INTRODUCTION Congratulations on joining the extensive list of satisfied Current Technology customers. Since our inception in 1971, thousands of our electrical transient suppression filter systems have been installed to protect critical loads in a wide variety of industries. The success of Current Technology products is the culmination of more than a quarter century of focused lab and field research resulting in a unique and exclusive approach to power quality. Our TransGuard and Select suppression filter systems with MasterMIND Diagnostic Monitoring System provide all modes of bi-directional surge suppression and electrical line noise filtering with a revolutionary engineering design called seamless technology. Current Technology s MasterMIND diagnostic monitoring system is an option on the TransGuard models and the selenium-enhanced Select models. In addition to providing the most reliable suppression and filtering, a MasterMIND equipped product reports valuable data related to the electrical environment. This feature-rich, intelligent system permits real-time monitoring of every suppression element and displays: protection capacity, number of voltage swells, sags, surges, dropouts and outages. MasterMIND features include: Phase indicator lights Digital LED display Form C dry contacts Audio alarm/disable switch Reset and test switches Phase and filter LED status indicators Alarm disable indicator Real-time percentage protection status N-G voltage & N-G current Percentage protection warning RMS voltage Selenium fuse & capacitor fuse status Disturbance counters Battery back-up of stored data Select and TransGuard suppression filter systems with the MasterMIND Diagnostic Monitoring System utilize the performance capabilities of three major components polypropylene capacitors, nonlinear voltage dependent metal oxide varistors (MOVs) and synergistic component geometry. This combination delivers seamless power without the damaging effects of electrical surges and high frequency noise. Left unchecked, these power anomalies can result in diminished performance, catastrophic damage or lock-up of sensitive modern electronic devices. To further enhance superior performance, Current Technology products are manufactured in accordance with established world-class quality standards in our Richmond, Virginia corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility. 4 To maximize performance from your Current Technology suppression filter system, strategic location is as important as correct wiring methods. Proper physical location will enable your unit to provide the industry s most reliable transient and noise protection. Install your Current Technology suppression filter system in a location that minimizes wire lengths and wire bends. This positioning maximizes both surge suppression and filtering, while providing added protection for the protected loads. Today s sophisticated electronic equipment requires superior suppression filter systems. By selecting Current Technology products, you take a critical step toward decreasing downtime and ensuring longer product life for your equipment. We look forward to fulfilling your suppression filter and power quality system needs. Current Technology s SPD units with MasterMIND must be installed in parallel to the facility s electrical distribution system. The MasterMIND option is available both as an integral option (within the cabinet of the new SPD unit) and as a remote option. For remote units, please see the enclosed single sheet addendum with specific enclosure sizes, mounting details and wiring diagrams. Before energizing however, please verify voltages, wire sizes, torque requirements, etc. W A R N I N G! 1. Voltage Verification: Prior to product installation, verify that the voltage rating of the intended electrical distribution system matches the voltage rating of the unit to be installed. WARNING: SERIOUS INJURY OR DAMAGE MAY RESULT FROM INSTALLING A PRODUCT WITH AN IMPROPER VOLTAGE RATING. CONTACT FACTORY IF VOLTAGE RATINGS ARE NOT IDENTICAL. FOR WYE-CONNECTED SYSTEMS, CHECK NEUTRAL-GROUND BOND AT TRANSFORMER PROVIDING POWER TO PROTECTED LOADS. WARRANTY VOID IF PRODUCT IS CONNECTED TO INCORRECT VOLTAGE CONFIGURATION OR IF NEUTRAL-GROUND BOND IS NOT PRESENT IN WYE-CONFIGURED SYSTEMS. CAUTION: HIGH LEG DELTA-CONFIGURED PRODUCTS MUST BE SUPPLIED FOR HIGH LEG DELTA VOLTAGE CONFIGURATIONS (B LEG MUST BE THE HIGH LEG FOR THESE CONFIGURATIONS). WARRANTY VOID IF THIS IS NOT THE CASE. 2. Form C Dry contacts: The MasterMIND features includes from C remote dry contacts as part of the standard package. Again, these form C remote monitor dry contacts allow users to connect the suppression devices to optional remote indicators or 4 Current Technology MasterMIND Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual
