7 ergonomics & accessories Ergonomic Considerations Ergonomics & Workstation Design Ergonomics is defined as the merging of man and machine. In workstation design, ergonomics is the science of fitting the physical aspects of the work environment to the anatomy of the human body. It s more than creating workspaces based on convenience. A simple understanding of ergonomics and workstation design can save companies money, and reduce employees pain and health issues. This knowledge can reduce the risk of injuries, thereby improving employee morale and productivity. Injuries are the result of force, posture and repetition. If these factors are not neutralized, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) can occur. They typically result when an employee is required to perform a task in a physical environment not suited for their physical abilities. MSDs are injuries and disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage and spinal discs. Symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders include numbness, burning, pain, tingling, cramping and stiffness. Examples of musculoskeletal disorders are: carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sciatica, herniated discs and low back pain. Effects of these conditions have significant impact on worker productivity and, ultimately, financial losses to organizations. Different Types of Office Workers There are generally three different types of office workers, determined by the amount of time sat at a computer performing their task each day. Intensive users typically spend over four hours a day in front of a computer, intermittent users spend between two and four hours, and occasional users less than two hours. The chart below identifies each user and outlines the necessary ergonomic workstation needs. A well-designed and set-up workstation will have accessories properly positioned in relation to the seated user in each of these zones. Primary Zone Within Immediate Reach Everything is within the seated user s reach when elbows are at their side. Items in this zone are used constantly throughout the work day, such as keyboard and mouse, to prevent injury. Secondary Zone Within Arm s Reach Everything is within a 180 sweep of both arms when out-stretched. Items in this zone are used frequently throughout the day, such as monitor, document stand, planner, telephone and lighting. Reference Zone Beyond Anything beyond arm s reach. The following outlines the keyboard solutions recommended for each application. Alternate solutions are available dependent on the application. Intensive User (>4 hours of computer use) T1 Aluminum or T2 HDPE with A Sit/Stand or B Extended Arm: T1 and T2 include a 3D adjustable mouse surface that easily reconfigures to left and right hand users. Arm options A and B provide a large range of user height adjustment with feedback gauge. A Tiers Thin Edge antimicrobial palmrest promotes healthy postures and a healthy workspace. Dual Arm Keyboard Support (YKKW): Dual arm keyboard solution with full width tray. Provides a solid platform for intensive keyboard and mouse use with +6/-7" of height adjustment and +/-15 tilt. Can be added to any rectangular surface offered in a fixed position and retractable version. Intermittent User (2 to 4 hours of computer use) T3 Small Phenolic or T4 Large Phenolic with B Extended or C Standard Arm: T3 and T4 slim profile trays provide durable keyboard solutions with adjustability. 14 Tiers Special Applications Guide Shift Tiers Shift is available on T1 Aluminum. Shift allows the user to slide the keyboard platform to the left or right to refocus the keyboard solution to their task. For example, a right hand orientation that is mouse intensive could shift the tray left and position the mouse surface over numeric resulting in a more convenient and comfortable posture for the user. Note how the tray position changes relative to the arm. Removable Thin Edge Palmrest Tiers thin edge antimicrobial palmrest is easily removed without the use of tools. Replacement and individual palmrests are available (ACGTT). Quick Install Feature Tiers T1 Aluminum features a pin & knob system that does not require any tools for installation. Arms A, B, and C all come with threaded tray heads for quick and easy installation of any Tiers keyboard platform. Dual Stage Telescoping Track Arm option Extended Telescoping (E) features a sequenced dual stage track that provides 15" of arm mechanism retractability.
