1 . General. This procedure describes Pretium EDGE Tap Modules, which are available for both multimode and single mode applications. Compatible with all Pretium EDGE rack-mountable connector housings, TP modules have twelve front-mounted shuttered LC adapters and two connectors in back (Figure ). STNDRD RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE 00- ISSUE OCTOER 0 PGE OF Pretium EDGE Tap Module Installation and Testing SRP 00-, Issue related literature SRP-00-, Pretium EDGE Solution SRP-00-, Multifiber Connector and Port Cleaning with the TKT-CLEN-MFC-M kit table of contents. General.... Precautions.... Tools and Materials.... Connector and dapter Cleaning.... Calculating System Loss.udgets.... The Functionality of the Tap Module Splitters.... Installing Pretium EDGE Tap Modules.... Referencing the Test Equipment for a Tap Module.... Testing Pretium EDGETap Modules.... The module contains fiber optic splitters which divide the incoming optical signals into two outputs, one for live link traffic and one for monitoring. The monitor traffic is routed via the TP -labeled connector to a monitoring device which filters the data and sends it to various software tools for analysis, where it is then viewed in application-layer software for security threats, performance issues, or system optimization. IMPORTNT: Please note that Tap module systems have two outputs for each input, which may require two power meters, and depending on the system configuration, possibly require an additional craftsperson in another location.. If this procedure is reissued, a summary of the changes will appear in this paragraph. HP-0 MDE IN MEXICO US PTENT NO. 2 . Precautions. Laser Precautions \WRNING: DO NOT use magnifiers in the presence of laser light - diffused laser light can cause eye damage of focused with optical instruments. Never look directly into the end of a connector that may be carrying laser light. Should accidental eye exposure to laser light be suspected, arrange for an eye examination immediately. Cable Handling Precautions NOTE: Fiber optic cable is sensitive to excessive pulling, bending, and crushing forces. Do not bend cables more sharply than their minimum recommended bend radius. Do not apply more pulling force to the cable assembly than specified. Do not crush the cable or allow it to kink. Doing so may cause damage that can alter the transmission characteristics of the cable; the cable may have to be replaced.. Tools and Materials. The following tools and materials are required for this procedure: Two () power meters with LC port adapters Two () LC-LC jumpers One () SC-LC jumper for the light source One () LC-LC adapter Light source One to LC harness LC port cleaner (p/n CLENER-PORT-LC) Connector and Port Cleaning Tool (p/n 0-0) For multimode applications: Mandrel wrap suitable for your cable type (available in p/n OTS-COMOMN). Connector and dapter Cleaning. Cleaning the LC adapters with an LC port cleaner before each mating is recommended (Figure ). HP-0 Figure. The use of an Connector and Port Cleaning Tool to clean connectors and ports before each mating is recommended (Figure ). HP-0 Figure STNDRD RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE 00- ISSUE OCTOER 0 PGE OF
3 . Calculating System Loss udgets. This section describes how to calculate the loss budgets of a system using a Pretium EDGE Tap Module. Note that you will need to calculate one loss budget for the LIVE system (Figure ) and two different loss budgets for the Tap output (Figure and ). Table indicates the system loss values of the system components: Multimode Fiber Single Mode Fiber OM Ultra-bendable optimized 0µm end-improved single Mode (0 nm) (0 nm) Component Loss, max (d) Loss, max (d) mated loss loss Splitter 0/0 (d).. 5 . The Functionality of the Tap Module Splitters Directionality. In simplest terms, the splitters inside a Tap module act like a divider of a one-way traffic flow in this case, light. The even-numbered LC connectors in a Tap module serve only for source input and their traffic is split between the LIVE and TP outputs (Figure, top). Input into LC # 0 Tap Output on Fiber WRRNTY TP LIVE LIVE output TP Output In the same fashion, the Tap module s oddnumbered LC connectors receive live traffic from the LIVE input port. The input traffic from the LIVE input port is split between the LIVE LC odd fibers and the TP port (Figure, bottom). Tables and in Section provide a full representation of the source and output positions Live output from LC # HP-0 0 Tap Output on Fiber WRRNTY TP LIVE LIVE source TP Output Figure. Tap modules therefore must be tested with directionality in mind. The source must be always connected to the input of the splitter and the meter must be connected to the output of the splitter. Connecting a source to the output of a splitter will result in high attenuation. Wavelength Considerations. The splitters on multimode modules are optimized for 0 nm VCSEL (Vertical-cavity Surface-emitting Lasers), thus when testing multimode systems, use only the 0 nm wavelength.. Single mode systems may be tested at both 0 and 0 nm. STNDRD RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE 00- ISSUE OCTOER 0 PGE OF
6 . Installing a Pretium EDGE Tap Module. Pretium EDGE Tap modules are installed just like their normal Pretium EDGE module counterparts. Refer to the Installation chapter in SRP-00-, Pretium EDGE Solution, for complete instructions. This procedure covers module installation, trouble shooting, and other module-related topics as well.. Install the Tap module and its Tap harness into your system housing (this procedure illustrates an to LC harness).. Referencing the Test Equipment for a Tap Module. Start by powering on the source and meter and allowing a minimum of minutes for them to warm up and stabilize. For multimode systems: set the unit to the 0 nm wavelength. For single mode systems: Set the unit to auto-switch between 0 and 0 nm wavelengths.. To reference the source and two meters: Step : Clean and insert the SC-end of the SC to LC jumper (Reference Jumper no., or RJ) into the output of the light source. Step : Clean and insert the LC end of RJ jumper into the LC port adapter of Meter no. (M) (Figure ). For multimode only: Wrap the jumper times and secure it in a mm mandrel with tape (standard 0 µm multimode procedure). Step : Step : Verify that RJ is acceptable at your system s wavelength(s) and reference this power to 0.00 d. Disconnect and move the meter-end LC of RJ to Meter no. (M) and repeat step. Disconnect M after this step. HP-0 mm mandrel wrap for multimode only Light Source (Tx) Reference Jumper no. RJ 0.00 Meter no. (RX) M Meter no. Light Source HP-00 M d M Figure 0 Step : Leave the LC adapter on the end of RJ for the remainder of this procedure since it will be required for mating to the TP port test harness.. Referencing is now complete. Move the Light Source and RJ to the front of the Tap module; move M, RJ, and the LC adapter to the end of the Tap harness; and move M and RJ to the Pretium EDGE modules at the far end of the system (See Figure ). IMPORTNT: From this step on, do NOT the connectors on either the Light Source or meter port adapters. STNDRD RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE 00- ISSUE OCTOER 0 PGE OF
