning the cordless system 2.1 Planning steps Planning the cordless system consists of: Planning the number of LTU boards: see paragraph 2.2 Planning the number of base stations and their locations: see paragraph 2.3 Planning the radio exchange location: see paragraph Planning the number of LTU boards The LTU boards are the connection between radio exchange and PABX. One LTU board has connectors for 8 subscriber lines, making possible the use of 8 cordless phones. Up to 5 LTU boards can be used, so maximally 40 cordless phones can be used. 2.3 Planning the base stations Base station coverage Planning the base station locations is necessary to cover the required area with a minimum number of base stations and good speech quality. Incorrect planning results in either too many or too few base stations. Having too few base stations results in bad speech quality. Factors to be taken into account when planning the base stations are: Typical cell sizes of base station coverage Requirements for base station locations Absorption and reflection of radio waves in the building Departmental differences in the building Environmental requirements (see paragraph 1.4.3). The next sections describe these factors in more detail, concluding with a summary of the steps to plan the base stations. 21
22 Planning the cordless system Base station cell sizes The cell size is an important parameter in determining the placement of the base stations. See table 1 for typical BS330 and BS340 cell sizes. The radiation pattern of the BS330 base station has a forward bias whereas the radiation pattern of the BS340 with standard external antennas is omni-directional. The height of the coverage area is somewhat less than its diameter. The precise size and shape depend on what material the walls and floors are made of, the position and material of furniture, machines, air-conditioning and the position of the base station in such an environment. 22

This reduces the effective covered area. An exception is of course when an outdoor area has to be covered, e.g. a car park. Base stations should not be mounted on metal surfaces. Base stations should not be mounted on reinforced concrete walls or columns. Coverage to the rear of such structures is greatly reduced. Base stations may partially cover the floors immediately above and below. The useful range through floors and ceiling varies between 0 and 8 m (2 floors) in radius; see figure 3. Base stations should not be surrounded by large metal objects. Base stations should be mounted high enough to prevent accidental tampering with cables. Base stations should be mounted at least 1 m from fluorescent lamps. 23
24 Planning the cordless system Each base station can handle up to 8 telephone calls simultaneously. Sometimes in an area more than 8 calls must be handled simultaneously, e.g. in a canteen. Then an extra base station is required in that area. This influences the actual base station cell sizes. Take the following into account: The cell size depends mainly on the material of walls, ceilings and floors. Any form of concrete, wood and plaster, all absorb and reflect radio waves in a different way. 24
25 Planning the cordless system Metal walls and large metal cabinet rows reflect all signals and result in a greatly reduced coverage to the rear of such areas. X-ray rooms are screened off by walls covered with lead and do not allow radio signals to enter. Computer rooms in banks, warehouses, etc. are protected against unwanted interference and do not allow radio signals to enter. Exhibition halls or production halls may reflect more than normal office environment due to huge metal structures. This interference reduces the effective capacity and coverage range per base station Departmental differences When planning base stations take into consideration the following departmental differences: Central areas, giving access to stairs and elevators, may require extra base stations due to heavier constructions. Coverage in elevators may require base stations closer to, or in, the elevator shaft. Corners and irregularities in the construction (partial renovation, extensions of older buildings, etc.) can influence the coverage. Concentration of air-conditioning ducts etc. can influence the coverage. Note that each base station can handle up to 8 telephone calls simultaneously. Therefore in some places an extra base station may be necessary, e.g. in a canteen Steps to plan the base stations To plan the base stations, carry out the following steps: 1. Obtain the floor plan of the building or area where you must provide for base station coverage. 2. Determine the required number of base stations and their location: a. Select the applicable cell sizes for the base stations (see table 1, page 22). Note that the coverage area of the BS330 and BS340 are different (see figure 2, page 23). 25
