1 SASTracer Protocol Analyzer Configurations: This document outlines the supported test configurations for monitoring SAS and SATA physical links using the LeCroy SASTracer protocol analyzer platform. SASTracer 1 or 2 Port SAS Configurations a. SASTracer configured for single monitor traffic passing between SAS Initiator and SAS Device. This setup reflects early development SAS HDD prototypes that utilize SATA-I plug connectors only on the HDD. Standard SATA style internal receptacle connectors and cables may also be used to attach SAS initiator directly to analyzer. b. SASTracer configured for two port operation with cable attachment to monitor between dual ported connectors on a SAS HDD and two separate ports on a SAS initiator. This setup reflects future availability of SAS dual ported HDD connectors (figure 43; SAS_r05). These will be standard on production SAS HDDs. This configuration is supported with internal dual-ported cable connector (w/integrated power) fanned out to 2-legged SATA style internal cable receptacles. c. SASTracer configured for dual monitor traffic passing through a SAS Expander. This assumes SATA plug connectors only on the Initiator, and Expander. SAS HDD may use single or dual ported connector (a or b). Note: monitoring between SAS HDD directly attached to a SAS active backplane may require special backplane cable available from LeCroy. 2 d. SASTracer configured for dual monitor traffic between two SAS HDD and two ports on a single SAS initiator. This assumes SATA plug connectors only on the Initiator. SAS HDD may use single or dual ported connector (a or b). e. SASTracer configured for dual monitor a two-wide SAS link between a SAS initiator and End Device using a pair of special cables with SATA style internal (narrow) connectors to SAS 4-wide connector (SFF-8470). Note: 4-wide Octopus cable is utilized where 2 extra links are no connect SASTracer 4 Port Configurations f. SASTracer configured for 4 port operation with test setup to monitor a 4- wide SAS link between a SAS initiator and End Device using a pair of special octopus cables. These cables include four (4) SATA style internal (narrow) initiator receptacle connectors to a single SAS 4-wide external Infiniband style connector (SFF-8470). This same configuration can also be supported using SAS 4-wide internal connector (SFF-8484). LeCroy 2 of 5 6/1/05- SAS-configurations

3 g. Users can cascade up to 4 SAS/SATA analyzers to capture traffic on both sides of a 4-wide SAS expander. The BNC connectors on the CATC analyzers are used to synchronize traffic to a single clock reference across multiple chassis. Cascading of standalone analyzers allows capture of "time-synchronized" display of up to 16 links of SAS and SATA traffic. Each of CATC s 4 lane SAS Analyzers include the SAS External Octopus cables (1 initiator & 1 target side [crossover] cable) for probing the configuration shown to the right. h. SASTracer configured for 4 port operation with test setup to monitor 4 individual SAS links. This assumes SATA plug connectors only on the Initiator. SAS HDD uses dual ported connector (b) split out to SATA style cable. SASTracer 4 Port External Connector Configurations i. When using new External Connector Module (SS004MAA) with standard 4X External InfiniBand style cables, there is no need to use cross-over cable. Both cables above are straight. 4 j. SASTracer configured external SAS 4 port connectors with test setup to monitor a 4-lane SAS link between a SAS initiator and targets using a pair of special octopus cables. When using new External Connector Module (SS004MAA) to tap between devices that use Internal SATA style connector with SAS Octopus cables, the initiator must be a cross-over cable. SATracer 3G ( SATA) Configurations k. SASTracer configured for single port operation with test setup to monitor traffic between SATA 1.5/3Gbps Host and SATA 1.5/3Gbps Device. This assumes SATA plug connectors only on the Initiator and SATA HDD. l. SASTracer configured for dual port operation with test setup to monitor traffic passing through a SATA port multiplier. This assumes SATA plug connectors only on the Host, Device and SATA port multiplier device. LeCroy 4 of 5 6/1/05- SAS-configurations

5 m. SATracer configured for 4 port operation with test setup to monitor traffic between four (4) SATA 1.5/3Gbps Host ports and four (4) SATA 1.5/3Gbps Devices. This assumes SATA plug connectors only on the SATA Host and Devices.
