4 C O M P L E T E P O W E R Q U A L I T Y F R O M M E M MEM POWER QUALITY MEM Power Quality gives us a comprehensive range of Power Quality products to suit the need of every customer. The Power Quality Range incorporates: THE I.T. PROTECTOR FROM MEM The I.T. Protector range of Transient Voltage Surge Suppression (TVSS) devices, from MEM, protect against the harmful effects of transient voltage surges caused by lightning, electricity supply network problems and the switching of the very load equipment your business depends upon. TVSS can prevent disruption, degradation, damage and downtime of all electrical and sensitive electronic equipment caused by such power problems. AHC FROM MEM Active Harmonic Conditioning (AHC) from MEM provides the flexible approach to reducing harmonic distortion. The increasing use of computers, variable speed drives, UPS systems and switched mode power supplies causes excessive heating in transformers, switchgear and cables, and damages sensitive electronic equipment. The AHC unit solves these problems and is totally flexible to the changing needs of the modern day system. JOHNSON AND PHILLIPS CAPACITORS FROM MEM Johnson & Phillips capacitors, from MEM, are supplied primarily to reduce electricity costs. They do, however, have the added benefits of providing load reduction and improving voltage regulation. In addition, these capacitors, when used in conjunction with a series reactor, can provide harmonic cleansing of the supply network. 2

6 T R A N S I E N T V O L T A G E S U R G E S U P P R E S S I O N - W H Y D O Y O U N E E D I T? As businesses worldwide become ever more complex, the investment in sophisticated and sensitive electronic equipment, ultra high-speed processors, data communication systems and automation equipment becomes essential to increase productivity and remain competitive in today s global marketplace. To protect these investments, transient voltage surge suppression has taken centre-stage as an invaluable asset, helping to keep systems up and running, whilst reducing downtime, maintenance and repair costs. TRANSIENT SOURCES Transients are brief over voltages or over currents, typically lasting just microseconds, caused by external and internal events. Lightning, power company grid switching, load switching by neighbouring factories, and variable speed drives are a few of the causes of such power disturbances. Transient voltages range from just a few volts to over 20,000 volts, with surge currents in excess of 10,000 amps, as defined by ANSI/IEEE C , and can occur up to 432,000 times per hour in extremely active industrial environments. TVSS is recognised as key to solving transient related power quality problems. Small businesses, multinational corporations, healthcare facilities, military bases, educational establishments, process control installations and defence research facilities worldwide have learned that their initial investment in transient voltage surge suppression can be returned quickly by reducing equipment damage, decreasing maintenance costs and improving systems uptime. P R O T E C T A G A I N S T D I S R U P T I O N, D E G R A D A T I O N, D A M A G E, D O W N T I M E 80% 20% INTERNALLY GENERATED TRANSIENTS EXTERNALLY GENERATED TRANSIENTS Up to 80% of transients are generated from internal load switching and the normal operation of equipment, such as the switching on and off of copiers, air-conditioning systems etc. to robotic assembly and welding machines. This can cause: Cumulative damage Premature equipment failure Data losses and system resets PLC control failures Downtime, lost business and opportunities Burnt out printed circuit boards Frequent failure of lamps and fluorescent ballasts Frequent motor rewinds Uninterruptible power supply failure Up to 20% of transients are generated from external sources such as lightning (direct or indirect), power company grid switching and electrical interference from other local industry. This can cause: Catastrophic equipment failure Immediate operation shutdown Long term disruption of business Expensive repair and replacement costs Downtime, lost business and opportunities Burnt out printed circuit boards Frequent failure of lamps and fluorescent ballasts Frequent motor rewinds Uninterruptible power supply failure 4