26 Planning the cordless system b. Determine the position of the base stations, checking with the previous guidelines. 3. Mark all base station positions on the floor plan. Mark also the orientation of the base station, so that the forward bias is accounted for. Indicate the expected cell size for each base station (see figure 3, page 24 for an example). 4. Determine the location of the radio exchange (see 2.4) and mark it on the floor plan also. 2.4 Planning the radio exchange location When planning the radio exchange take into account the following guidelines: The radio exchange has, preferably, to be mounted in a restricted area. In any case, make sure that the power cable cannot be pulled out of the radio exchange or mains socket unintentionally. The radio exchange must be easily accessible for installation and maintenance. The mains wall-socket must be near the radio exchange and must be easily accessible. The plug of the power cord is used to switch off the radio exchange in case of emergency. The mains wall-socket must be grounded. The distance between radio exchange and base station is maximally 1.9 km. Observe the environmental requirements from paragraph
27 Installing the system Chapter 3 Installing the system 3.1 Before starting... This chapter describes how to install the radio exchange and the base stations. Before starting installation, please read: Safety and precautions, paragraph 1.4. Planning the cordless system, chapter 2. It is advised to make a location plan for base stations and radio exchange. Warning Never open the radio exchange cabinet when it is connected to a power socket. Installing and maintaining an open and powered radio exchange is dangerous for life and may damage the radio exchange components. 3.2 Installation tools The following installation tools are required: A set of torx screw drivers Crosshead screw driver Modular jack crimp tool (RJ12, RJ45) Cable stripper Stripping pliers Telephone pliers (long nose) Drill machine 6 mm and 8 mm borer Cordless System Manager software (on PC with Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0) 27

See paragraph 4.2.) 30 Installing the system 3.4 Cables and connectors Overview Table 2 gives an overview of the radio exchange connections to the other parts of the cordless system. Note Base station and subscriber cables have to be made and cannot be ordered. 31 Installing the system Subscriber lines The 2-wire subscriber lines connect PABX and LTU boards. These cables (standard telecom) have an RJ12 connector on the LTU side. The connector on the PABX side depends on the PABX. Fixing the ferrites The DCT1800-S system is delivered with 10 ferrites. These ferrites must be fixed to the subscriber lines from the LTU board to PABX. Applying the ferrites is required to prevent EMC problems and to guarantee compliance with European and international regulations and standards. Note Please use 1 ferrite per 4 subscriber lines. For 1 up to 4 subscriber lines on an LTU board, use 1 ferrite. For 5 up to 8 subscriber lines on an LTU board, use 2 ferrites. Only use the ferrites delivered with the system. 31
32 Installing the system To fix the ferrites: 1. Click the ferrite(s) around the subscriber lines, at a distance of ca. 10 cm from the connectors to the LTU board. If the ferrite is fixed too close to the connectors, it is impossible to connect the connectors to the LTU board. Make sure the eye for the tie-wrap is at the bottom-side of the ferrite. 2. Put the tie-wrap through the eye at the bottom-side of the ferrite. 3. Tighten the tie-wrap around the subscriber lines. 33 Installing the system Base station cables The base station cable must be a twisted-pair cable with 2 pairs minimum for connection of the data lines. Power is also distributed via these data pairs. A 3-pair cable may be used when additional power wires are required to increase the distance between base station and radio exchange. The extra pair is called Express Power Pair: EPP. Table 3, page 33 gives an overview of the cable and powering options. The cable must have RJ45 modular jacks on both sides (see figure 7). Note Wires of the same twisted pair may be interchanged. Wires of different pairs may not be interchanged. The EPP pair is also insensitive for polarity reversal. The RJ45 connector is connected the same way on both cable sides. 35 Installing the system 3.5 Mounting the radio exchange 1. Mount the mounting bracket on the wall (see figure 8): a. Drill the holes (8 mm borer), 205 mm centre to centre distance. b. Insert the plugs (8 mm plug, enclosed) c. Screw the bracket to the wall with the delivered screws (crosshead screws 4.5 x 60 mm). The base of the radio exchange has to be minimally 0.3 m above the floor. It is recommended to fix the mounting bracket about 1.60 m above the floor for ease of installation and maintenance. Make sure the power cable can be connected to a grounded wall-socket. 36 Installing the system 2. Mount the radio exchange on the mounting bracket. Hinge the radio exchange behind the hooks of the bracket. See figure Fig. 9 Mounting the radio exchange 3. Stick the brand label in the front cover recess. 4. Now you can mount the base stations: see paragraph
