SPOTLIGHT ON SUCCESS Red River Pedestrian Bridge Lifting System Project Floodwaters along the Red River occasionally rise above the riverbank and damage surrounding infrastructure in Moorhead, Minnesota and Fargo, North Dakota. To prevent recurring damage to a pedestrian bridge between the cities and decrease removal and replacement costs, a 168-foot bridge was commissioned with a self-contained lifting system, including new Magnetek radio remote controls and adjustable frequency drives. In potential flood situations, the original pedestrian bridge between Moorhead and Fargo required removal via portable crane systems that took weeks to coordinate and were expensive to implement. By that time, ice or high water may have already caused permanent damage. Magnetek s IMPULSE VG+ Series 4 Drives, IMPULSE Drive Synchronization Software, and Enrange Flex EX radio remote controls were installed on a new bridge to provide operators with the ability to raise or lower the bridge quickly and eliminate replacement parts and removal costs. transmitter to operate hoists on both sides of the bridge at the same time, ensuring a balanced lift. Flexible and reliable, the Flex EX was able to smoothly and safely control the bridge s lifting function. Magnetek s adjustable frequency drives and radio remote controls improve the cities ability to make quick, responsive decisions based on weather conditions. As soon as reports of poor weather are received, the bridge can be raised without waiting for an outside contractor. Installing the self-contained lifting system not only prevents recurring damage to the bridge, it eliminates the need for seasonal removal and associated costs. Implementation of Magnetek s system allows Moorhead and Fargo to be more responsive to hazardous conditions, saves time and costs when lifting, and decreases the risk of damage to the bridge. Two 40-ton hoists, provided by Superior Crane Corporation, are located on towers at each end of the new bridge and are powered by IMPULSE VG+ drives. IMPULSE VG+ drives are the most reliable, cost-effective drives available today, offering users easy operation and industry-leading safety and performance features to provide unmatched performance for the pedestrian bridge s lifting function. Fiber optic cable trenched beneath the river allows for communication between the two isolated drives. The drive synchronization software precisely monitors speed and positioning of each end of the structure to maintain a balanced lift and can automatically re-synchronize drive motors. Ergonomically designed, lightweight 8-button Flex EX radio remote controls were employed to meet the needs of the new bridge s control system. 2 NEXT GENERATION DataLogger Series 4 The DataLogger Series 4 allows you to easily access the Run, Alarm, and Fault histories, drive parameters, and drive trending data of Magnetek s IMPULSE Series 4, Series 3, and G+ Mini drives. The new drive trending feature makes troubleshooting faults and alarms simple by allowing users to see how drive monitors interact at the same time. Drive trending is PC-compatible and yields graphical data to aid in viewing drive operational statuses. The DataLogger also retains the functionality of a drive keypad so users can configure drives without switching between the two devices to log or modify parameters. This compact, user-friendly device simply plugs into the keypad pocket of IMPULSE G+ and VG+ Series 4 drives or is connected by a cable to Series 3 or G+ Mini drives. All data acquisition is automatic. Data viewing and analysis is available via the LCD scrolling display, or by connecting the DataLogger to your PC and viewing with the IMPULSE Link 5 Viewer software. Magnetek s Dynamic Braking Resistors work in concert with our Dynamic Braking Units to dissipate energy generated from motors controlled by IMPULSE variable frequency drives during dynamic lowering or decelerating. Anti-Shock Technology Magnetek s IMPULSE VG+ Series 4 crane controls are now equipped with state-of-the-art Anti-Shock technology, which automatically stabilizes loads by detecting and minimizing rapid increases in motor torque, thus reducing the potential for crane damage caused by operator induced load shock. The proactive approach of using Anti-Shock technology not only protects the crane and building from excessive stress conditions, thereby reducing maintenance costs, it also increases operator safety by reducing the risk for mechanical failure. 4 Software Options OFFER IMPROVED OPERATIONS Incorporating state-of-the-art wireless communication technology, Magnetek s radio remote controls can be customized with a variety of software options for precise control and improved operation of almost any material handling application. Drop Detection Drop Detection identifies an accidental drop of a transmitter. All operations automatically cease and the transmitter shuts off in the event of a drop to prevent unintended equipment motion and enhance system safety. Tilt Detection Tilt Detection recognizes an angle change in transmitter units. This feature helps prevent unintended movement when the transmitter is not functioning at the proper angle. Weight Scale Feedback Weight Scale Feedback allows weight scale equipment to relay information through the receiver. Requiring a transmitter with a screen to display the communicated feedback, Weight Scale Feedback easily delivers weight information to users. Push to Operate (PTO) Push to Operate can be programmed in two different modes: one that requires pressing an additional pushbutton to operate machine functions, the other with a set time limit for transmitter and alarm alert. PTO increases user safety by preventing accidental operations and ensures no machine functions occur unless an operator is actively engaged with the transmitter. Custom Menu System The Custom Menu System allows customers to select specific menu options. You choose from a number of different menus, including PTO, timeout setting, and number of speeds per lever, and Magnetek configures the easy-to-use system menus. Radio Control Programmer (RCP) The Radio Control Programmer (RCP) makes radio remote controls even easier to use. RCP allows programming of system settings from your Windows PC. Vigilance Circuit Vigilance Circuit, while similar to PTO, is typically used for specific implementation, such as providing confirmation to a control system that a latched function is a valid requirement. The Vigilance Circuit protects operators from neglecting an important function by requiring a reactivation every seconds. Infrared Pairing Infrared (IR) Pairing is a simple matching method that pairs a Magnetek transmitter and receiver through an IR interface in order to control that specific receiver. This feature allows transmitters and receivers to exchange information required for them to communicate RF without the need for a menu system or RCP.
