3 1 Introduction 1.1 Description The HEO 6001-SC-II kit is used to control an LCoS (Liquid Crystal-on-Silicon) active matrix reflective mode LCD with 1920 X 1080 resolution and a 0.7 diagonal. The signal is addressed via a standard DVI (Digital Visual Interface) signal e.g. by a PC s graphics card. Basically the LCOS display works like an extended monitor. Hence this plug and play kit guaranties a quick start-up and easy usage. The kit is highly programmable and allows a tailored configuration according the specific requirements. Via the RS-232 interface and with the provided software one is able to perform gamma control to configure the modulator for different applications and wavelengths. Besides geometry and gamma corrections different sequences can also be addressed to the driver. 1.2 Deliverables HED 6001 LCoS imager Driver board Power supply DVI cable RS-232 cable Display mount CD with software package and documentation Figure 1: 0,7 HDTV LCOS OEM kit 1.3 General usage guidelines Due to transport reasons the display and the driver unit have to be connected on site. The connection has to be done on an antistatic workstation in order to avoid damages on the driver electronics and / or the display. All plugs of electrical interfaces especially the display to drive board connection has to be done without applied voltage. Even if the DVI is hot plug capable we recommend to boot the PC after connection. Do not use the kit outside buildings and in humid or dusty places and keep the kit away from extreme heat and coldness. Avoid touching the LCD because this might cause damages or reduce its optical quality. This has to be done under antistatic conditions and without applied voltage. Note that the ZIF connector is limited in the contact durability wherefore often connection and disconnection should be avoided. Open the brown connector flap by pulling it up until it is perpendicular to the driver board as shown on the left side of Figure 3. 5 Take the display with face and golden pins up and align the flex straight to the connector. Then feed the flex cable carefully into the connector. Now fix the connector by pressing down the brown plastic flap. If the display is connected correctly, the interface stopper on both sides of the display flex will be interlocked by two tiny white plastic spikes (see close-up Figure 3). 2.3 Mounting the display The standard landscape type phase display comes with a polymer border. The packaging allows a stable holding in the supplied display mount what has a M4 thread. When mounting the display with looking screws, avoid strong forces affecting the display. 7 3 Driver Board The compact electronics drives one LCOS phase display. It requires only a single voltage (5V) supply. Signal input is standard DVI and the 8 Bit data from the green color channel will be used to address the LCOS display. 8 3.3 LED status notifications Status LED s show the current status of the driver. Operations status LED Switching status TP-1 LED Initial phase (9 seconds after short flashing at start up, then off TP-2 LED switching-on) AUX LED off TP-1 LED off During normal operation TP-2 LED flashing every second AUX LED on, if DVI signal is present Table 1: LED status during operations status Figure 7: LED position on drive board 3.4 Power up sequence Connect all components: - Microdisplay to driver unit (see chapter 2.2) - DVI cable to PC and driver unit - RS-232 cable to PC s COM port and driver unit (only necessary for advanced optical settings, not for normal operation) Second monitor for use with double head graphics card with native resolution of 1920x1080 at 60 Hz vertical refresh rate or above is recommended for easy maneuver. The DVI output of the graphics card needs to be activated, e.g. by using the Clone - Function. This can be normally done under Advanced -settings under the menu point Display-Properties Turn on the device by connecting the power cable. At this point you can already use the device. For advanced optical settings and changing the electro-optical response you can use the HOLOEYE GUI (Graphical User Interface) software HOLOEYE Photonics AG Page 8/16

9 4 Software The kit includes a calibration software, easy to use via graphical user interface (GUI). The calibration software can be used to change geometrical settings, brightness, contrast and the electro-optical response by applying a new gamma curve or an other digital drive scheme. This requires a RS-232 communication via COM port of the computer. There are also USB to COM adapter available. Figure 8: Screen shoot of calibration software 4.1 Installation of the calibration software Install the control software by starting the setup.exe from the directory "Setup SLM_GUI_116" and follow the installation assistant. Select a folder were the software will be installed and hit Next to continue HOLOEYE Photonics AG Page 9/16

10 Click Next to continue the installation process. The installation of the calibration software takes only a few seconds while a status bar shows the current progress. Click Finish to exit the installation assistance. 4.2 Calibration software This application serves as configuration editor for the LCOS projection kit. The program can be used to change the alignment of the image on the LC display area, to mirror the image, and to handle the gamma conversion tables which are implemented in the hardware drivers. These tables can be read from the device, viewed in the editor window, as well as saved to and reloaded from disk Establish a connection Once the hardware is connected with the host computer and the appropriate driver has been installed the user interface is ready to communicate with the driver hardware. Start the software HOLOEYE HEO 1080P Interface and choose Connect to Device from the File menu. Choose the Port and select the Green color channel. 11 4.2.2 Changing image position To change the horizontal and vertical position of the image on the LC display select Geometry from the Edit menu. Use the sliders to move the image and the two buttons to flip it. All actions affect the image immediately but are still volatile. To make the changes permanent, select Save to EEPROM from the Options menu Viewing and replacing gamma curves The incoming video signal is converted before applying it to the display using a data look-up table (LUT). This is normally used to perform gamma correction and white / black balance adjustment in color video projectors. With the PLUTO phase modulator one can adapt the phase shift properties according to the specific requirements like the used wavelength etc. The gamma table currently in use is shown automatically, as soon the user has connected with the hardware. Gamma tables can then be stored on and re-loaded from disk. The data format is ASCII, comma-separated value (CSV). This way the data can be easily imported in other applications like e. g. MS Excel. The gamma files have a single value per line. Comments begin with a '#' character and are suppressed when reading a file. If you want to replace an existing gamma table in the driver's