37 Installing the system 3.6 Mounting the base stations Mounting possibilities Base stations can be mounted vertically or horizontally. However, base station BS340 can not be mounted with the antennas pointing downwards as the mounting bracket does not support it. Mount the base stations in the positions and directions indicated in the base station location plan (see paragraph 2.3.6). Before installing the base stations read: Safety and precautions, paragraph 1.4. Planning the base stations, paragraph Wall mounting a base station Fix the mounting bracket (see figure 10) to the wall as follows: 1. Hold the mounting bracket with its flat side against the wall such that the text TOP is the right way up, and mark the two holes (57 mm centre to centre distance). The minimum distance between the upper hole and the ceiling, or any object above the base station BS330, must be at least 65 mm (see figure 10). For the base station BS340 with standard external antennas the minimum distance is 115 mm (see figure 10). If other external antennas are used the minimum distance must be adapted likewise. Otherwise the base station cannot be slid onto the bracket and no antennas can be placed. 37

Using cable ducts When the base station is fixed to the wall, cable ducts can be used to route the wiring through. Fix the cable duct to the wall in one of the positions shown in figure 12. 40 Installing the system Ceiling mounting a base station Ceiling mounting is the same as wall mounting (see paragraph 3.6.2). If the base station has to be positioned above a suspended ceiling, ensure that the front of the base station BS330 points downwards. For the BS340 base station there are no special requirements Pole or beam mounting a base station The mounting bracket can be fixed to a pole (diameter 45 mm) or a beam (wider than 50 mm) by means of a strap or flexible metal band less than 30 mm wide. The strap or flexible metal band must be purchased locally. Fix the mounting bracket to a pole or beam such that the arrow points upwards and the text TOP is right way up (see figure 13). Note The mounting bracket can be used with both sides backwards. On a flat surface, the flat side of the mounting bracket has to be backwards. On a rounded surface, e.g. on a pole, the rounded side has to be backwards. But in both cases, make sure the text TOP is right way up. Otherwise the base station will fall off the mounting bracket. 40

45 Installing the system 3.7 Completing the connections When the radio exchange and base stations have been mounted, all connections can be made to the radio exchange: PABX: connect LTU boards and PABX with the subscriber cables. 47 Making the system operational Chapter 4 Making the system operational 4.1 Switching on the system Once the cordless system has been installed completely, you can switch it on: 1. Plug the power plug of the radio exchange in the power socket. 2. Switch on the radio exchange with the on/off switch. Herewith the base stations are switched on also. 48 Making the system operational 4.2 Setting up the DCT1800-S system The main steps to set-up a DCT1800-S system, using CSM, are: 1. Install CSM on a PC with Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT Connect the PC with CSM to the radio exchange with the RS232 cable (see figure 20). l PC connector (RS232) Fig. 20 PC connector: bottom side radio exchange 3. Start CSM. Check the help file for more information on CSM. 4. Set COM port and baud rate (2400, 4800 and 9600 baud supported) for connection to the cordless system. 5. Connect CSM to the cordless system (CSM software function). 6. When the cordless system is not yet initialised: initialise it. The CSM software will guide you. Your distributor password is requested. When initialising, the B-ARI number has to be entered. B-ARI is short for B-class Access Right Indicator. The B-ARI is a unique number for the cordless system. It is one of the security measures preventing unauthorised use. The B-ARI number is on the certificate delivered with the system. 7. Add base stations. 48
49 Making the system operational 8. Add one or more extension numbers to the LTU boards (maximum 8 numbers per LTU board). 9. Subscribe the cordless phones, one by one, to an extension number. See the help file for CSM and the user guide for the cordless phone. 10. Make a back-up of the cordless system database. In case of troubles or replacing the radio exchange, the database can be restored. Restoring the database makes it unnecessary to initialise and configure the cordless system again. 4.3 Switching off the system Once operational, the system should not be switched off unless it needs maintenance or expanding. When switched off, all system data remain stored in the radio exchange. Note Even when disconnected from the mains the system data remain stored, except date and time. When disconnected from the mains for more than 2 days, the system date and time are lost. They can be set again with CSM. 49