other facility monitoring panels. To wire dry contacts, locate the two blue terminal blocks on the cabinet door interior. Each set of contacts may be wired independently. For normally open operation under energized conditions, connect the normally open terminal and common terminal to the monitoring input. For normally closed operation during energized conditions, connect the normally closed terminal and common terminal to the monitoring input. Upon loss of power to any or all phases, contacts will change to alarm state. 3. Battery Back-up: All units equipped with the MasterMIND (including Remote units) employ a battery-equipped system to power the audible and visual alarm devices and retain power for system memory. NOTE: The battery fits very tightly into the socket. Please ensure that the battery clicks into place thus, making a tight connection. When the SPD unit is ENERGIZED, the MasterMIND resets automatically and the initialization sequence occurs. The initialization sequence indicates that the alarm and visual devices function properly. MasterMIND communicates with the user via a touchpad accessible data display with multiport, visual status LED indicators. The MasterMIND Diagnostic Monitoring System functions visually and audibly and interfaces with you through the following features: Initialization and Operation 1. Initialization Sequence: The MasterMIND Diagnostic Monitoring System engages in a self-diagnostic initialization sequence when the SPD unit is energized. When energized, the Digital LED Display indicates 60H then the Digital LED displays a numerical sequence of 111, 222 and 333. Simultaneously, all multi-colored DISPLAY LEDs illuminate green, red, then amber in color, the STATUS LEDs illuminate in green and the FAULT LEDs illuminate in red. Finally, the Digital LED displays the word HELLO then, the initial settings take place. For the initial setting: 1) a green LED illuminates next to the VOLTS-RMS (A phase) and reveals the detected numerical value in the Digital LED display, 2) the green STATUS LEDs illuminate to reveal those components in each phase that are operational and 3) the red FAULT LEDs illuminate any undesirable conditions. NOTE: if any green STATUS LEDs are not illuminated or any FAULT LEDs are illuminated, take the appropriate action. 2. Display Functions: Multi-colored LEDs & Digital LED Display The multi-colored LEDs located to the left of the black DISPLAY block of the MasterMIND overlay, illuminate in green, red or amber colors. The green LED indicates which selected power quality feature is being monitored and shown on the Digital LED display. And red LED(s) indicate that MasterMIND detected a power quality anomaly for any Current Technology MasterMIND Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual 5
feature(s). To review a particular feature, simply depress the appropriate touch-pad button. The green or amber illuminated LED indicates the feature (e.g. SWELLS) that is selected for review at the Digital LED display. The LED changes from the red to amber to only when reviewing a selected power quality feature that experienced a power anomaly. See Power Quality Monitoring in Section 4. The Digital LED displays a 3-digit numeric value (e.g. number of swells recorded) for events, percentages or voltage/current readings. If this numerical value reflects a number of events, the number displayed is a cumulative total effective from the initial installation of the SPD unit. A percentage value or a voltage/current reading is a real-time value being detected recorded and displayed concurrently. To clear the cumulative total for the events, depress and hold (for 3 seconds) the RESET button on the touchpad. This clears the memory and allows the user to mange the system parameter according to any desired maintenance schedule. See Test & Reset Switches in Section Phase Protection Monitoring Again, Select and TransGuard units provide SPD protection with MOV-based technology and noise filtering capacitors. Select units provide additional protection and filtering with the addition of selenium plates. One or more of following features indicates loss of protection: Loss of illumination of the green STATUS Indicator LEDs Illumination of red FAULT Indicator LEDs Sound of the Audible Alarm reveals that any abnormal condition exists NOTE: Silence the Audible Alarm by pressing the ALARM DISABLED button located in the DISPLAY block. Should one or more of these indicators be present, survey the unit by depressing the % PROTECTION button for the appropriate phase(s). All units should be operating at 100% protection upon installation. If less than 100% is detected, contact Current Technology. The % PROTECTION feature detects the functionality of the circuits (fuses) feeding the MOVs. A unit with more than 50% of MOVs operative is functioning within specification and does not require replacement. Units with % PROTECTION levels less than 50% require replacement. 4. Power Quality Monitoring The power quality monitoring features of the MasterMIND Diagnostic Monitoring System provide an unparalleled ability to monitor power conditions such as true RMS voltage, Neutral-to- Ground Current and Voltage Sensing, Voltage Sags, Swells and Surges plus, Power Dropouts and Outages. 6 Current Technology MasterMIND Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual
To access these functions, simply depress the appropriate button on the MasterMIND overlay keypad while the unit is functioning for realtime monitoring or a cumulative total of anomalies experienced within the distribution system. 5. TEST & RESET Switches The TEST switch is used to perform a self-diagnostic test of the MasterMIND Diagnostic Monitoring System. However, the RESET switch (when held for 3 seconds) clears all data stored from either the initialization of the unit within the system or the last time the RESET switch was depressed. Shown here is the MasterMIND overlay keypad. Interface with the MasterMIND unit through this keypad. Please refer to the following chapter entitled FEATURES & USES for additional details of the MasterMIND Diagnostic Monitoring System. Features and Uses Multi-colored LEDs & Digital LED Display Reports all measurable data detected and recorded by the various system features including start-up, model number and software version. (Also see Display Event Counter on page 6). USE: Visual display of the function being monitored, (e.g. RMS VOLT- AGE). Press the VOLTS RMS button, the LED changes from red to green and the actual RMS Voltage is displayed on the Digital Display. % Protection Available Sensing Senses and displays the available surge protection online for each phase (Phase-to-Neutral) as well as N-G. The microprocessor-based circuitry senses each hybrid element fuse, calculates the amount of active protection still in the circuit and displays this value as a percentage of total protection. USE: To ensure that critical loads are fully and safely protected with a failure free device, MasterMIND provides real time analysis on the percent of protection online. To effectively maintain the distribution system, MasterMIND reveals true status of protection unlike passive monitoring systems that provide only post event data. True RMS Voltage Monitor Monitors the true Root Mean Squared (RMS) voltage for all phases (Phase-to-Neutral for WYE Systems) along with neutral-to-ground. Specifically, MasterMIND provides RMS voltage readings for each L-N with an accuracy of 2% for the nominal line voltages. USE: Alerts users to critical neutral-ground bonding issues within the distribution system. Improper grounding is one of the most crucial and overlooked factors in power quality and conditioning. This unique, extremely valuable feature evaluates the effectiveness of the distribution system s grounding capability. Current Technology MasterMIND Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual 7
Neutral-to-Ground Current Sensing Detects continuous overcurrent conditions in the neutral-to-ground mode for WYE systems and digitally displays the measured current magnitude. Specifically, MasterMIND provides RMS voltage (<20Vrms, OL>20Vrms) and RMS current (<20Vrms, OL>20Vrms) readings for N-G. USE: Provides an additional check to the integrity of the neutralto-ground mode. Should the failure of an MOV, or an improperly installed wire produce a higher than normal current condition, MasterMIND immediately notifies users with a fault indication light. Reset Switch Switching device that clears all stored, cumulative data and initializes the diagnostic functions of the monitoring circuit. USE: MasterMIND accumulates and manages system performance data in time intervals according to individual maintenance schedule and parameters. By resetting the MasterMIND monitoring system, all stored data is cleared and new information is recorded for use as determined by user preference. Test Switch Switch that initializes the LEDs and sounds the audible alarm to ensure that in the event of failure, the appropriate alarms provide notification. USE: As the name entails, this switch tests the functionality (selfdiagnostics) of the components in the MasterMIND monitoring system. Upon depressing the TEST button, the display LEDs will turn AMBER in color and the audible alarm will be heard. Note: the amber color of the LEDs indicates that both the red and green elements are functioning. Voltage Sag Detection Counts and displays voltage sags, for all phases combined, greater than 5 cycles in duration in the voltage range of 10% to 90% of nominal. Voltage Swell Detection Counts and displays voltage swells, for all phases combined, greater than 5 cycles in duration in the voltage range of 110% to 200% of nominal. Voltage Surge Detection Counts and displays voltage surges, for all phases combined, greater than 130% of peak voltage or greater than 20 microseconds in duration. Power Dropout Detection Counts and displays fractional cycle dropouts, for all phases combined, equal to or greater than 1 /4 cycle in duration. 8 Current Technology MasterMIND Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual
Power Outage Detection Counts and displays power outages, for all phases combined, greater than 1 cycle in duration. USE: These detection features display valuable information regarding the general quality of the power being fed into the facility. These features count, record and display unfavorable power anomalies thus, provide pertinent information to evaluate the service from the utility company or other sources. Note: all cumulative values are cleared (set to 000) when the RESET key is depressed. Display Event Counter Measures and displays cumulative number of transients detected on all ten modes of the SPD device. This advanced current sensing detection circuitry eliminates erroneous counts produced from stray voltages and noise signals-both conducted and radiated. USE: This utilizes the Digital LED Display to measure and confirm the value of SPD protection and allow operators to evaluate the frequency of power disturbances experienced within the facility. In addition, with multiple applications of MasterMIND devices, the operator can troubleshoot the distribution system to locate sources of internally generated transients. Enhanced Status Indicators Provides real-time, visual indication, of each phase for all hybrid elements: selenium, MOVs, and capacitors. Note: TransGuard units have status lights for MOVs and capacitors in each phase while Select units have additional lights for the selenium cells. USE: Enables operators to easily and quickly review the operational status of the hybrid elements contained in each phase. When the LEDs are illuminated in green, this indicates that all components are functioning within specification. When LEDs are not illuminated, a failure has occurred in that phase. Dual Form C Dry Contacts Equipped with 2 sets of form C dry contacts (normally open and normally closed), MasterMIND facilitates connection to a building management system or other remote monitoring system (e.g. the Current Technology Remote Alarm Panel). The contacts shall be normally open or normally closed and shall change state upon failure of the suppression system or power loss in any of the phases. USE: Allows users to link the SPD protection devices to the overall building control system in a comprehensive building-monitoring package. Current Technology MasterMIND Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual 9
Battery Powered Audible Alarm & Fault Alarm Notifies users of single or multiple phase failure of the suppression filter system. A standard, field replaceable 9V alkaline battery powers the MasterMIND audible alarm to sound in the event of a total power failure. Current Technology, equips the alarm with a test switch, to ensure positive function. Within the FAULT block on the overlay, a red LED illuminates to indicate ALARM DIS- ABLED and a separate red LED illuminates to indicate LOW BATTERY when battery requires replacement. In the event of simultaneous power outage in all phases, the battery also powers the monitoring circuit to save all the recorded data. USE: Informs operators of catastrophic failures. This is independent of all other monitoring systems and works regardless of AC power availability. ALARM DISABLED with a red light states that an operator manually disabled the alarm otherwise, the light is not illuminated. 10 Current Technology MasterMIND Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual
Troubleshooting and Maintenance The Current Technology Select and TransGuard suppression filter systems do not require periodic maintenance since the units are equipped with the new Failure-free Intergrated Suppression Buss (ISB). These units have been tested by independent, third party laboratories and are designed not to fail under transient conditions. Typical causes of SPD products NOT CAUSED by transients include: Sustained Overvoltages and Overcurrents Excess Temperatures Improper Application & Installation Improper Neutral-to-Ground Bond For any issues related to the performance of the SPD units (excluding the MasterMIND ) please consult the applicable Installation, Operations and Maintenance Manual. Pleas check these conditions regarding the MasterMIND Diagnostic Monitoring System units: Battery and Connection Cable Connections and Cable Integrity A/C Power to the SPD unit However, should the MasterMIND units still not function properly, detach all wire connections (including those at the Form C Dry contacts) and the entire board (Part Number ) then, request a Return Material Authorization (RMA).