hardware, load one from file with File > Load Gamma File and then program it into the hardware with Options > Save to EEPROM. Gamma tables in the HE1080P have a length of 1024 different codes. Though the intensity of each colour is coded in 8 bit only in the video data stream, the additional codes (half and quarter gray steps) are used by a correction circuitry inside the driver chips. When you replace gamma tables you must provide them with 1024 elements. The largest allowed value in a gamma table is influenced by other settings in the driver chip. The technical background is the principle of the voltage generation mechanism for the LC cell. The cell voltage is pulsecode modulated - the optical response is the time integral over the pulsing voltage. The pulse coding is derived from the value found in the gamma table. The definition of the pulse code structure and its length is determined by some parameters, among others the "Bitplane Count", which is the overall length of the pulse code sequence, and the "Number of Binary Bits", which control a binary coded section within the sequence. "Bitplane Count" (=24d) and "Number of Binary Bits" (=6d) are not changeable with this driver program. 12 4.2.4 Advanced driver configurations Configuration status of the driver: The Info tab on the Driver Options dialog shows the basic configuration of the hardware. All information are read-only. The system architecture was originally designed for full-colour operation. In such a system each colour channel has its own driver chip. The example shown is valid for a monochrome system where only the green channel is assembled as it is usual for e. g. holographic applications. The software scans for available driver chips and displays the Chip ID for the chips that have been found. The LCD Dimension is the amount of physical columns and lines of the panel. These values are stored inside the driver ASIC and must meet those of the attached panel. They are required to generate the correct clocking scheme for the panel. In the example an ASI6001 panel with a physical resolution of 1952 x 1088 dots is driven by the ASIC. The Display Resolution represents the format of the incoming image data. The driver boards are configured for a dedicated image format (1920 x 1080 dots in this case) and force the graphic card to generate exactly that format and timing. The values in Bitplane and Sequencer Prescale refer to the circuitry that forms a pulse code (bitplane sequence) for a certain grey level. In the example the grey values are converted into 24 different pulses of which 6 are binary weighted ("Binary Bits") and 18 are equally weighted ("Thermometer Bits"). The Sequencer Prescale value is a divider register inside the ASIC which determines how fast the pulse codes are transferred from the ASIC to the panel. The Firmware field shows the program version of the microcontroller on the driver board. The ANF field shows the version of the board and driver ASIC configuration. These data, the All NVRAM File, is stored in an electrically programmable non volatile memory on the driver board. This configuration can be overwritten by the driver software. Each time when a new configuration is loaded into the board the Last ANF Update field is refreshed by the software. The NVRAM Size field gives number and size of the NVRAM devices on the driver board. The System Type field finally shows whether the panel is black or white when no electrical field is applied to the cells. The Read button refreshes all fields by gathering all data from the board once again. Setting the Black and White Voltages: The control elements on the Digital Potentiometers tab let you Setting Black and White Voltage of the LC display via digital variable resistors (DVRs). The White Voltage can be set using the V (Bright) slider and is the voltage seen by the liquid crystal cell when the maximum gamma table value generates the cell voltage. 13 allowed gamma table value is 1216 decimal with the current setting of BIT_PLANE_COUNT = 24 and NBR_OF_BINARY_BITS = 6. The Black Voltage can be set using the V (Dark) slider and is the voltage seen by the liquid crystal cell when a gamma table value of zero generates the cell voltage. Black and white voltage can be set independently with the sliders. Since this function is realized with two variable resistors in the driver circuitry the program must consider their lower and upper limits. Therefore not all combinations of V (Dark) and V (Bright) are possible. The lower two bars give a graphical representation of the resistors and their wiper position between 0 and 63 decimal. The Save to NVRAM button lets you store the setting of black and white voltage permanently in the NVRAM. The Restore button resets the controls to those values which they had when the driver options dialog appeared on screen. Can be used after playing around with the sliders to discard changes. This button does not affect the NVRAM. The Read button reinitializes the user interface with the voltage setting found in the driver board. Reading and Writing EEPROMs The EEPROMs tab gives access to the configuration EEPROM of the driver board. This is used to handle multiple configurations of the driver boards beyond the functionality of simple colour look-up tables. To store the EEPROM contents on disk, click on the Write to Disk button. You will be then prompted to type in a filename for the Hex file. Reading out the data from the board takes several minutes. The overall size is 64 kbytes. 14 For re-programming two types of files as input are accepted: *.HEX as Intel Hex format and *.ANF (All NVRAM File) format. The ANF format is an ASCII file. It has lines, each with one single byte in hexadecimal representation. Click on the Read from Disk button to select an EEPROM file for reading in, and then Load to read the file into buffer. In the dialog's status line the filename and file size (must be Bytes here) will appear. At last click on Program Device to program the device. After programming a verification of the memory contents is performed automatically. Note: Only particular areas of the EEPROM are overwritten. Reprogramming is limited to colour look-up tables and sequence generation data. The program reports each memory section during programming. LCD Clock and Sequencer Time Base The LCD Clock and Sequencer Time Base can be viewed and edited using the LCD Clock tab. Note: Do not edit any of the fields without detailed knowledge of the internal operation of the driver ASIC! The LCD Clock Tab shows an interactive representation of a piece of circuitry inside the ASIC that is responsible for the speed on the LCD data bus and the bitplane driving scheme. This dialog is useful when designing new bitplane configurations. The description of the procedure is beyond the scope of this help file Factory defaults The SLM hardware driver board has a non-volatile reprogrammable configuration memory for the storage of user defined adjustments. If you want to reset the configuration to the delivery state use the Set Factory Defaults item from the Options menu.
