1 SERVIS TM IP-KVM Capable of Operating Computers via Network IP-KVM is a device that allows IP conversion of an operation console, enabling operation over a network with theoretically no distance restriction. A familiar operation environment is realized by a remote environment with an image of the local operation environment reproduced on a Web browser. Overview FUJITSU has commercialized the SERVIS Series composed of intelligent KVM *1 switches, console drawers, and so on as useful solutions for the efficient control and management of servers, for which demand has been continuously increasing. These products have been introduced in a wide range of systems and have been well received by many customers due to their excellent reliability, switching stability, installation workability, etc. Furthermore, the demand for remote computer operation has been growing in relation to security expansion. To address this, FUJITSU provided the SERVIS Extender Cat5 WideBand Series that provides 300m extension with high definition (SXGA) and high image quality using the Cat5 cable. It received very positive feedback from customers in a wide range of fields, including the work sites and display systems of manufacturing industries and the IT industry. The SERVIS IP-KVM/ we have now developed is a new solution to extend the operation environment beyond the boundaries of physical distance. This product uses a network as an extension path for an operation console composed of a keyboard, a mouse, and a video display. By connecting this product to a computer that requires remote control, it is possible for all network users to access and operate it. The computer is selected by specifying the IP address to which this product is connected; there is no access restriction by path. This product contributes to the dramatic reduction of TCO enabling the maintenance, control, and management of systems installed at remote locations. This product is also equipped with security functions including access authentication by password, encrypted communication Photo 1 External View 1

2 by SSL, and a simple firewall function that restricts the IP addresses that can access, thereby realizing both safety and convenience. Fig.1 presents some application examples. The use of this product allows the following: Operation of a server located in a data center remote from the user office Operation of a PC installed at an unmanned site Management of a production system located beyond the building, etc. Product Features Fig.2 presents the basic connection diagram, and Fig.3 presents the connector connection diagram. Remote operation using the network as the extension path Keyboard, mouse, and video display consoles are operated from a remote location via a network. Operation is executed by composing a remote console on the computer connected to the network. This device unifies all servers to the same operation environment, thereby eliminating the need to utilize various remote software programs depending on server type. Advantages of hardware Unlike those with software products such as remote desktop, keyboard and mouse operations are smooth. It is capable of remote access on the BIOS level, which is impossible for software products-this enables server management at the essential level. Remote console Operation by JAVA applet on the Web browser By specifying the IP address of this product from the Web browser of a remotely operated computer that is connected to the network, it automatically downloads the JAVA applet incorporated in this product and starts operating. No OS or browser restriction This product can be used on any of the major OSs (Windows, Linux, Macintosh, Solaris TM, and so on) or Web browsers (IE, Opera, mozilla, Safari TM, and so on). No special client software program is needed. Clear operation on Japanese operation screen This is the industry s only solution that offers a fully Japanese operation screen thereby enabling clear operation. Figure 1 Application Examples 2

3 Supports Japanese keyboards It fully supports Japanese keyboards as well as English and German ones. Network Operable even within a small bandwidth Operation is sufficiently possible with 64kbps as the throughput between IP-KVM and remote console. If 400kbps can be achieved, a comfortable operation environment can be realized. In addition, this product is equipped with functions to restrict the usable bandwidth, thus enabling the effective utilization of customer network assets. Security Fig.4 presents the security details. Communication via SSL encryption (128-bit SSL) path Communication between this product and the remote console via SSL encryption path prevents leakage from external points. Connection control by access authentication method Authentication is controlled by user name and password when logging into this product. 4 Access restriction by simple firewall function Access is restricted except for previously registered IP addresses unregistered IP addresses are blocked. Virtual disk function Fig.5 shows the virtual disk function. The remote console and host computer provide a virtual disk that can be used for sharing data. By connecting this product and the host computer with USB, a virtual disk is created that can be shared from the remote console functions. Virtual floppy disk and virtual RAM disk An area recognized as a 1.44Mbytes floppy disk or 8Mbytes RAM disk by the host computer is created in the internal memory of this product. This enables data exchanges between the remote console and the host. Virtual CD-ROM An image file server (http) is located on the network to which this product is connected. It enables the host computer to recognize the ISO image file stored in it as a virtual CD-ROM. This allows control of application version updates and reinstallation of OS from the remote console. Specifications Table 1 provides the specifications of this product. Future Development Figure 5 Virtual Disk Functions In recent years, wide-range networks that are not restricted to the same building or premise are being constructed by plants and branch offices. Under such circumstances, the dispersed servers and various network devices must be efficiently operated and managed with limited human resources. In concurrence with such changes in network environments, there exists a demand for a product that can control and manage multiple servers and peripheral devices on a network. To address this need, FUJITSU is developing and commercializing new products to provide remote operation solutions with a multiuser KVM switch and serial console server following this IP-KVM. 4