51 Checking the system Chapter 5 Checking the system 5.1 Checking possibilities The proper functioning of the cordless system can be checked by: Inspecting the radio exchange LEDs Inspecting the base station LEDs Testing the base station coverage If one of the tests fails, see chapter 6, Fixing problems. Tip CSM gives a detailed overview of the cordless system and its status. You can check the service messages and print a service form. 5.2 Radio exchange LEDs Figure 21 gives an overview of the LEDs on the radio exchange (bottom side). LED2 - LED6 (red) indicate fault situations when on. Table 4 gives a more detailed description of the LEDs. 51

If the error message has been read but the problem has not been solved, LED3 - LED6 will stay on as long as the problem is not solved. 54 Checking the system 5.4 Calling test This test checks for each cordless phone the complete connection from radio exchange to PABX. The test is performed by calling all cordless phones using one cordless phone, designated cordless phone A. Note Make sure the cordless phones to be tested are in the coverage area of a base station. 1. Put all cordless phones in order of extension number on a table. 2. Switch each cordless phone off-hook, check if you hear the dial tone and then switch it on-hook again. 3. Call, using cordless phone A, all the other cordless phones sequentially. Check that the cordless phone with the corresponding number on its display rings when called. 4. Call cordless phone A, using any other phone, and check if A rings. 5.5 Base station coverage test With this test the base station planning can be verified. Good speech quality must be maintained when walking in the coverage area. 1. With one cordless phone call another cordless phone and check the speech quality when walking in the coverage area. 2. If areas are found where speech quality is not satisfactory, re-position the base stations until good speech quality is obtained. 54
55 Fixing problems Chapter 6 Fixing problems 6.1 What to check first... This chapter describes the corrective actions to be taken if the system is not working properly. Warning Some faults require the assistance of your supplier. Do not try to solve these faults yourself: incorrect actions may cause danger or damage the cordless system. In case of problems, first check the following: 1. Is the radio exchange switched on and powered properly? 2. Are all cables connected properly? 3. Are the base stations added with CSM? 4. Are the cordless phones subscribed with CSM? 5. If these checks do not solve the problem, go to paragraph 6.2 Resetting the cordless system In case of problems, you can try resetting the cordless system: Switch the system off, waiting half a minute and switch it on again. Or reset using CSM. After a reset, the system must function properly within 90 seconds, with no red LEDs on. Tip CSM can give a detailed overview of the cordless system and its status. You can check the service messages, or create a service form. 55

Each question can be answered with Yes or No. Depending on the answer either take the action described, or continue the procedure. If Continue is followed by a number, jump to that number. Otherwise continue at the next question. 6.3 Power-up problems 1. Is the power LED1 on the radio exchange on green? (See figure 21, page 51) Yes: System is powered. Try another fault area: see paragraph 6.2. No: Continue. 2. Is the radio exchange switched on with the power switch? Yes: Continue. No: Switch it on. 3. Is the power cable connected properly to the mains socket and the radio exchange? Yes: Continue No: Connect the power cable properly. 56
57 Fixing problems 4. Is power present on the mains socket? Yes: The power supply is defective: contact your supplier. No: Problem is in the mains. 6.4 LED2 on radio exchange on (red) If LED2 (see figure 22, page 53) on the radio exchange is on (red), start the CSM software and check the following: 1. Is an LTU board malfunctioning? Yes: Reset the LTU board with CSM. If still malfunctioning, replace the defective LTU board (see paragraph 8.2). No: Continue. 2. Is a base station possibly not present? (Check in CSM) Yes: Check the base station cables. If correct, continue. The connection between radio exchange and base station may be broken, or possibly was broken for a short time. No: Continue. 3. Is a base station malfunctioning? (Check CSM and the LEDs on the base station.) Yes: Reset the base station. If still malfunctioning, continue. No: Continue at Check the supply voltage at the base station (SCO, SC1 or EPP if connected). Is the voltage more than 24 V all the time? Yes: If the voltage is more than 24 V, check if the base station is defective. If the base station is defective, replace it. If OK, continue. No: If the voltage is less than 24 V, the base station cables may be too long. In that case fault code 11 is given in the service message to that base station. Check the length, shorten the cables or use an EPP power pair. If cables are correct, continue. 57