(Innovative Technology), part of the Delta Group, continues to lead the world-wide transient voltage surge suppression industry with new, innovative protective devices, responsive customer service and the most comprehensive system wide protection plan available. From service entrance to individual load circuits, the MEM System Shield provides integrated suppression for all electrical and electronic equipment and systems. Through strategic placement of TVSS within the power system, co-ordinated protection is put into place to effectively close all paths that damaging transients may take to mission-critical equipment. Advanced field proven circuit designs, like the Threshold Suppression Network (TSN ) and Active Tracking Network (ATN ) address and suppress transients across a wide range of frequencies, amplitudes and phase angles. MEM products offer standard features such as high peak surge current levels, low let-through voltage levels and advanced electrochemical encapsulation technology to provide unsurpassed durability for a lifetime of effective service. Features such as remote alarm capability and IP66 weatherproof enclosures provide application flexibility meeting the widest possible range of requirements. State of the art designs include advanced filtering circuits that remove the disruptive high frequency noise and low level transients responsible for processing errors and system reset requirements. The MEM System Shield and its components continue to evolve, embracing and defining new technology to face the challenges of today and tomorrow s commercial and industrial surge suppression needs. S Y S T E M C O V E R A G E MAIN SWITCHBOARD LOCATIONS The Protector units installed at high exposure service entrance locations provide the first line of defence. Here high transient amplitudes are suppressed to levels that subsequent layers of the MEM System Shield can eliminate. SUB-DISTRIBUTION BOARD LOCATIONS The Protector units installed at these high to medium exposure locations provide the second layer of defence against externally generated transient activity, as well as suppression of the much more prevalent (80%) internally generated transients. FINAL DISTRIBUTION BOARD LOCATIONS Typically sensitive and critical load equipment is fed from these highly important final circuit boards. The Protector units installed at final circuit distribution board locations are designed to address changing transient characteristics via the Active Tracking Network (ATN ). TELECOM AND DATA CIRCUITS Telecom and data circuits are extremely vulnerable to transients, especially at building entry points. Even relatively low energy transients can take down computer, LAN, telephone and other systems. The models of the Protector installed at these locations provide best possible protection for these sensitive and mission critical systems. 5

8 M E M S Y S T E M S H I E L D P R O T E C T I O N ANSI/IEEE C separates a typical installation into three exposure categories, each characterised by differing exposure levels, types of transient wave shapes, voltage/current levels and by transient source. The category locations illustrated here (C, B & A) serve as the basis for a simplified explanation of the MEM System Shield. Category C Locations Category C locations are subject to heavy, externally generated impulse transients resulting from events such as lightning, power company grid switching, power system faults, severe weather and neighbouring facilities. Category B Locations Category B locations are subject to a mixture of externally generated impulse transients and internally generated switching/ring wave transients generated by a broad spectrum of load equipment such as motors, environmental control equipment, manufacturing and office equipment. 6

9 Category A Locations Category A locations are subject to a high level of switching/ring wave transients generated from a wide variety of load equipment, including office equipment and commercial and industrial manufacturing systems. Open arrows represent flow of externally generated transients White P within red area represents the Protector unit locations reducing the strength of transient voltage surges Solid red arrows represent flow of internally generated transients Red "zap" symbols represent location of transient voltage surges. 7

Unfortunately, these systems operate in electrically dirty, transient rich environments. They are often in close proximity to transient generating sources, and in many cases, produce the damaging transients themselves through normal operation. The result is processing errors, system faults, premature component failure leading to increased maintenance requirements, and system downtime. The solution to these problems is the HS-P-SP, HS and HT dedicated load circuit protection models. They cover a full range of AC and DC suppression applications to safeguard dedicated load circuits of all types, and transient susceptibility levels. 40 D A T A / T E L E C O M M U N I C A T I O N S R A N G E Telecom, data transfer, communication circuits, video circuits, current loops and related hardware and software are all extremely vulnerable to transient voltage damage. Transient activity from external sources, and that generated within the commercial and industrial environment through everyday load switching can disrupt operations and cause expensive equipment repairs, loss of stored or transmitted data information, inconvenience, and system downtime. Cables running through metal building framework, entering and leaving the building, running between buildings, or running in close proximity to AC power circuit cables are open invitations for transients to enter and damage valuable mission-critical equipment. The data range of transient voltage surge suppressors, from MEM provide unsurpassed durability, performance and protection for applications including: Co-Ax protectors for CCTV, cable TV, RF & satellite receivers, LAN s, operating ThinNet (10Base2), Token Ring and similar co-axial connected data and signal transfer circuits with BNC, F-Type or Satellite connections. Data, Telecom and Signal Line protectors for ISDN lines, voice grade lines, fax lines and modem lines. Data Line protectors for 1, 2 or 3 pair data, signal and current loop circuits. OEM protectors for 4-20mA current loops, signal lines feeding data transducers, flow meters and similar field sensor requirements. RS232 protectors with DB25 interface. 38

