1 High-Resolution Extension Cat5 Remote Unit, SERVIS TM Extender Cat5 WideBand SERVIS Extender series is intended to extend the accessible distance to the console for servers and/or PCs. It is highly regarded and introduced in a wide variety of application fields for its high-resolution display, high-quality image viewing, consistently stable operation, simple and easy installation, and other advantages based on FUJITSU s original technical innovations. * KVM stands for Keyboard, Video monitor, and Mouse, which make up the console. Introduction SERVIS series, for which FUJITSU is expanding the product line, provides a solution for the control of personal computers (PCs)/server equipment with a keyboard, mouse, and video monitor (collectively called aconsole). As information-oriented systems become more sophisticated, an increasing number of PCs and servers have been introduced. They require more efficient operation, spacesaving utilization, and other enhanced convenience features for control. Consistent availability of stable operation in an urgent situation and assurance of security also constitute essential requirements. An increasing number of supervisory control systems, display units, and other industrial-use equipment also require similar control in response to the penetration of information technology and new applications as well. In order to keep up with market needs, FUJITSU has been offering 4-/8-/16-port intelligent KVM switches, console drawers, Cat5 remote units, and other equipment for installation in a 19-inch rack for the SERVIS series. These products are highly regarded by many customers for their enhanced reliability, more stabilized switching, easier installation, and other advantages; in fact, they maintain a dominant market share (Photo 1). This article focuses on the Extender Cat5 WideBand, a console extension solution (Photos 2 and 3). Photo 1 SERVIS Series 1

2 KVM Switch Any accident associated with a KVM switch can have a significant effect on the system involved, even the shutdown of the connected server, potentially causing a massive loss. FUJITSU is knowledgeable of the constituent technologies required for the keyboard/mouse interface as a result of our long-standing involvement in the keyboard/mouse business. Particularly with regard to the Sun interface, we have no rivals. The SERVIS KVM switch features extraordinarily stable operation utilizing the Sun interface. It can operate even on the BIOS level regardless of the OS in use due to the hardware-based control. The SERVIS KVM switch provides the most suitable solution for control and operation in an environment in which PCs, IA servers, Linux servers, Sun servers, and multiple other types of machines are used in combination. The product has been adopted by a number of server makers in Japan and has earned a good reputation for reliability. Required Performance of the Remote Unit This product provides a solution to allow the extension of servers, PCs, and other consoles to different floors or rooms, thereby enhancing the flexibility of control methods. It is backed by our technical know-how on the control of consoles that we have accumulated during the development of the KVM switch. One of the primary requirements for the performance of the remote unit is that it is controllable at the greatest possible distance. It must also fulfill the following additional requirements: (1) stable transmission, (2) high-resolution transmission, and (3) high-definition image transmission. These transmission performance characteristics are likely to involve a tradeoff with available extension distance, though our SERVIS Extender successfully implements both requirements, a considerable increase in the extension distance and enhancement of transmission performances, concurrently. Fig.1 presents the market trend and FUJITSU development roadmap. Product Features Stable transmission performance The extension of consoles can be achieved regardless of the platforms used due to our firmware technologies that we have accumulated in the development of the KVM switch. In addition, the adoption of our proprietary noise-cancellation circuit minimizes the effects of the plasma noise of semiconductor manufacturing systems and the starting noise of large-size motors, which can cause unstable transmission. High-resolution transmission Our original remote-control technology has achieved console extension to 300m for SXGA (1,2801,024 dots) and 200m for UXGA (1,6001,200 dots). In addition, even for QXGA (2,0481,536 dots), which is expected to be used as the future resolution, an extension to 100m has been successfully implemented. High-quality image transmission The receiver unit incorporates a circuit to allow independent adjustment offocusandbrightness. Thus, their adjustment controls help achieve optimum image quality. 3 circuit. SERVIS Extender is designed to assign the three primary colors, (1) Red, (2) Green, and (3) Blue as well as (4) mouse/ keyboard transmission, to the four pairs of Cat5 cable conductors. A Cat5 cable consists of conductors that are twisted around each other on each pair (Twisted-Pair). As such, individual pairs of conductors may not always be equal in length depending on the degree of twisting. In actuality, for example, a cable of nominal length (200m) offers a difference of 0.5m. This difference is known as skew. When the cable is used in the transmission of the three primary colors, the difference is identifiable in the time of arrival. Also, the individual colors of R, G, and B would be displayed as shifting horizontally on a remote screen. This shift in color can cause not only poor color tone representation but also the blurring of the lines of vertical letters, which could normally be represented by a single colorthus leading to illegible letters. The SERVIS Extender is designed to correct any skew and smooth out the arrival time of the three primary colors of RGB, thereby reproducing the colors as transmitted and providing well-defined, blur-free displays even for smaller letters. Fig.2 presents the available corrections by individual functions. Easy connectivity Cable running and installation is easy and simple since Cat5 UTP cables are standard in LAN application. The cables are intended for the transmission of high-frequency analog signals based on proprietary protocol and thus, they cannot be commonly used with for the present LAN cable. Use of our cables is recommended since the image quality is more susceptible to the influence of cable high-frequency characteristics and skew characteristics as the extension distance becomes longer. Available transmission of touch panel and audio FE-2000CW (advanced model) can achieve audio (stereo) extension with sound quality comparable to CD and RS- 232C. 4 transmission of touch panel information after the initial setting. For extension of the two items, the installation of additional Cat5 cable is required in addition to that for the console. Specifications Table 1 presents the specifications of the SERVIS Extender series. Convenient installation For FE-1000CW (compact model), dedicated mounting brackets are available optionally. L-type mounting bracket: Intended for fixing on the side of a desk with the magnet provided. VESA mounting bracket: Intended for fixing on the back of a monitor using the tapped hole in conformity with the VESA standard. Fig.3 shows the mounting brackets. Figure 3 Mounting Bracket Typical Applications This product is finding wide application in various systems such as digital broadcasting, semiconductor manufacturing, and communication carrier monitoring. 5 Future Development FUJITSU will continue expanding its product lineup to offer enhanced convenience by adding automated adjustment, etc. while maintaining the high level of remote unit basic performance. In addition, FUJITSU is also working toward the expansion of remote solutions including an optical-fiberbased SERVIS ExtenderFE-4000OPand Ethernet-based IP-KVM switch and a serial console switch.
