The STARTER 3000 has an excellent price/performance ratio and are designed with many useful features. You will find much helpful functionality in the meter. The housing of the instrument is not gas tight (explosion hazard due to spark formation, corrosion caused by the ingress of gases) When using chemicals and solvents, comply with the instructions of the producer and the general lab safety rules Measures for operational safety Do not unscrew the two halves of the housing Dry off any liquid spills immediately! 7 2 Installation Carefully unpack the meter, insert the right adapter clip into the power adapter slot as illustrated below. 2.1 Package contents The model ST3000-B has the following items ST3000-B Units STARTER 3000 meter 1 Standalone electrode holder 1 ph Buffer Power Set (4.01, 7.00, 10.01) 1 set In addition to ST3000-B package content, the model ST3000 package also includes the following: ST310 3-in-1 ph electrode Installing the electrode arm Install the electrode arm on the base. Adjust the tension knob as required. 5

8 To move the stand alone electrode holder, please take the base of the holder. 3 STARTER 3000 operation 3.1 Calibration Buffer group The Starter 3000 ph meter allows you to perform 1-, 2- or 3- point calibrations. The 4 calibration buffer group is predefined in the meter, after selecting the calibration buffer (see 4.4), the buffers are automatically recognized and displayed during calibration (auto buffer recognition). b (at 25 C) b (at 25 C) b (at 25 C) b (at 25 C) The default setting of predefined group is: b (at 25 C) Starter 3000 ph meters automatically corrects for the temperature dependence of the buffer ph values given in the table. 9 Performing calibration Place the electrode in a calibration buffer and press Cal. Cal 1 is blinking during calibration. After immersing the electrode into the buffer, stir and wait for 1 minute, press Cal to finish 1 point calibration, the relevant buffer value is displayed and stored; the Cal 2 is blinking, you have 2 choices now: 1) Press Read to exit calibration and return to the sample measurement. 2) Or perform the second point calibration, immerse the electrode into the second buffer, stir and wait for 1 minute, then press Cal to finish 2 point calibration. Now you have 2 choices: 1) Press Read to exit calibration, the offset value and the slope are then shown on the display for 3 seconds and return to the sample measurement. 2) Or immerse the electrode into the third buffer, stir and wait for 1 minute, press Cal to finish 3 point calibration, the offset value and the slope are then shown on the display for 3 seconds and return to sample measurement automatically. Note: With the 1-point calibration only the offset is adjusted. If the sensor was previously calibrated with multi-point calibration the previously stored slope will remain. Otherwise theoretical 100% slope ( mv / ph) will be used. The use of a temperature electrode or an electrode with a built-in temperature sensor is recommended. If you use the MTC mode, you should enter the correct temperature value and keep all buffer and sample solutions at the set temperature. To ensure the most accurate ph measurement, you should perform a calibration once a day. 3.2 Sample measurement ph measurement Place the electrode in the sample and press Read to start the measurement. The automatic endpoint is the default setting of the meter. When the signal has stabilized, the sample reading freezes, the endpoint stability and auto endpoint icons freeze on the display. By pressing and holding Read, you can switch between the auto and manual endpoint modes. In manually endpoint the endpoint stability icon will show on the display when the meter judge the signal has stabilized, the reading is not freezing mv measurement To switch to mv mode, press ph/mv. To perform an mv measurement, follow the same procedure as for ph measurement. 3.3 Temperature measurement For better accuracy, we recommend the use of either a built-in or a separate temperature probe. If a temperature probe is used, ATC and the sample temperature are displayed. 7