41 T H E B E N E F I T S O F A C T I V E T R A C K I N G NETWORK (ATN ) When selecting a surge suppressor, one of the primary considerations must be the measured limiting voltage of the device. This is defined as the actual amount of peak voltage that the load equipment is exposed to AFTER the surge suppression device operates, and is the critical factor in determining whether damage will occur to the protected equipment. In order to compare the performance of different transient voltage surge suppressors, it is necessary to establish uniform testing criteria, and to test under strictly controlled conditions. Whilst it is not possible to predict the exact nature of transient activity in any given installation, much research has been undertaken to establish typical transient conditions experienced within the electrical environment. The ANSI/IEEE C62 standards define a number of such typical events, together with a uniform set of test criteria in order to enable us to provide such comparisons. Around 80% of the transient activity within our electrical environment is generated by switching on or off all internal loads. Whilst these events will generally be of lower magnitude than many external events, such as lightning or major power system events, they are still likely to cause problems with many of our sensitive electronic systems. Typical problems include premature equipment failure and data related problems such as PLC program difficulties and data communication errors. These lower level switching generated transients are typified by ANSI/IEEE C62.41 as the Category A1 100Khz ring wave, tested at 2000 volts and 67 amps, with the test conducted at 180 on the sine wave. MEM offers two levels of protection: Threshold Suppression Network (TSN), or Active Tracking Network (ATN ). The Active Tracking Network (ATN ) is designed specifically to address the large number of switching generated transient events present in all our electrical distribution systems in order to protect the most sensitive electronic systems upon which we rely in our daily business activities. The selection of which option to use will be determined by the nature and the value of the equipment to be protected. The effect on the system of the different devices is illustrated opposite: Unsuppressed System: If we consider a single cycle of the 50Hz AC sine wave, at 90 the connected load equipment expects to see the peak voltage of the sine wave, at 180, the zero-crossing point, it expects to see 0 volts, and at 270, minus peak voltage. If we now apply the 2000 volt test waveform at 180 onto an unsuppressed system, instead of zero volts at this instant, the load equipment may be exposed to a peak overvoltage of 2000 volts. Obviously this has the potential to damage unprotected equipment. Threshold Suppression Network (TSN): This provides the best suppression of high energy impulse generated transients and suits a wide range of applications. As the name suggests, the suppressor has set thresholds above and below the peaks of the AC sine wave. Any deviation above this results in the device responding to clamp the overvoltage as close as possible to this threshold. With the same applied 2000 volt waveform at 180, the measured limiting voltage in this test may be as high as 600 volts line to neutral. Whilst this offers excellent protection for the majority of our load equipment, and certainly all electromechanical devices, some particularly sensitive and critical load equipment may still be affected. Active Tracking Network (ATN ): In addition to the fixed threshold, this system now also has thresholds which track the AC sine wave, and are able to respond to any transient activity on the system at whatever polarity and phase angle it occurs. Typically this will reduce the same 2000 volt test waveform at 180 to around just 70 volts line to neutral. Clearly this now offers the best available level of protection for the load equipment, and is suitable for protecting the most sensitive electronic equipment such as PLC control systems, data communications equipment, laboratory instrumentation etc. 39