58 Fixing problems 5. Try resetting the entire system again. After a reset, the system must function properly within 90 seconds, with no red LEDs on. Is any red LED still on 90 seconds after resetting? Yes: No: The main board of the radio exchange is defective. The radio exchange has to be replaced, see paragraph 8.3. System is OK now. 6.5 Complaints of more users 1. All cordless phones see no system, although they are subscribed? Yes: Check LTU boards, base stations and cables. If OK, the main board of the radio exchange is defective. The radio exchange has to be replaced, see 8.3. No: Continue. 2. Complaints come from a specific area? Yes: Continue at 3. No: Continue at Are calls being blocked when trying to make a call in a specific area? Yes: Not enough base stations in that area or defective base station. Check the base stations. Note that each base station can handle up to 8 telephone calls simultaneously. If all OK, place more base stations. No: Poor coverage. Check the positioning and number of base stations. 4. Are calls being blocked, when trying to make a call? Yes: The DCT1800-S system can handle maximally 16 calls simultaneously and maximally 8 simultaneous calls per base station. If less than 16 simultaneous calls can be made, the radio exchange is defective. Contact your supplier. No: Try another fault area (see paragraph 6.2). 58
59 Fixing problems 6.6 Complaint of one user 1. Cordless phone shows normal display? (See cordless phone user s guide.) Yes: Continue. No: See the cordless phone user s guide. 2. Go off hook. Do you hear a dial tone? Yes: Continue at 5. No: Try going off hook again, the base station may be overloaded. If still no dial tone is heard, continue. 3. Do other cordless phones give a dial tone when off hook? Yes: Check the connection between radio exchange and PABX for that cordless phone. Check number plan of cordless phones and connections. No: Check all connections from the radio exchange to PABX and base stations. If still no dial tone is heard, try another fault area (see paragraph 6.2). 4. If a dial tone is heard: dial an extension number of the PABX which is known to be in service. Does it ring? Yes: Continue at 5. No: PABX or radio exchange defective. Contact your supplier. 5. Call in progress, is everything as normal? Yes: Everything is OK. No: The cordless phone or the radio exchange has a speech circuit problem. Try a different cordless phone. If the fault persists, the problem is in the radio exchange: see paragraph 8.3 for replacing. 59
60 Fixing problems 6.7 Various problems Date and time on the cordless system are not correct. Use CSM to set date and time. Cordless phone number and phone do not match: the wrong phone rings when an extension number is called. Check the connections between LTU board and PABX. The lines are probably not connected according to plan. A cordless phone is lost, and may be misused. Unsubscribe that cordless phone with CSM. 60
61 Expanding the system Chapter 7 Expanding the system 7.1 Possible expansions The DCT1800-S system can be expanded up to maximally: 40 cordless phones 5 LTU boards 8 base stations 7.2 Adding cordless phones You can add cordless phones with CSM: 1. Check if there is a free extension number. If necessary, add new free ones. 2. Subscribe the cordless phones to free extension numbers, one by one. 61
62 Expanding the system 7.3 Adding LTU boards. Warning Never open the radio exchange cabinet when it is connected to a power socket. Adding LTU boards in a powered radio exchange is dangerous for life and will damage the LTU boards. Caution Do not touch the components on the LTU board. Touching the components may cause ESD damage. Hold the LTU board at the bracket. Take ESD precautions. Caution The LTU boards have to be put from the left to the right in the radio exchange. Take care not to push the LTU board against other LTU boards or the housing. The LTU board components can easily be damaged. 1. Switch the radio exchange off and disconnect the plug from the power socket. 2. Open the radio exchange (see figure 23): a. Unscrew the cover screws at the bottom side, with a torx screw driver (1). b. Put your fingers in the cut-away at the top back side of the cover (2). c. Pull up the cover a little bit, while holding the bottom side of the cover to prevent it from falling (3). d. Pull the cover a little bit to you, and remove it from the radio exchange (4). 62