10 Note: The meter accepts an NTC 30 kω temperature sensor. 3.4 Using the memory Storing a reading The STARTER 3000 ph meter can store up to 1024 measurement reading. There are 3 store modes: 1) When P3 and P4 setting is Off (default setting), you can save the measurement reading manually. During ph or mv measurement, when endpointed, or displays. Then press up button will store the current endpointing measurement reading. M+ displays, and the number nearby M+ means the memory sequence. e.g. M+ 18 means the current storage is the 18th storage in the memory database, M+ 18 displays about 5 seconds then disappear. 2) When P3 setting is ON (see 4.5, manually saving does not work), M+ displays, the endpoint mode will be auto endpoint mode, when measurement auto endpointed, display, meter will store the measurement reading automatically. If change the endpoint mode to manual endpoint ( ) by press and hold Read for 3 seconds, the meter will not store the measurement reading any more. 3) When P4 setting is ON (see 4.6, manually saving and auto endpoint saving does not work), that means you choose a time interval (e.g. 2 minutes) in the setting, and M+ display in the screen. The meter will store measurement result every 2 minutes. The shortest time interval is 1 minute, the longest time interval is 60 minutes Recalling from memory During ph or mv measurement, press Down button to recall the stored results from memory. RM displays on the screen. The latest stored measurement reading will display first, (e.g. RM 18 ) Press up or down buttons to scroll through the stored readings. Press Read to return to measurement mode Clearing the memory Under the measurement mode, pressing and hold down buttons for 3 seconds, CLr blinks in the screen. Press Down button to confirm clearing the memory, or press Read to return to the measurement mode without deleting the data. 8

11 4 Setup 4.1 Endpoint mode The automatic endpoint is the default setting of the meter. By pressing and holding Read for 3 seconds, you can switch between the auto and manual endpoint modes. In auto endpoint mode, press Read to start the measurement, then the meter judge the endpoint automatically and lock the endpoint reading. In manually endpoint mode, press Read to start the measurement, stability icon will show on the display when the meter judge that the signal has stabilized, the reading is not freezing, the meter is still on measurement. 4.2 Manual temperature compensation Under measurement mode, if the meter does not detect a temperature sensor, it automatically switches to the manual temperature compensation mode and MTC appears. Press up or down buttons to increase or decrease the value to the temperature of your sample. Press Read to confirm the setting. The default setting is 25 C. 4.3 Recall recent calibration information Press and hold ph/mv for 3 seconds, meter gets into program setting status P1, you can read recent calibration information (offset and slope) in P1 status with the recent calibration date and time, press up to display offset and slope alternatively. 4.4 Selecting a predefined buffer group Press and hold ph/mv for 3 seconds, meter gets into program setting status P1, press ph/mv to get into P2 status, you can press up button to select the buffer group b1 b2 b3 and b4 (see 3.1.1). Default setting is b1 buffer group (1.68, 4.01, 7.00, at 25 C). 4.5 Set auto endpoint result saving Press and hold ph/mv, meter gets into program setting status P1, press ph/mv twice to get into P3 status, press up buttons to switch between ON and Off. Default setting is Off. When the setting is ON, manually saving does not work, the meter will save auto endpoint reading automatically (see 3.4.1). 4.6 Set interval time saving Press and hold ph/mv, meter gets into program setting status P1, press ph/mv to get into P4 status, press up or down buttons to choose the time interval. The shortest time interval is 1 minute, the longest time interval is 60 minutes. Default setting is Off. When interval times saving is ON, manually saving and auto endpoint saving do not work, the meter will save a measurement result every 1 minute (when the time interval you set is 1 minute). 4.7 Date and Time Pressing and holding ph/mv, meter gets into program setting status P1, press ph/mv to get into P5 status, date and time can be set now, press down to choose the number(hour/minute/mon/day/year) to set, press up to change the number. 9

The STARTER 3000 does not require any maintenance other than occasional wipe with a damp cloth. The button cell battery in the PCB main board may run out in 2 years, when it occurs unscrew the back layout and replace the button cell battery. The housing is made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). This material is attacked by some organic solvents, such as toluene, xylene and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). Any spillage should be immediately wiped off. 5.3 Electrode maintenance Make sure the electrode is filled with electrolyte solution. Always store the electrode according to <General Instruction of ph Electrodes> and do not allow it to dry out. If the electrode response becomes sluggish or the slope is not good enough, try: 1. Soak the electrode in 0.1M HCl overnight 2. For fat or oil build-up, degrease the membrane with cotton wool soaked in either acetone or a soap solution After electrode treatment, a new calibration should be performed. If the electrode slope is still not satisfactory, the electrode might need to be replaced. 10
